Pretty much just to immitate it , put your arm straight and it's the same as your knees. just keep your legs straight, hence locking the knee joint. Not sure why, maybe cuts blood flow?

LOL I have seen people in the military wobbling, barely able to stand up, and finally passing out on the floor. You lock your knees long enough, you will pass out. This happens when people remain standing in the same rigid position for long periods of time.
