Ok liquid solder is what's used to connect the fpc connector to the board? Not regular solder then? See I'm going to attempt a replacement fpc connector for lcd on an I pod touch 4 g and wasn't sure how they did it but now I believe its with the liquid solder.can you assist in any tips that might be usefull.?
with reagrds to magnification glass I have got a cheap 3x one which barely makes any difference looking through it... What is the best magnification for such a delicate task?
In fact tomorrow I'm will be going to look for a good stereozoom microscope hopefully it ll be much easier
And does the soldering iron suck being 1.2mm tip? And what do you prefer for this task conical or chisel tip?
@unitedforhelp My solder past has flux in it, if yours is a bit dry them flux it up a bit. You do not need a lot of solder. If you still have solder on the pads then that will aid the process
As for solder tips I use either a needle tip or narrow flat tip. I get less bridging with a needle tip.
I use a Weller variable heat solder station....WMD3 set at 380c
Forgot to mention that the dispensing tip of the solder paste is 0.83mm from the syringe. Although I noticed that the solder paste used in your video is more acqueous than mine, mine is more solid grey formula
But I hardly think that the solder paste is the problem as it is from Kester which offers very good products
First of all many thanks for your video it has thought me a lot of things.
However I have some questions regarding the soldering of the new connector...
When I try to solder the new connector the solder paste sometimes it ends up going on inside the conenctor resulting in melting the plastic body of the connector and when I try to amend the solder back it starts to bridge with the adjacent connections.
Could you please advise how bridging could be removed?
@unitedforhelp what size tip are you using and what heat? do not use too much liquid solder. If you get a bridge try cleaning your tip, add some gel flux to the bridged area and drag the tip away from the joints.
@tennyson0228 Don't see a problem with a 50 watt iron.......is it variable temp?
A 50 watt iron will recover its heat faster than a 15 watt....so when you apply a 15 watt iron to the work the temperature will drop, a 50 watt iron will recover faster ( a large tip will store heat therefore temperature drop will not be as bad ) Most lead free solder melts at 230c
@tennyson0228 Only if you keep the heat on the board too long, secret is to make sure the tip is clean and tinned, a gel flux is good as it aids the removal.
If you have a scrap board practice on that, ask your local phone store if they have any.
you are the best!!!!!!!

As I said the problem is that the solder iron has got no temp control but it goes up to 400C with regards to the tip it is about 1.2mm...
Is liquid flux sufficient? If not what difference is between the gel one, and liquid/pen driven flux?
unitedforhelp 3 months ago
@unitedforhelp the gel flux does not evaporate as fast as the liquid.
I use a liquid flux most of the time, I only use gel when I get a bridge.

I have a Weller WESD51 50 Watt .... is this too much wattage for this type of work - I've read that you shouldn't use more than a 15W iron?
Thanks again!!

@offmains Yes variable temp. I was reading that 50 watts might be more than some boards can handle and you can end up damaging the boards .
Thanks so much for you help

Firstly can I say you sound like Mr Bean :)
Secondly - very good tutorial, I've been doing phone repairs for some time now and want to start soldering.
Can you advise me on supplies you'd recommend. And particular liquid solder and just any soldering iron?
Many thanks again for the video brilliantly demonstrated.
xbabsybabex 4 months ago
@xbabsybabex Hi, many thanks.....Mr Bean!
Liquid solder is Sirius 1 DI from mbouk.co.uk.
I use a variable temperature Weller solder iron,I use the WMD 3 but any of the cheaper Weller stations will do.
A good selection of tips for the solder iron.
You will need desolder braid, gel flux, tip cleaner/tinner all from mbouk.co.uk
A must is a magnifying lamp.
