Adobe After Effects is mainly as the name suggests for Effects, Sony might be better in editing then After Effects but that's why Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 exists. Adobe Premiere > Sony Vegas because it has much more functionality.

@dragonlord0078 render is changing the project into an actual video for upload, sending or for other people viewing it without the need of the program. Save as is saving the project so you can only view the video in the program you made it in. Well that's what it is for Sony Vegas :D or something like that -_-
