@academysounds Ultimately a distributed generation system is probably better (if somewhat less efficient in basic metrics) but until all consumers can afford to invest in generating their own energy we're going to have to have some hybrid centralized system.
If you wanna go super-meta, the grid serves many purposes which are taken for granted, even for off-the-grid advocates. Very few are fully independent and sustainable, and they live like Amish or less.
