Sony pulled the online PS2 plug not that long ago aparently. I remember playing Toca 3 in late 2007. Sad really because I still think there's a community for it even today.

@R33Racer Same for me. Neversoft pulled the plug on all the Tony Hawk branded games for the PS2 to work on other fads like DJ Hero 2 and Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock on July 26 2007. Since then there was a bot server named Biohacker (in jail since 2005 for 10 year sentence for hacking Neversoft during the Gun release) and Snipes ran by a US Marine affected by "Don't ask, don't tell" and PC versions by modder/hacker CHC. Since 2007, it came back up in 2008 then 2009 it died out for good. RIP DNAS

If I just want to use the hard drive option, do I need the start up disc? Also, is there an alternative to the start up disc, like can you use certain Network Enabled games?

@thatguyontheright1 most online enabled games like the socom games, area 51 and star wars battlefront 2 have a startup disk built in the game. so if you have a game with the startup built in 'web search a list to see which ones do' all you'll need to is get the adapter, connect to your router via eithernet cable and your set.

You dont need this PS2 Network adapter if you are already on the network and have a network box hooked to your computer and router etc once you turn your PS2 on it will let you set up the ps2 and look for your network connection like the nintendo wii correct ?

some people are wondering why you would want this now days well it's a easy way to play pirated games using your memory card soft mod ... the usb external hard drives are slow to run on the ps2 because there 1.0 not 2.0 but this will let you play at full speed and no lagging on videos and yes you could just burn to disk but that takes longer and it's easier to have 200+ games on a hard drive and you can network from your pc to just drag and drop games from your computer or play from pc hd

Even though games has came and gone, dial up PS2 games are quite useless nowadays because they all support broadband anyways. there are some game that went under and an error saying beta may or may not come up. But a lot of others has home servers that runs the actual Game Spy Arcade program for the replacement for other servers that were closed, and I have a code to one server.
