WOW!WOW!WOW! That was the light show I never remembered! But that brought it all back vividly. The Family Dog Denver Colorado .1967-68. 18 years old .63 now.thanks YouTube &Iphone.into Bill Monroe now & b4 then . Blue Cheer stood my test of time.God bless Blue Cheer & Bill Monroe!
@yesterway - leigh probably meant SoHo in nyc, as i dont think leigh ever played outside the US with blue cheer. I understand Randy was the guitarist for the london '68 dates and that leigh was fired before that.
I wrote an email to Leigh Stephens and ask him where the photo was taken on the inside covers of OUTSIDEINSIDE. He responded by saying "Soho". Anybody have any idea where that is? Thanks.
@yesterway He might have meant the Soho sections of either New York ( Half the 2nd album was recorded in New York.) , or even London ( The band was touring like crazy , playing , I think , twice in England before Randy came in and fulfilled other European dates.). Leigh relocated to London to do his "Red Weather" and form "Silver Metre", as it happens....One of those pics , at least , could've been from NYC or London (?).
The late 60's had a vibe that has never since returned. It was a hopeful time that the youth in the world would be able to impact change. Very much fueled by the Vietnam war and so many of our young men returning home in boxes. When at a big rock festival there was a unity among everyone . . a factor that cannot be put into words. It was a very cool time to be in my latter teens.
@akashalovelight - actually i think i read that it was Big Brother that played nude on muir beach. i dont think blue cheer would have gone nude for some reason. I have heard that several late 60s groups played nude, i think for instance Soft Machine and Arthur Brown among others.
First two albums were so innovative. Then they came out with New Improved Blue Cheer. .I had no idea why. Some record exec messed with the formula? Bill Graham would not allow them into his fold of bands . . but they developed their own strong following . I saw them at the Newport Pop Festival around this same time period. The audience was mesmerized. Summer Time Blues also charted.
I agree. I have always wondered why the change in style. I don't know how many hours I spent in the late 60"s and early 70's driving up and down Collins Ave on Miami Beach in my "hippie" van screwing sexy young girls and smoking marijuana listening to Vincebus Eruptum and Outside Inside.
Their early sound was one of the best things happening at the time. However, I could never understand how bands like Blue Cheer would destroy their amps and guitars (and drums) after they played . . I think started by the WHO. At the three day New Port pop festival, they tore up their equipment after they played!
I don't know where you are from but we could have been great friends. Just discussing this with you is fun. I was fortunate to have seen Blue Cheer at a place on Miami Beach called "Thee Image". At the time I had no idea who was playing just 10 feet away from me. If only I could relive the 60"s knowing what I know now!
@yesterway - I believe that club was owned by the 60s band Blues Image w/ guitarist Mike Pinera, who went on to play in iron butterfly in 1970 on their metamorphosis album.
I played guitar many years later in a Bill Graham Presents band. . . The leader was working on getting their early San Francisco sound back together. This was about a year ago with a band called GOLD. Previously they were called something like Panama Gold but dropped the Pot reference. To get into the Bill Graham fold was a big thing back in the day. . they opened for Janis Joplin, Ten Years after, etc.
@74LesPaul - The reasons for the change in style after the first 2 albums as I understand from reading interviews, is that Dickie really started getting into the country rock album 'music from big pink' by "The Band" that was released summer of 68. So dickie started wanting to write and sing in that style, which drove guitarist Leigh Stephens to quit, and shortly thereafter his replacement Randy Holden as well. Also factor in drug and money issues along with the differences in musical direction.
I also heard about the drugs issue from Dickie's Myspace page. Seems his wife managed much of Dickie's fan communications and website updating. Your comment regarding his desire to change music styles is interesting but I have a hard time accepting that he would get away from the heavy stuff especially when you look at the kind of music he continued to play in his geezer band.
@yesterway - The interviews are online, youre probably able to google them. One was a randy holden interview where he said he could not get dickie to shut up about how great he thought "The Band" was. I also believe leigh said similar in another interview, along with how he was not into drugs like the rest of em and it caused friction. yeah Dickie came back to the heavy stuff years later probably as a career move cuz few like the light country rock blue cheer stuff, so he had to return to heavy.
@yesterway i'm 48 now an i love hearing stories about the music that i first heard as a little kid in the late 60s an early 70s what a great time to hear music for the first time in my life.....i'm very lucky,i did'nt get it at the time, so as a teen in the late 70s, i had to do some back tracking, an studying, i remember one time i saw blue cheer, summer time blues, an i saw canned heat, lets work together on mtv's closet clasic's, an said WOW i remember this music i was there RIGHT ON...PEACE
@progjazzfusion I think that might have a lot to do with it, but , also , just the lineup change. Randy sure played heavy , but , in a different way. Even w/ Bruce and Ralph , they could've been "Heavy" (1st single together was.) , but , the Power Trio had something special. Country Rock - Burritos , Nesmith , even Rick Nelson - was coming in. The change did get Dickie un - banned from The Fillmore. He went Hard Rock again as early as 73 -4. The other LPs are now popular w/some.
