I haven't read all the reviews, so I dunno if this was brought up. Though it looks like the problem you were having is a lack of light. The camera recognizes the image with a stark contrast between the black and white colors on the card. If it's too dark to recognize the white on the card then it won't read properly. For your over head light take off the shade and use the 60watt reveal lights from GE. It's a very clean white light.
