why do afro descendent have so many different name.. like some say yo so negra and the other say morena... is there a difference?? i know a girl from panama and she told me she was morena.. i was confused because she was my completion.. im west african, so i dont understand too much, like am i considered a morena or negra or something like that... cuz in africa wer just call ourselves african.. so thats why im a little confused with all the different names
@ivoriancutie All those words mean the same. They are all euphemisms of the word "negra". For some black people from latinamerica to be called "negro" or "negra" is like for afroamerican people to be called "nigga". if you are a black woman, the you would understand the issues around these words. I use just two terms "negra" that has to do with the color of my skin and "afro" for my roots: african descent. the words "de color" or "morena" are trying not to hurt your "black" feelings
"LATINO" is a superficial term, so why they use it? they people they call "latinos" have nothing to due with latin, other than spanish derived from the latin, which the people in this spanish speaking country do not speak , neither they came from rome, which is now the capital city of italy!! so there need to be a condemnation of the use of this word for people who speak spanish in this hemisphere.
if you are a black man anywhere in the world, you are an afrikan. once you know roots and where you are from you will know where you're going. anywhere the spanish went in this hemisphere, they had african laborers(slaves) . they could could cut the limb of a tree but the root remain. africans, respect who you are and your roots.

When I was growing up in Medellin Colombia in the 1970s, there wasn't that much racism there because very few blacks lived there, you could count them. Back then the people in Medellin was primarily criollos(white Spaniards(Vasco-Andalucian) Germans, and other Europeans) born in Colombia but with a European ancestry.
Sad! White is not the answer to everything. Beauty comes in a mulitude of colors. I was digging you culture until I read your comments. It's hard to believe that Black are zero to none in your country. When black is strongly present all over your country, especially in your music. I hate to hear minority groups come to the U.S. and expressed their gladeness to be mixed with White has if it's some kind of trouphy from God. Disgraceful, try being you, and be glad to be from a mix hertiage.
No offense but many people in Antioquia and the Medellin area have some African ancestry in them. The area now known as Medellin was one of the centers and areas that were used for slaves to work etc and to continue the slave trade !
applesayce5440 but how many of those mestizos have Black African blood as well? A whole heap of them....I'd say about 50% of Colombians have African heritage somewhere down the line
in Census, your race is not counted, and in your I.D, no matter how white-skinned, how strong your European facial structure is, you are considered trigueño, so in reality, population that you would consider to be white is actually higher than 20 percent, I'd say around 30 percent, more or less. and no, Afro Colombians only make up 14%, mulattos and zambos have a separated denomination.
I'm from Medellin and when I was growing up there in the 1970s, there wasn't that many pure blacks. One here and there. In Medellin, there is a lot of white people. A lot of my friends in school were white, blond hair, blue and green eyes. My maternal grandmother was pure white, and so was my paternal grandfather. My other grandmother and grandfather were mestizos. When my maternal grandmother's mother died her father married a black woman, she hated blacks and mulatos even more.
In Colombia there is racism and prejudice. My grandmother was born in Colombia and her grandparents were born in Spain. My grandmother was white, blond hair, and green eyes. She was a racist. My mother told me that she didn't want her children marrying blacks. My grandmother didn't like my father because he had some black in him. My grandmother even was racist with her own grandchildren. She only liked the white ones. She didn't like me, because I came out mestizo like my father.
I'm a Colombian living in the United States. I came here with my mother, father, brothers and sisters. I am a mestizo. I'm 60% white, 20% native American, 10% lebanesse, and 10% black. I have 3 brothers and 4 sisters. I have 3 sisters that look completely white with brown hair. My one sister and one brother and me look mestizo(white and native American) my one brother looks completely white, only my one brother has dark brown skin but with European features and curly hair.
rootsnlivity, I like a lot the videos you have posted, As you are showing the world an other part of Colombia. Yet, lets not forget that races take sometimes a little role in our country as violence does not discriminate ant one and all Colombians are victims of the great social injustice. Yet must politicians are white and Colombia indeed has a great issue with racism. Another thing I wanted to state is that many colombians are mixed, and I think unity and respect is they key.
"Yet, lets not forget that races take sometimes a little role in our country as violence does not discriminate ant one and all Colombians are victims of the great social injustice."
For emphasis roots. We all have a right to feel pain. btw pm me you haven't returned my mails. How's life?
when i visit we all fit in black, white etc my cousin is from asain descent shes also mixed col.and asian. i dont know why the black colombians are seen as different compared to other countrys there really nice people and loyal i love them man i have friends there and my brother whos also black. racism should stop theres no point of keeping it alive i hope the struggles end 4 them. COLOMBIA FOREVER!
im a mix of black and white colombian parentz my momz black and my dads white my skin color is a light brown complexion i have curly almost nappy hair more like jheri curls. there is no racism that exist in colombia between both ethnicities rite now not that ive heard of.we all blend as 1 in my country wether your mixed or not we stand together in COLOMBIA i love my country.
Greetings sister, I respect your opinion but I have to make this clear, that is your experience. My experience has been different, I've been verbally assaulted numerous times by white and near white Colombians for my African heritage.I am quite tired of people trying to deny my experiences when I do not deny theirs. It's like a woman being raped and then you tell her she didn't get raped because raping doesn't exist where she's from.
To finish. Every persons pain is equally as important as the next. There will be those who deny your claims out of pure denial and there will be those that deny your claims because they have not felt it.However you cannot blame them for not seeing things like that. I talked to a couple of black colombian relatives of mines and black panamanians friends about predjudice in our countries and they told me i was stupid. It's not that they were denying your pain, they never felt it.
I'm not trying to homogenize the black experience in Colombia just speaking about experiences that are often kept quiet about and denied, I know I am not the only person who has gone through what I speak about.
youtube doesn't accept my large messages for some reason but too keep it short you are right it does happen and i cannot be ignored. It's insulting to me when i talk about racism towards latinos and americans dismiss it. i support you 100 percent
ya most dominicans dont claim their african heritage lol its surprising cuz they can be the darkest of hispanics but say im india and have nappy hair.if yall dont think u have any black in you look at carlton from fresh prince. lol hes 100% dominican but u can tell hes black...i never seen a black columbian but this is a cool video.
@LosMexicanoRaza yeah sure, even recent genetic studies done on so called white cubans discovered they have african ancestry, white cubans are like white southerners in the US, been around Black ppl so long they most likely have some sort of mixture
@LosMexicanoRaza yeah they are more spaniard but a lot of them still have african ancestry west african and north african through their spanish ancestors, not even their spanish ancestors were 100% white LOL!!!!
@rootsnlivity well in mexico its mostly still indigenous but the "white" mexicans love to exaggerate and say shit like "pinche indio"/"pinche negro" because theres afromexicanos of course
@LosMexicanoRaza so far in this DNA project I'm a part of, ALL the Mexican participants have at least 5% African ancestry, these are the typical "mestizo" Mexicans who are assumed to be African-less ancestry wise
Well I too have pride in my country and these too are my people. I am Mestizo but I go to el Choco everytime I'm in Colombia, I love it there. Black Colombians are some of the most humble, attentive and funloving people I've met. Just because someone shows pride in their country's diversity even though its because of a tragic history doesn't make them nationalistic. But Colombia IS amazing and many people around the world insult and reject it without even knowing it. Hence our sense of pride!
wel u shoud help promote the struggle down thier. these people are suffering becuase of the color of their skin how much do u really love your country and all its people? what is the true definition of latino is it light skin or white people with shiny straight hair or dancing the tango or runnin from ragging bulls? show your people some love and let America know the truth.
Well what are you proposing, separatism? Like it or not political boundaries are drawn and everyone within that region is considered colombian. China has over 41 ethnic groups and they are called Chinese (even the whites). i understand that you are trying to bring back ethnic identity from the brink of assimilation ,which is good, but leaning to wards such extremism only seperates man. We are all the same human under one God, if you don't believe in God then under one heaven.
true but the majority here are not denying that.if a white colombian sees a black colombian and says i love my country and it's people regardless of color you start lashing at Them. Isn't the ideal that you are trying to promote is harmony between human beings while maintaining a cultural identity? What is the purpose of criticizing people who humanely accept others?the socio-political situation right now states that anyone within the recognized borders of the country is called colombian.
I am not lashing at that person, I am just acknowledging the conceptuality that has kept Colombia's public awareness of racism silent for so long. It's a common philosophy found among many countries, like Brasil, they used to say and some still say "we're all Brasilian", and with that concept they try to deny the discrimination that's present. Another thing, many Indigenous peoples "within the recognized borders of the country" do not call themselves Colombian nor identify with anything having..
to do with Colombia...same thing with many Indigenous peoples within the "recognized borders" of Brasil who see Brasilians as a different people, because they do not identify with these constructs. How about "Colombians" and "Brasilians" are among the UNACKNOWLEDGED borders of INDIGENOUS NATIONS.
I am a very pretty Colombian woman. Arabic hazel eyes, abundant dark brown wavy hair, white skin and white features. I am White, Black and Indian. And my daughther is gorgeous is Blue (like greay) arabic looking eyes, White skin (like gringa), beautiful curly dark blonde hair, with Black nose. And her father's grandmother was biracial, with Black looking. She is the pretiest in the school. I don't care what I am as long I'm happy with the way I look who cares?
Aqui tienen a un colombiano bogotano "blanco" que adora a la gente negra de Colombia. Que vivan los afrocolombianos! Me gente! Cuenten conmigo para lo que quieran!
Aqui tienen a un bogotano "blanco" como la leche que adora a los negros de mi tierra colombiana! la gente mas linda del planeta! Que viva el afrocolombiano de mi tierra hermosa!
i think even brazil and latinos ect all got some black / african in their blood from their complextion and their figure the blackness in them is outshinning thats what i see cusss and am talking not only talking about those with dark skin colour those who got a fair almost like alica keys skin colour typ cuss we ALL KNOW HOW PURE WHITES/europians LOOK LIKE i surentenly dont see that in latinos,Colombian and brazialans i feel it all got 2 do with slavery what do you guys think????
That's not completely accurate, there are millions of European-descendants in South America, Central America and the Caribbean without any mixture. Many Germans migrated to Brasil and Colombia and have never mixed with any other populations.
Many black people in latin america deny their african roots and just claim to be hispanic. Oh, and good luck getting someone who has lighter skin to admit they have african blood.
My friend from the Dominican Republic who has caramel colored skin, but has hair so nappy he can pick it out and even had corn rows at one point in time. But the first time I called him "negro" he went into this tangent claiming to be 100% white/indian. Self hatred is pathetic.
sometimes it's not a racial thing. i know many jamaicans who don't mingle with blacks in this country because they are considered american. My friend ernesto proudly says i'm not black i'm panamanian and rightly shows his panamanian flag.
That would sound even more ridiculous in Panama. "No soy negro soy Panameño". They'll be like "tu eres un negro Panameño"- "You're a black Panamanian"...Blackness isn't only a U.S. societal construct it's a world societal construct.
your panamanian friend is not the norm. Maybe he has been in the states too long. We celebrate black history in panama and panamaians embrace our african culture. Your frined is probably from chiriqui or somewhere. Defintely not from colon, panama city,or changuinola. Also,we're not jamaicans and I have lots of black american friends. Tell your friend not to tell anyone he's panamanian.
Is Chiriqui mostly Indigenous? I saw pictures of Chiriqui and everyone was Indigenous. West Panama looks way different than the east Panama cities near Choco, Colombia where the Afros concentrate in Panama City and Colon. Where is Changuinola at?
Hate to break it to you but he is from colon and so is his wife.Born and raised of Jamaican grandparents. I made that statement because a lot of my jamaican friends have told me that a common stigmata from jamaicans is that they don't like to be associated with americans with african descent.
Yes that happened with my Dominican friend also he claims his African ancestry to be Native Indian. but you can blatently tell by looking at him its not. At least that's one thing we have in Colombia, We don't deny our roots no matter how opressed we are or what stigma comes attached with it...this video is a perfect example. Colombo-Britanico, Paisa and Londoner a mucho honor!
Most Dominicanos look what they are mixed, and plainly not white and black only. Some I could hardly tell from Spanish and a few looked like Haitians (they probably were because hoteliers like to pay low wages)
@LanguageNerd "Many black people in latin america deny their african roots and just claim to be hispanic" that's only Americanized Latin Americans, any black in Latin America will say to be that, black, and will proud-fully say it.
same as Latin Americans who take pride on being white, but the Americanized ones will not see themselves as white.
i miss my family in Buenaventura....barrio 12 de abril papi!!this video makes me feel like im there with them...thanks for posting!!que viva colombia!
ironically i was born across the border in venezuela. My dad is from Cali, barrio de salomia to be exact. My mother is from Palmira, en el centro. i seem to be more of european descent n complexion but gets dark. My brothers are really dark compared to me, so much that my ex asked if i was adopted. lol i guess i got the light gene as more dominant.i love cumbia and i defend afro-colombian heritage where ever i go. especially when it comes to true cumbia nd not the mex vesrion. you?
Yeah I know many mixed Colombian families as you describe. I am darker and more AfroIndigenous while my brothers look more European than African or Indigenous. My family on my mom's side looks either mostly Indigenous or AfroIndigenous and my father's side looks Afro-European and European. I was born in FL but my maternal grandmother is from Cauca, my maternal grandfather is from Nariño, my paternal grandparents are from Antioquia, and my parents are from Valle.
I love the AfroColombians in my family, ancestry, and lineage. My family has many of what you call Zambos in Colombia. That's typical of the Pacific coast and valleys near the Pacific coast. In the valleys and the Caribbean basin is where you find most mixture in Colombia. Like where me and you come from. We carry all the ethnic groups of Colombia through our veins. My family is basically Andean + Pacific with some Caribbean coastal cousins.
I am familiar with those 3 Colombian regions: Andes, Pacific, Caribbean. I am only missing the Amazon and Plains (Llanos) to complete seeing all of Colombia. I don't have family in those regions so it's more difficult for me to have access to those areas. Amazon is at a top part of my list because there are many Indigenous peoples there! I love Afro and Indigenous Colombia, because I am a child of them!
There are "pure" African descendants and Indigenous peoples in Colombia. Don't get it confused that's why I mentioned the mixed regions such as the valleys and the Caribbean basin. The Pacific and Amazon still have "pure" African descendants and Indigenous peoples, also the Maroon communities throughout the country. Through isolation these peoples resisted assimilation into a pro-European society and culture. Their resistance continues till this day.
btw we can't deny our european ancestry either. In Romes days the idea of race was different than ours and so went with through all of europe. Beleive it or not the most ancient tribes in germany were black. but it's not about superioriy of color it's aboput brotherhood and just like colors in a protrait we all give each other balance.
This video was done in an effort to foster self-identification by the PCN (Proceso de Comunidades Negras) and producers/directors Juan Mejia and Roosbelinda Cardenas.

Another thing I wanted to state is that many colombians are mixed, and I think unity and respect is they key.

when i visit we all fit in black, white etc my cousin is from asain descent shes also mixed col.and asian. i dont know why the black colombians are seen as different compared to other countrys there really nice people and loyal i love them man i have friends there and my brother whos also black. racism should stop theres no point of keeping it alive i hope the struggles end 4 them. COLOMBIA FOREVER!

I would have to disagree also. I have friends from buenaventura nad they tell me racism is terrible in colombia.
ORTA47 3 years ago
im a mix of black and white colombian parentz my momz black and my dads white my skin color is a light brown complexion i have curly almost nappy hair more like jheri curls. there is no racism that exist in colombia between both ethnicities rite now not that ive heard of.we all blend as 1 in my country wether your mixed or not we stand together in COLOMBIA i love my country.
romama123 3 years ago
Greetings sister, I respect your opinion but I have to make this clear, that is your experience. My experience has been different, I've been verbally assaulted numerous times by white and near white Colombians for my African heritage.I am quite tired of people trying to deny my experiences when I do not deny theirs. It's like a woman being raped and then you tell her she didn't get raped because raping doesn't exist where she's from.
rootsnlivity 3 years ago
These individuals are very abusive and Colombia has some of the worst racism I've seen.
rootsnlivity 3 years ago
It's not that they were denying your pain, they never felt it.
cfG21 3 years ago
It's one thing to promote it but you have to realize that there are some who haven't experienced what you have.
cfG21 3 years ago
I'm not trying to homogenize the black experience in Colombia just speaking about experiences that are often kept quiet about and denied, I know I am not the only person who has gone through what I speak about.

@LosMexicanoRaza yeah sure, even recent genetic studies done on so called white cubans discovered they have african ancestry, white cubans are like white southerners in the US, been around Black ppl so long they most likely have some sort of mixture

@rootsnlivity mulattoes and maybe afro mestizo the white ones tend to be more spaniard
LosMexicanoRaza 9 months ago
@LosMexicanoRaza yeah they are more spaniard but a lot of them still have african ancestry west african and north african through their spanish ancestors, not even their spanish ancestors were 100% white LOL!!!!
rootsnlivity 9 months ago
@rootsnlivity well in mexico its mostly still indigenous but the "white" mexicans love to exaggerate and say shit like "pinche indio"/"pinche negro" because theres afromexicanos of course
LosMexicanoRaza 9 months ago
@LosMexicanoRaza so far in this DNA project I'm a part of, ALL the Mexican participants have at least 5% African ancestry, these are the typical "mestizo" Mexicans who are assumed to be African-less ancestry wise

rootsnlivity 3 years ago
Well I too have pride in my country and these too are my people. I am Mestizo but I go to el Choco everytime I'm in Colombia, I love it there. Black Colombians are some of the most humble, attentive and funloving people I've met. Just because someone shows pride in their country's diversity even though its because of a tragic history doesn't make them nationalistic. But Colombia IS amazing and many people around the world insult and reject it without even knowing it. Hence our sense of pride!

wel u shoud help promote the struggle down thier. these people are suffering becuase of the color of their skin how much do u really love your country and all its people? what is the true definition of latino is it light skin or white people with shiny straight hair or dancing the tango or runnin from ragging bulls? show your people some love and let America know the truth.
touggie2000 3 years ago
Well what are you proposing, separatism? Like it or not political boundaries are drawn and everyone within that region is considered colombian. China has over 41 ethnic groups and they are called Chinese (even the whites). i understand that you are trying to bring back ethnic identity from the brink of assimilation ,which is good, but leaning to wards such extremism only seperates man. We are all the same human under one God, if you don't believe in God then under one heaven.
cfG21 3 years ago
It is not extremism to recognize the TRUTH. For far too long all this has been kept silent. We are just recognizing social issues.
rootsnlivity 3 years ago
true but the majority here are not denying that.if a white colombian sees a black colombian and says i love my country and it's people regardless of color you start lashing at Them. Isn't the ideal that you are trying to promote is harmony between human beings while maintaining a cultural identity? What is the purpose of criticizing people who humanely accept others?the socio-political situation right now states that anyone within the recognized borders of the country is called colombian.
cfG21 3 years ago
I am not lashing at that person, I am just acknowledging the conceptuality that has kept Colombia's public awareness of racism silent for so long. It's a common philosophy found among many countries, like Brasil, they used to say and some still say "we're all Brasilian", and with that concept they try to deny the discrimination that's present. Another thing, many Indigenous peoples "within the recognized borders of the country" do not call themselves Colombian nor identify with anything having..
rootsnlivity 3 years ago
to do with Colombia...same thing with many Indigenous peoples within the "recognized borders" of Brasil who see Brasilians as a different people, because they do not identify with these constructs. How about "Colombians" and "Brasilians" are among the UNACKNOWLEDGED borders of INDIGENOUS NATIONS.
rootsnlivity 3 years ago
good point.

LanguageNerd 4 years ago 19
sometimes it's not a racial thing. i know many jamaicans who don't mingle with blacks in this country because they are considered american. My friend ernesto proudly says i'm not black i'm panamanian and rightly shows his panamanian flag.
cfG21 4 years ago
That would sound even more ridiculous in Panama. "No soy negro soy Panameño". They'll be like "tu eres un negro Panameño"- "You're a black Panamanian"...Blackness isn't only a U.S. societal construct it's a world societal construct.
rootsnlivity 4 years ago
your panamanian friend is not the norm.
ORTA47 3 years ago 3
Is Chiriqui mostly Indigenous? I saw pictures of Chiriqui and everyone was Indigenous. West Panama looks way different than the east Panama cities near Choco, Colombia where the Afros concentrate in Panama City and Colon. Where is Changuinola at?
rootsnlivity 3 years ago
changuinola is about an hour from the costa rican border. most of the people came from colon or panama city to work when banana business was going.
ORTA47 3 years ago
Hate to break it to you but he is from colon and so is his wife.Born and raised of Jamaican grandparents. I made that statement because a lot of my jamaican friends have told me that a common stigmata from jamaicans is that they don't like to be associated with americans with african descent.
cfG21 3 years ago
Who is from Colon??
chsn09 2 years ago
Yes that happened with my Dominican friend also he claims his African ancestry to be Native Indian. but you can blatently tell by looking at him its not. At least that's one thing we have in Colombia, We don't deny our roots no matter how opressed we are or what stigma comes attached with it...this video is a perfect example. Colombo-Britanico, Paisa and Londoner a mucho honor!

@LanguageNerd "Many black people in latin america deny their african roots and just claim to be hispanic" that's only Americanized Latin Americans, any black in Latin America will say to be that, black, and will proud-fully say it.
same as Latin Americans who take pride on being white, but the Americanized ones will not see themselves as white.

rootsnlivity 4 years ago
ironically i was born across the border in venezuela. My dad is from Cali, barrio de salomia to be exact. My mother is from Palmira, en el centro. i seem to be more of european descent n complexion but gets dark. My brothers are really dark compared to me, so much that my ex asked if i was adopted. lol i guess i got the light gene as more dominant.i love cumbia and i defend afro-colombian heritage where ever i go. especially when it comes to true cumbia nd not the mex vesrion. you?
cfG21 4 years ago
Yeah I know many mixed Colombian families as you describe. I am darker and more AfroIndigenous while my brothers look more European than African or Indigenous. My family on my mom's side looks either mostly Indigenous or AfroIndigenous and my father's side looks Afro-European and European. I was born in FL but my maternal grandmother is from Cauca, my maternal grandfather is from Nariño, my paternal grandparents are from Antioquia, and my parents are from Valle.
rootsnlivity 4 years ago
I love the AfroColombians in my family, ancestry, and lineage. My family has many of what you call Zambos in Colombia. That's typical of the Pacific coast and valleys near the Pacific coast. In the valleys and the Caribbean basin is where you find most mixture in Colombia. Like where me and you come from. We carry all the ethnic groups of Colombia through our veins. My family is basically Andean + Pacific with some Caribbean coastal cousins.
rootsnlivity 4 years ago
I am familiar with those 3 Colombian regions: Andes, Pacific, Caribbean. I am only missing the Amazon and Plains (Llanos) to complete seeing all of Colombia. I don't have family in those regions so it's more difficult for me to have access to those areas. Amazon is at a top part of my list because there are many Indigenous peoples there! I love Afro and Indigenous Colombia, because I am a child of them!
rootsnlivity 4 years ago
We all are. It's amazing how our culutre is so mixed isn't it? Even spain is a mix of arabian, african, and european heritage.
cfG21 4 years ago
There are "pure" African descendants and Indigenous peoples in Colombia. Don't get it confused that's why I mentioned the mixed regions such as the valleys and the Caribbean basin. The Pacific and Amazon still have "pure" African descendants and Indigenous peoples, also the Maroon communities throughout the country. Through isolation these peoples resisted assimilation into a pro-European society and culture. Their resistance continues till this day.
rootsnlivity 4 years ago
true
cfG21 4 years ago
btw we can't deny our european ancestry either. In Romes days the idea of race was different than ours and so went with through all of europe. Beleive it or not the most ancient tribes in germany were black. but it's not about superioriy of color it's aboput brotherhood and just like colors in a protrait we all give each other balance.
