Many of the great African kingdoms did not have written languages and much information has been lost. Many of the great African written languages have yet to be deciphered (Nubia- for example) and it is an enormous continent - we would have to narrow the focus - where should more focus be centered?

@bluetoga123 That is a large question indeed. Like any complex historical issue, there are many factors to consider. European colonialism certainly led to racism and that has played a factor. Many of the great African kingdoms did not have written languages and much information has been lost. Many of the great African written languages have yet to be deciphered (Nubia- for example) and it is an enormous continent - we would have to narrow the focus - where should more focus be centered?

i would consider hannibal far greater though considering he did so much damage with so little compared to romes insanly large manpower and a gov't that actually backed its leader really well....

how is that? the barkas left carthage and created new carthage, not to mention the massive wealth the barkas accumlated from the silver mines of spain. either way yeah hannibal did do some very impressive stuff..but look at who he was fighting..Consuls..with no miltary experience..look what actually happened when he went against a roman with some kind of miltary compatince...he lost and his country was wipped off the face of the planet what 60 years later?

Actually all that Silver was controlled by the Cartheginian government not the Barca's. That silver was not Hannibal's nor any of the Barca's. Hannibal used his own Wealth to fund the expedition to Italy. The consuls he fought did have experience both Longus and Scipio the Elder had abundance of experience, so did Paullus. Marcellus was one of Rome's greatest generals, infact he was there best at that point in there history, until Scipio Africanus came to the fore. Hannibal was one of a kind!

this video is pretty fucked up I must say...as I saw at the biginning the cut with Rome with the Coliseum on I said: crap! The coliseum was built some 290 years later then the Punic wars!! omg :(((
so far the only plausable docu about Hannibal Barca is the one BBC did. If you read all the books about the secind Punic War (the greatest conflict ever!) you will realize that Scipio Africanus was utterly the greatest commander ever walked on this planet. ok is hard to compare but he was immense

You see the same black nationalism applied to the Pharaohs of Egypt. True, there were "black" Pharaohs from a period of Nubian rule in Egypt in a later period. Also I already knew all of that info. But, what I wonder is how tyre fell back so far down after being so powerful. And Carthage coming so close in the first punic war. But they ended up losing their great navy. I do not think relying so much on mercenaries was a great idea. Also his plan in Southern Italy was pretty risky. He had lost around 1/3 of his army because of the alps. Deserters and death. But all we get for sources is from the romans and roman allies, so that is pretty sad.

Ah, ok. Well that clears that up. I got a new book from livy about the punic war. I got it recntly. Seems interesting. But I do not like Livy's interpretations of certain events and how he describes the character of certain people.

Tyre was powerfull for a short period because other powers, like the hittes, assyrians, egyptians, babylonians, persians and later on macedonians, captured it. By contrast, Carthage had no very powerfull neighbours for 500 years, until Rome, so it could last longer as an independent city compared to it's mother city Tyre.
