  • thanks to symphony for all your work

  • an unbelievably beautiful song, but 1:25 to 1:50 is just .... i don't know .... i can't find the right words ... it's such a sublime melody it's beyond melody. if there was a heaven, some of it would be just this 25 seconds played continuously. i can't imagine getting tired of it.

  • The real question is: who *hasn't* shed buckets every single time they hear this song?? Has a more emotionally heart-wrenching track EVER been written by ANYONE? Seriously...?!!

  • @mtopper66 I haven't shed buckets, though I don't think its because of Kate. I'm just a robot.

  • A few tears rather.

  • Yeah I've shed a few times listening to that bit about the little brown jug.... but on a geeky note, if you want your upload to fill the whole screen export it as NTSC or 29 frames per sec (even if it is PAL) from your app. or from your media convertor. Youtube is American.

  • Not a dry eye left after this song.

  • This song kills me. Heartbreaking and beautiful

  • A very nice tribute from Kate to her late mother.... Haunting song if ever there was one....

  • stunner.

  • The combination of vocal, lyrical imagery and melodic composition is so beautiful and I'm glad she released it from her private thoughts ..this is what makes her so unique and such a composite artist

  • Your work is awesome. As always

  • Stunning track, and a beautiful vocal by kate.If you dont get a lump in your throat listening to this..then your already in the sweet hereafter!

  • This song made me weep the first and virtually every time I've heard it since. It's the evocation of a memory of a lost one which, as happens, arrive from totally out of the blue. It made me weep even when my own mother was alive 'cos I knew one day I'd have to face her departing, and now, about 6 years after it was released, that time has arrived. And it's still as powerful as it ever was.

  • beautiful. xx

  • Michael Wood is my Dad!

  • I have had Aeriel since the day it was released. But only as I listen to this beautiful song now have I fallen in love with it. Don't you find that many of her best songs are growers? This lady can do no wrong.

  • this is my fave of her modern songs

  • this is one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard.

  • as always you

    present kate the best way

  • as always you are the best Kate presenter

    I appreciate your work

  • This is for you, Shumaila.

  • Bertie is so cute :) He looks like his mom (his mouth, mostly...)

  • Love all your videos, thanks for sharing them with me :)

  • @skycladwow You're welcome!

  • aww one of my favourites.

  • she should make a duet with morten harket and yet... it would be too painful to listen to gods crying

  • The reference to planes crashing down refers to shattered dreams and lives, not WW11 Bombers. It's metaphorical rather than in the literal sense.

  • @pigskin100 in your opinion it is.

  • @pigskin100 Thanks. Nice commentary on this lovely song by Kate. Amazing still after all these years.

  • this song is typically for kate.

it clearly shows her golden heart and soul!!

    what a woman!! i love her !!!

she is send like an angel in our dirty world from godfather himself!!1

many greetings from an engineer from berlin to ALL fans

  • yes i think the town is on the flightpath of returning bombers in ww2. i think some of it is an ode to ppl lost at sea, and lieing with the coral. "put your hand over the side of the boat. what do you feel" their souls?

  • I think that there is also a war connection - from "... and the planes came crashing down, and many a pilot drowned..". Anybody have any thoughts on that?

  • dear symphony

thank you for the great melding of image and song.

your work is to be commended. you enhance Kate;and

help her songs to get to us

  • Without a doubt, one of the most moving songs ever written.

  • it's worth waiting for years when she can turn up with something as classic as this track. first heard the album when in a half slumber in a gin induced state on a boat on the river cam & this one was the one track that stayed with me. unfortunately the last track i heard when taking my 16 year old cairn terrier to be put down so a truly heartbreaking song but beautiful nevertheless.

  • I love your stuff on the whole, particularly Architect's Dream, but I think this is one that's better off left in your head - mainly because of the dense metaphorical content, I guess. There's another reason as well: this is about grief through a personal loss and memory best left well alone I think. Nothing to do with the qaulity o your production -superb.

  • I have never made a video for "An Architect's Dream". I think you are confusing with someone else.

And as I said, I had a request for this song. I had also thought about doing it myself. And I worked very hard on this video. In general I think that "Aerial" is the hardest one to make videos for of all of Kate's albums.

  • I agree with pigskin, this song is way too personal to be making a video to, unless it's Kate making the video. I appreciate you being such a big fan, though.

  • I must say that there's such multi-layered imagery in this song that the visuals are a distraction - no disrespect to whomever put them together though.

  • It was me who put them together. I got a request for this song and I thought this was a nice opportunity to try something new and be a little more experimental. So I thought I'd make a combination of photos and video clips. The video was also meant as a celebration of Kate's 50th birthday.

  • The harmonics fade away like a bereavement. We have to fully experience the pain and joy of being alive or we stay trapped by the net and in the half-light of existence. The sails are at the window.

  • Pigskin, I am so glad there are others besides me so moved by this song. Your interpretation of the net and half-light is right-on, thanks for sharing! Good stuff!

  • ..beyond words..

'put your hand over the side of the boat.. what do you feel?'

  • Water, possibly, unless the boat is in dry dock..

  • This is such a sad and beautiful song. I've never heard anything like it - it's like Philip Pullman's Subtle Knife, it somehow seems to open up another world in a strange way. I feel a bit embarrassed about this but I just cry buckets everytime I listen. I think I'll try something a bit more upbeat now.

  • @pigskin100 Don't be embarrassed. I keep coming back to this song to try and understand more (I am afraid to do too much research - I am sure there is a full explanation out there, but for now I prefer my current views on it) - and I have to listen to it alone, because I too weep buckets, and I am not quite sure why. That's why it's a piece of art. Not that it matters, but I am a 57 year old male with a beard, job and family, most of which works for me. Still need Kate, though.

  • ugh.. my pop just died. he was 62.. thanks kate. i needed the catharsis.

  • ouch....so real it hurts.

  • So beautiful, so melancholic...

  • It drains me of all visible signs of vigour yet reinvigorates every cell.

  • the best Kate's song.....When she sings "I can hear her singing", her voice is absolutely touching and celestial. The piano score is amazing too, like Debussy in 21st century.

    Thanks for sharing this video!!

  • YES! Debussy! That's it! I was trying to figure that out...and now, I'm recalling "La Cathédrale engloutie" thanks to Kate's imagery.

Perhaps you've passed a key regarding some of the inspiration for this song...

  • i remember there was a write up in the paper bout this song

and how amazing it was with really beautiful lyrics

    that reporter was right

tis one of the most beautiful songs

    accompaned with a beautiful video

  • This song is so beautiful......and comforting......may Kate and her family be comforted during this time of loss.....

    Thanks Symphony for this...

  • What loss?

  • The song is about the loss of her mother. Kate's mother died in 1992.

  • Thanks

  • her father passed

  • This time of loss? It's been years since Kate's mom passed away.

  • Hi mrscry...I wrote my comment about a year ago when Kate's father passed away...upon listening to this song, I was moved to write condolences at the time...it's not necessary to pick apart a kind message is it? thanks...

  • My bad. I wasn't picking, I was just curious.

  • ..no problem.....and i agree, this song is an incredibly beautiful and moving song...

  • Thanks Symphony for completeing my request. Its absolutly wonderful- I am surprised how much this song pervades my thoughts as much as her older work. I love this song and your video compliments it really well- it was worth the wait!

  • You're welcome! I worked really hard on this video. This video is also my present to Kate for her birthday.

  • Happy Birthday Cathy fine video my fave song of Aerial is How To Be Invisible but this is superb Thanks SOF.

  • PS-Another remarkable and and truly beautiful

video, that goes hand in hand with this ace-

    song!!Well-done my friend!!

  • Thank you! I wanted to try something new with this video.

  • This is my favorite song on "Aerial"!!!

A truly moving and beautiful song!!

You can clearly hear the emotions in Kates-

voice, more than I've ever heard before.

Always brings a tear to my eyes!!*****!!

For me a ground breaking song by this icon!!

  • This is my favorite song of all time, hands down, including all classical. And i'd like to know what the connection is between these sea images and her mom... half the song is clearly about mom memories, but then all this "more grand" stuff that takes place on the sea?

  • I think it's how the most unconnected things can invoke a memory from nowhere. I imagine to myself that it's like she's on holiday maybe, in a boat, a hand trailing through the water, looking at the (dead?) coral, and all of a sudden she remembers her mother. Like she says: "Put your hand over the side of the boat, and what do you feel?"

  • Why does she have to be on holiday?

    and in a boat?

What if she was supposed to be at work but realized she had more important things to do with her time and during this time she experienced the same kind of emotion she put in song for us to relate to.
