An IR diode at the bottom shoots out a plane of IR light, when you pass your finger through a part of that IR plane the message is sent back to the device by a CMOS which images where you typed. That is a bluetooth wireless laser keyboard for phones mostly, I wanted to buy one but damn 400$ is a lot for me. It works by measuring the distance of the laser beam from the surface to the laser diode it self. Usually glitches if the surface is not smooth. A really useful thing... just too pricy.
