I enjoy seeing the drop off from the interstate .We live in Northeast Ga but have 2.5 acres in Fancy Gap.(For Sale Cheap) ,,we werer going to move to Mayberry but had to change our minds
It is possible to recoup the gas you burnt the way up, by keeping in in Neutral onall the way down. Great vid! Being from Wytheville, VA and living in FL. I can drive that road with my eyes close, and I think I may have a time or two. BTW I would NOT recommend doing that.! Just look southeast and enjoy the view! LOVE IT!
@TKworldwide sorry for the delayed response. Yes, a beautiful route to drive. Living in Florida is just that, warm weather and pretty much the same. Not at all like the change of season places and the mountains. Thanks
I77 isn't Fancy Gap mountain. US52 is Fancy Gap mountain. You want a climb, get your ass up that in a proper sports car or sportbike, Northbound, from the Cana side.
Just glanced at the comments before posting, KLDRNL1 beat me to it. Thumbs up-ing your comment shortly B-D
My mother and I drove a fully loaded 17 foot Uhaul truck up that mountain. We were also towing a 1998 Ford Escort behind us on a dolly trailor. We only got up to 30mph!
@vbdenny I used to work for Uhaul, and rented a newer 2008 26 foot truck, loaded 8100 lbs according to scales, and then attached the biggest car trailer, and loaded a 3/4 ton lifted chevy pickup on it. Drove from NC to WI. Including sandstone mountain. That truck had alot of balls for a lil chevy gas engine. Was rolling 70-75 most of the way. Governs at 75-76, can get scary on downhills when you cant pull out of a sway. Knowing when to downshift makes life vs death in a gas truck on sandstone
This isn't Fancy gap mountain this is 77 try rolling up or down the actual mountain coming from Mt.Airy NC bet you can't hold the video camera while driving even better try it in the Fog and see what happens
@KLDRNL1 Damn, now I'll have to try that the next time I am in the area. I do have something to hold the camera if need be and I have vision like a hawk so fog doesn't bother me although it might degrade the video. Thanks, I always appreciate knowing more.
Just what everyone needs on I-77: a knob speeding, with more effort and concentration put into video recording than driving - with his daughter in the vehicle. But maybe he has a point: the guy who has the nerve to drive the fastest is the REAL man. Whoowahhh!
We've driven this route more times than I can count - and we live in Maine. We bought some land in Fancy Gap last year, about 4 miles from I-77. If I remember right, you get to it from the first exit off 77 after going north through the gap. I have a video of it on my site.
dont try climing the mountain with overdive on and cruise control on. it happened to me and i wound up with super hot atf, the tach jumped tp 4500 and she quit pulling. after my car colled down i was able to continue.
My truck has a 5 speed stick and it doesn't even have cruise. I am more of a pedaler than a cruiser anyway. Pretty steep hill, I had to floor it in 4th to maintain speed.
I spent a good portion of my youth in Fancy Gap VA. My grandmother and other relatives all live in Fancy Gap. I live in AK now, but love going back when I can.

You were probably lucky to get to 30 in a UHaul. Some of them I've rented would only go 50 on the flats. That really is a steep, long hill.

Speeding? at 75?
glad you enjoyed the video

I know that climb very well.
8 miles long, steep and usually I can expect a few downshifts.
With a heavy load (75-80000lbs gross weight), my truck will be doing 40mph at the top after starting the climb at 70 with a drop of 4 gears.
And it can be tricky to go down that hill too with a heavy truck.

What kind of truck were you driving? Why turn off the a/c?
HumoPiruli 3 years ago
A Nissan with a 4 cylinder without much horsepower. The A/C drains off power, enough on hills to cause a power loss.

Gorgeous scenery off the interstate. Scenery improves when you travel southbound on I-77, especially when you start from Cleveland.
