It has been close to a year and the battery is still strong and I go through that door a lot on the weekend. If I were you I wouldn't add that resistor

I like your design. You may want to limit the initial charge current into the capacitor. I don't know if a large inrush due to Capacitor acting like a short, will cause shortened battery life. Just a cheep 100 ohm or so would limit this current. It may take a little longer to charge, but don't think it's a problem.

Doesn't the loud alarm scare you as much as someone walking through the door? I would set it up so an LED lights up in my view instead of a startling beep. Good video though, you've inspired me!
