Good work, JudeMaris. It's interesting to consider that in the 1963 version of Cleopatra, the actor playing Caesar, Rex Harrison, actually seemed to bear a pretty decent resemblance to the man in this sculpture, unlike Timothy Dalton in the 1999 version.
Gaius Julius Caesar, Princeps Senatus, Dictator, son of Ares and Aphrodite, famed savior of mankind. (Text from a statue of Caesar dedicated to him by the people of one of the Asia Minor Greek colonies).
Being a patrician, Caesar would not have been this dark in complexion as he would have not have spent as much time under the sun as a plebian farmer would have. According to Suetonius, Caesar was "tall of stature with a fair complexion". Just my two cents.
@OnTheGrand Yes, I'm aware of the History Channel's search for Caesar's death mask, though even the candidates they selected still looked heavily hand-sculpted / stylized to me. The best that can be managed is to get an average of published accounts of his appearance and modify the sculpture accordingly, which was what was done here.
@JudeMaris Do a search for The "Tusculum portrait". That is the only known bust of him that was created during his life. I would love to see a reconstruction of that particular bust and see how it stands up to this one. You have an amazing talent and I truly enjoy your videos. I subscribed after just watching a few.
@OnTheGrand The Tusculum portrait was the one ultimately selected by the History Channel experts to do their own reconstruction on (there's a related video of that in the side column) for the same reason you mentioned. You're an excellent historian! I could "redo" what has already been done for the sport of it. I have two Cleopatra videos, after all. Mmm. Thinking...
I've seen several busts of Julius Caesar and they all look different. One looks like George W Bush, another like Steve McQueen, another like Cary Grant. If Hitler had anywhere from 6 to 16 doubles or look-alikes, I wonder if it's possible that Caesar did too.
...The Roman historian Suetonius describes Caesar as "tall of stature with a fair complexion, shapely limbs, a somewhat full face, and keen black eyes"...
amazing

Good job, however, this bust of Caesar was created decades after his death. Only one bust from his lifetime remains.
