I am an amateur woodworker with limited skills and very limited tools, but I enjoy making things well. I need pointers on building some solid joints so I searched Youtube for "finger joint" and found countless videos on making them with jigs, table saws, routers and other obnoxiously noisy power tools I don't own.
Yours was one of only 4 that shows how to make finger joints with hand tools.
It was a pleaseure to watch you work with quiet and patient skill and precision.
when i do finger joints (im only 15, so correct me if this is a mistake) i usually just cut down either side of it, then chisel out the middle, this would change depending on the side, but i find it really easy and i seem to get a better finish
You are certainly not wrong, particularly if you are successful. There is no single correct method. I made this clip for a Year 10 class who were working in MDF and chiseling would have been a reasonable option, however I wanted to broaden their skills so included the coping saw option. I prefer to saw out the waste as chiseling will dent and distort the surface fibres of the wood, especially softwood. In any case, for quality work , I would prefer to use one of the dovetail joints.
I think the red suit and white cuffs reveal it all. ITS SANTA!!!!

I made this for my year 10 group and only posted it on you-tube when a colleague bet me I wouldn't be able to do it.....
I always wanted to do more demo's like this. Perhaps I will now.
I really appreciate your kind comments. Thank you.
