Are u stupid its not the belmont stakes its the kentucky derby and its 1-1/4 miles, plus he barely hit supersaver, he hit rachel alexandra more and shes a filly
No offense to all you race-lovers out there, but seriously? That jockey could have honestly laid off on the stick. That horse is running its heart out: hitting it over and over again isn't going to necessarily make it go faster after a mile and a half.
Well Smartass, this is a 10 furlong race, not a 12 furlong. That is a specifically designed whip to make a sharp sound instead of a hit. So generally Super Saver didn't getr affected by anything at all besides the sound.
@Mewlie I agree he does go a little overboard on the whip but in a Kentucky derby the whip is all you got if it was a normal race I would make a stewards inquire
@gotch09 He's on a Derby win binge unequalled in the history of the race, that's all. Borel had nothing to do with Super Saver losing the Preakness. He didn't have the horse today.
If Lookin at Lucky wasnt shuffled in the begining of the race he would have won. If Sydney's Candy did not tire out he could have won. But things happen and I give congrats to Calvin Borel for winning.
Ice Box had to be pulled up twice down the stretch to avoid horses in front of him, and still came flying. What if he had clear going down the stretch?
I don't see a triple crown but a great horse none the less. Is it possible for eskendereya to come back for the preakness or belmont? Either way Ice Box was my pick and he really is a spectacular closer. Just not enough to catch super saver on this day
That is not entirely true in 1998 Victory Gallop closed on Real Quiet. I do agree that the horse needs to have an even pace. Most important the horse needs stamina for a mile and half
Haha! Borel's ride is almost completely identical to last year's ride aboard Mine That Bird, the only difference being the length of victory at the wire. Oh I love this guy!
IMO ... All these horses are great horses ... or else they wouldn't have earned their spot in this race. Ice Box was amazing for his late ralley, Conveyance and Sidney were blazing fast to set the pace, Lookin' at Lucky had a horrible trip but still managed 6th and Super Saver is adapting to a new racing style and won!
People who think Ice Box would have won with more ground don't know racing. Simple. Super Saver was never going to lose that race. It even took until mid of the turn on the gallop for him to catch him, nice try though. Too many "what ifs" people, all that matters is what IS. Stately Victor is my horse but I'm not making excuses.
Ice Box will be overbet next out because he had a brutal trip and was another "unlucky loser" of the race. People pay attention to that more than the actual winner. The wise-guy pick in Belmont, and although I respect Zito winning it twice now, I don't trust Lezcano all that much. Don't single Ice Box in the Belmont just yet.
I am not going to put much stock in the final time of 2:04.4/5. If you remember Smarty Jones ran the 2004 Derby in 2:04 on about the same kind of track and look how well Smarty turned out. Not comparing the 2 horses could be a concidence, but i think it was just a really slow track. It didn't seem sloppy like last year. Seemed tacky to me and that is the reason for the time. IMO
@Rodney81818 Despite the wet track in this race, the speed fractions were actually very fast...the first 1/4 mile was 22.63 seconds, the first 1/2 mile in 46.00 seconds. These are very fast fractions, so you can't say this was a "slow track". My theory is that a wet track actually gives a horse more "spring" , and therefore more speed. When the flat hoof of a horse smacks a wet dirt surface, the water-dirt mixture compresses under the hoof and "springs" a horse forward.
@siroptimistic I was just giving Super Saver some credit. They are people sayin he isn't that good of a horse because of the final time and I was just making a point that Smarty Jones ran his derby in about the same time and also the fractions in that race were 1/4 in 22 4/5 and 1/2 in 46 3/5. So the 04 Derby is the best comparable derby to this one but i agree with your point.
If the Preakness and Belmont came up sloppy, Super Saver's chances for a Triple Crown improves. Still undefeated on a wet surface. If both races come up fast, one of the Ky Derby also-rans or new shooters can defeat him in the other two legs.
Happy for Calvin Borel again. I knew when Super Saver ran inside of Noble's Promise, he was the obvious winner and I only paid attention to the horses hitting the tri. If Borel is a god in Churchill Downs, he is ordinary outside of it. I give Super Saver 50/50 to win the Preakness. Watch all this TC hoopla build up and then try to beat him in NY in "The Test of Champions" distance. This is ripe for another TC upset like what happened in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2008.
I made some cash off this race, but I still don't see a Triple Crown winner in him. He is no better than Funny Cide. He is no mortal lock in Pimlico. He is a byproduct of circumstance. Best jock, best trip, great post, sloppy track, defections, favs getting a bad post draw, etc. The stars aligned for Super Saver. Bet him in the Preakness because it is formful and he'll probably win for fun like Charismatic, but beat him in Belmont. TC spoiler year and Belmont will be ripe for a longshot.
if ice box runs in the belmont i dont see any way if that horse is ready that anyone beats him. he had to check up in full stride then regained his momentum and still placed which is amazing in a grade 1 race. i seriously doubt again that we will have a triple crown winner.also if looking at lucky ever gets a half decent trip where gomez doesnt pull him up i think he will show his class too.
Interesting to compare this win by Super Saver to last year's win by Mine That Bird. The winning time for Super Saver was 2:04.45, but MTB's winning time was a full two seconds faster at 2:02.60. Even more remarkable was that MTB entered the final turn in last position. This means MTB's run during the second half of the race must be some kind of a speed record (or close to it) for the Kentucky Derby.
It's so nice to finally win the Kentucky Derby!!! We got a taste with Bluegrass Cat when he was second to Barbaro. This is a dream come true for us at WinStar Farm.
Cuando colocan la vista de planta en la ultima curva Ice Box se estaba ganado a 2 y no pudo conseguir el pase, solo en los 150 Mts finales y para llegar segundo... No creo que Super Saver se Triplecorone...
Wonder if there will be a bidding war for Calvin Borel in advance of the 2011 Derby, clearly he's the best of this generation of Derby riders, with the exception of Kent Desormeaux who's also won 3 Derbies.
Calvin Borel in the last 4 Derby's has went 1st on Street Sense in 2007, 3rd of Denis of Cork in 2008, 1st on Mine That Bird in 2009, and 1st of Super Saver in 2010. If i had a horse in the derby i would have Calvin aboard. On another note in 2008 if you watch closely he makes the same run from the back that he made on Mine That Bird with Denis of Cork, i mean almost exactly that same trip. Just against better compatition in that Derby with Big Brown and Eight Belles.
@Rodney81818 He just had better compatition in 2008. He was the only horse to gain anything on Big Brown in 2008. The only reason he was gaining anything that day was Calvin. So give it up for Calvin Borel.
Great win by Super Saver, Calvin Borel, and, I'm glad Tood Pletcher has finally gotten the monkey off of his back. Congratulations all around!!! Now, on to Preakness. Calvin predicted that Super Saver will win the Triple Crown. While I'd love to see a Triple Crown Winner, I don't see it happening this year. Lookin at Lucky is my Preakness horse. I still think he was the best horse. He should get a better trip here in The Preakness is where the cream usually rises to the top.
Lookin at Lucky just can't catch a break. Even so, he made up a lot of ground. A lot of horses might have thrown it in after the disastrous first quarter. He had to come from a lot further back than he likes with his grinder style. Maybe next time.
I HATE RAINY DERBIES. The day that we finally have a sunny day at churchill downs come first saturday in may from here on out horses will run to there true abilites. Calvin i should have listened to myself this morning when i said youll probably win this thing again cause your hore relished the GOOO. But don't over do it just yet and think you will win all 3 right now. When you know you had an advantage. UNLESS IT RAINS in pimlico and new york? What a crapppy derby
Ice Box had horrible stretch run where jockey couldn't find opening until late. Jockey kept looking for opening coz he knew he had plenty of horse left. With a smarter run, Ice Box wins Preakness and Belmont. As for Super Saver? Easy ride where everything went right. Congratulations.
@dustywhipp5 Deep closers like Ice Box traditionally do not do well in the Belmont for some reason. It's usually won by horses with good tactical speed.
Ice Box absolutely FLYING at the end.... On a good track, this horse would have run down Super Saver -- WATCH OUT for Ice Box at Belmont with that LOOOOONG straightaway and the mile and a half!!!!!
Thanks for posting this race. I missed it because of my own stupidity. However, I think Super Saver will have a tougher road in the Preakness two weeks from now. Because, there could be somebody like Rachael Alexandra who can upset him big time.
