The duality of man and nature. It is difficult to understand because even though we are physically a part of nature, our society teaches us that we exist apart from it. Instead of getting food from the forest, we get it at a supermarket. Our society teaches us that money = food/shelter/survival, when the truth is that our survival is dependent on nature/plants/air/earth/sun. The disconnect from nature is in the hive mind of civilization. This is why we are now facing global enviro-destruction.

Animals are in sink with nature, a good example of that was the tsunami a couple years ago where over 200 000 people died and not one reported case of an animal dieing(because they have the sense). Humanity is disconnected and also has been given greater power(the frontal lobe)...and with greater power comes great responsibility. Unfortunately we still live in the King & Queen mentality. This economy crisis could be solved in one day.

The ethereal "whole" is simply the orchestra of our lives interconnecting and reacting. I disagree. Science has never made a move to prove that free will does, or does not, exist. Due, most probably, to the fact that free will obviously does exist. We are always- ALWAYS- free to make any choice we desire, even if that choice is impossible (generally regarded as insanity).

Still, it's not entirely correct, Militaristic. Swans get together as life partners- this actually creates less spawn, not more. Nature may be selfish when it comes to survival, but in certain species, what could be called love is found. We are not the only of our kind, just the easiest to notice.

In a recent example, what about the dog that tried to help its friend off the highway? That had absolutely nothing to do with survival.

@Militaristic The difference between human and animal is that animals only take what is necessary and instinctively allow it nature to restore. Man however takes more than what is necessary taking from future generations. Whilst nature follows this law with no freedom of choice at all, we have to abide by that law of giving, only taking what is necessary and giving rest to general needs of society, by our own freedom of choice. Or else things will heat up and turn sour.

He's perpetuating a nice but damaging idea that "nature" exhibits only these wonderful qualities, and that man has fallen from its grace. "Nature" is all sorts of crazy, but only from a human point of view, because we're the only species even able to make value judgments in this way. Self-reflective brain/mind = bigger problems, more responsibility, greater freedom = guilt and the desire to repair harm. We are "natural" in all senses, its just that we are nature uniquely self-aware.

It's be funnier and more accurate to show that nature is about the survival of the fittest, the stronger eating the weaker, the fact that life depends on death to exist, that nature was born in a huge explosion, that earth is covered with natural disasters, disease, and the occasional planetwide extinction from a cometary or ateroid impact. Nature is violent, murderous, dripping with diseases that we must conquer. Nature is a Mother all right!
