THC however is a very mild AchE inhibitor. It is not likely to cause any overt toxic effects (or you would have to smoke a dump truck full).
The long term problems with pot are THEORIZED to be because of the mild chronic AchE inhibition causes the receptors in the brain to be downregulated (mamilary bodies, specifically). And thus the formation and access of memories are inhibited.
A smart person would still be smart, just slightly less so than his or her potential.
must say, you lost me with some of the terminology, though I got the general idea. I'm no expert, and by the sounds of it, you didn't learn all that from a passing interest in the subject, so, if decreasing levels of acetylcholine affects memory assimilation, storage and retrieval... imagine the reverse. If Ach levels slowly increase (at a suitable rate not to cause harm) would that suggest a possible increase in memory capabilities, or would the body (brain) just adapt?
For Ach to be effective, the receptors must be present & active. If you flood the cleft with too much Ach frequently or over a long period of time, then the receptors would be downregulated. That means they would be inactive, or internalized & the Ach would have less of an effect.
This is the body protecting itself from overstimulation.
So increasing the Ach over time would have no net effect. But sudden withdrawal would cause negative effects.
So in a chronic pot smoker (like my brother) his memory is intact so long as he has his pot periodically. If he stops for a day or two, he gets very grumpy & forgetful.
That is because his Ach levels return to "normal" and he has fewer or fewer active receptors.
At the muscular level, he suffers a bit of mild weakness, because the post-synaptic receptors are downregulated (kind of like a temporary myasthenia gravis, look it up in the wiki).
The mamilary bodies are parts of your brain which are crucial to memory formation. They are also especially vulnerable. They are the structures destroyed in Alzheimers that result in the dementia.
So THC in the short term may improve their memory, because it causes increased Ach. Whether that would work long term is in interesting question, since in Alzheimers the Ach levels are chronically low. It is possible that they would not be downregulated in that case.

actually, weed does impare your brain cells. I could give you a dissertation on this, but i cant be arsed. Put simply, weed (THC if you want to be pedantic) enters into the nervous system and inhibits the re-uptake of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. The opposite. If Achase is not breaking down Ach, then you increase the concentration of Ach in the synaptic cleft, and its effects. Like organophosphate poisoning. You would get muscarinic side effects.

An extreme example of this is VX gas, or "nerve gas" resulting in uncontrollable muscle fasciculation & parasympathetic overload >> death.
IF you were to inhibit AchE to a lesser extent chronically (1)

THC however is a very mild AchE inhibitor. It is not likely to cause any overt toxic effects (or you would have to smoke a dump truck full).
The long term problems with pot are THEORIZED to be because of the mild chronic AchE inhibition causes the receptors in the brain to be downregulated (mamilary bodies, specifically). And thus the formation and access of memories are inhibited.
A smart person would still be smart, just slightly less so than his or her potential.

must say, you lost me with some of the terminology, though I got the general idea. I'm no expert, and by the sounds of it, you didn't learn all that from a passing interest in the subject, so, if decreasing levels of acetylcholine affects memory assimilation, storage and retrieval... imagine the reverse. For Ach to be effective, the receptors must be present & active. If you flood the cleft with too much Ach frequently or over a long period of time, then the receptors would be downregulated. That means they would be inactive, or internalized & the Ach would have less of an effect.
This is the body protecting itself from overstimulation.
So increasing the Ach over time would have no net effect. But sudden withdrawal would cause negative effects.

So in a chronic pot smoker (like my brother) his memory is intact so long as he has his pot periodically. If he stops for a day or two, he gets very grumpy & forgetful.
That is because his Ach levels return to "normal" and he has fewer or fewer active receptors.
At the muscular level, he suffers a bit of mild weakness, because the post-synaptic receptors are downregulated (kind of like a temporary myasthenia gravis, look it up in the wiki).

The mamilary bodies are parts of your brain which are crucial to memory formation. They are also especially vulnerable. They are the structures destroyed in Alzheimers that result in the dementia.
So THC in the short term may improve their memory, because it causes increased Ach. Whether that would work long term is in interesting question, since in Alzheimers the Ach levels are chronically low. It is possible that they would not be downregulated in that case.

actually, weed does impare your brain cells. I could give you a dissertation on this, but i cant be arsed. Put simply, weed (THC if you want to be pedantic) enters into the nervous system and inhibits the re-uptake of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Acetylcholine deficiencies cause bi-polar disorder (manic depression), amongst other things. Not trying to be clever, but it might not kill your brain cells, but it certainly fucks them up in other ways.

Organophosphates are acetylcholinesterase (Achase, or AchE) inhibitors. When you inhibit Ache, levels of Ach in the cleft rise.
When this happens in a case of organophosphate poisoning, there is no time for the body to adjust to the Ach levels, and the impact of Ach is increased.
An extreme example of this is VX gas, or "nerve gas" resulting in uncontrollable muscle fasciculation & parasympathetic overload >> death.
IF you were to inhibit AchE to a lesser extent chronically (1)

(2) antidote for organophosphate is pralodoxime (if within 3 hours), atropine and valium.
Pralodoxime knocks the organophosphate off the AchE, stopping the inhibition. Atropine is a muscarinic antagonist, prevents the excess Ach from reaching the receptors. Valium is to keep the exposed person from freaking out. Dopes them down so they don't panic.
The military anti-nerve gas pens is a mixture of all three drugs. VX can kill a human in less than 4 minutes. Hideously dangerous.

Alz is CAUSED by neurofibrilary tangles & beta amyloid plaques which disrupt the microtubules in the neurons, damaging intracellular transport. This damages & eventually kills the cell. It would also interfere with the formation of Ach, but that is a result, not a cause.
