The Coyote X, was not built from a Manta Montage kit car, itself a replica based on the McLaren M6GT. Like many kit cars of the time, the car uses a chassis from aVolkswagen Beetle and its engine from a Porsche 914.For the second and third seasons, producers used a different Coyote, which was based on a De Lorean DMC-12, as Brian Keith had difficulty getting in and out of the original Coyote.
In the late 70's early 80's there was a popularity of VW based kit cars. This was supposed to look like a really cool race car, but was really a VW underneath. in the 2nd season they took a Delorean, removed the stainless body and put a Manta kit body on it.
I guess the cops jurisdiction ended at the the gates... lol Not that TV is any better today, but TV of the 80 was just really fucking stupid... I mean some of the unbelievable shit they neglected to correct like the headlight thing here... and people just ate this shit up... or the turbo boost jumps of night rider with the toy model cars in the shot.. Just trips me out I guess.
ive drove better then that or the same to get away from a cop.
i was driveing a 1998 mustang hatchback that was built with a 5.0 engine five speed tran. and a positive drive rear end.
most people that know about this rare 5.0 calls it a sportster because it is 5 hundred pounds lighter then a gt mustang. and has a better chip in its engine.
.so it beats close to same years mustangs easy. even beats most new cars.
mistyped it oh well but after the 1987 through 1993 mustangs the body style changed along with the engine the 4.6 was shit i agree my girlfriends sister bought one new and thought it was so great. it was a dog and had no seat space at all i cant even believe a man could drive one they were so confined.
They changed the donor car later on. I heard it was a DeLorian, so bits of everything including Renault. A few years after this was out a fella in our street in Fife no less had one but it was black. Looked the mutts. No one ever thought it was a kit car or at least asked. Everyone thought it was some exotic such was the top draw finish on it.
Manta Montage. I saw one on the original Gone In 60 Seconds. Spittin' image of the car you see here but with some minor differences. Have seen this since the 80s, I might add.
That car must be a Volkswagen underneath, they all were. Then they just dubbed-on a Ferrari engine noise like they did in Starsky and Hutch. I remember seeing a flip top Nova (a kit car) over here which looked spectacular. Then this guy got in ,started it up and there was the chug chug chug of a Beetle engine-everyone fell about!
@Barron501 Probably the engine from one but on a beetle chassis I would think. the Bug was a gift to the 'alternative car' fraternity with its ditchable shell but drivable floorpan. The minus points were the handling (better on the later ones) and those awful organ-pedals! I knew a guy with a Baha bug. The first time he braked in the rain the front wheels locked and he slid into the back of the bloke in front! It braked better with a bag of sand or at least a full tank up front!
It appears to me as if the cop cars were waiting just around the corner. He opened the garage door flipped a 180 and sped out, and there they were. Stupid American mid-80's TV. I can't believe I was addicted to this show as a kid. Oh well, the car was nice...
I went to MGM Studios at Disney World in Orlando back in 1988, and they had a Coyote X sitting there with some other cars, like the flying police car from Blade Runner. Looks as good up close as it does in the series. I always wanted to drive the Coyote X when I was a kid and watched this show. Now, as an adult, I realize I couldnt afford the gas and insurance!
I can't believe cars(dot)com & Entertainment Weekly had the Mystery Machine & Flintstones Rockcar in their Top 10 of the best cars on TV. They left the Coyote out of the Top 10 entirely. Biggest snub. WTF's up w/that - putting 2 cartoon cars ahead of a real life action drama speed machine like the Coyote?! WTF was so damn great about the Mystery Machine anyhow?! The Coyote was sweeet - that & Crockett's 2 Ferrari's on Miami Vice.
I'm sorry - I stand corrected - it was NOT Entertainment Weekly - it was rather TV Land that had the Mystery Machine & Flintstone Rockcar in their Top 10 & left out the Coyote from H&M - they & cars(dot)com both. Cars(dot)com also put Jason Lee's piece of shit car from My Name Is Earl in the Top 10 - now how in the hell can that be better than the Coyote?! Those Top 10's were a fricking joke!
How far back does this show go back I remember the guy's mullet and his partner the guy who's sea captain that catches fish to sell frozen fish sticks lol, but I recall the auto having oval headlights I still love the body of the car and the A-Team Van are the coolest wheels I would like airwolf if the copter wouldn't look so bulky
The Season one coyote was a different car than the second season Coyote, which was a frame and engine of a Delorean and kit. Brian Keith had major trouble getting into and out of the original coyote. It sat much lower. The original Coyote is built upon a Volkswagon chasis and a Porsche 914 engine. (So I have read) ;) I love how at the end of the clip, you see both headlamps blow, one actually comes out of the car, next view of the car, both headlights on!
@1badsteed All of the cars used 350 chevy engines designed for stunt work. None of them ever had Porsche or VW engines and all the sounds were dubbed in for the engine. IT was all in a big article in Hot Rod mag when the show was still in produtcion.
Tv always did try to make dumb criminals. You rip what you sew if you constructed it improperly. My guess is that these programs were for undermining of societies and not building intelligent criminals.A lass freedoms of the states make things so easy!
Thanks for posting, it's been years since i've seen this show. I remember the Coyote well though. That's the thing about shows back then, they wanted to fool the audience, making us think those TV cars were indestructible, and after jumps, it looked as if they were A-OK. LOL We all know better though, just like in Knight Rider and Dukes of Hazzard. We know what really happened to those cars after a jump, they got tore up to hell, with only a few parts salvagable.
lmao i love how he busted the lights after he jumped the police car n gate, but they're miraculously okay when he does the 180° brake. lol they clearly got fcked up. ah the 80s
I think this robbery is the one McCormick was put in jail for in first episode.... I cant remember why/how he got to keep the car through out the series though.
The Coyote at least in season one is a Mnata Mirage kit car with a modified nose, it was built on a VW super beetle with Porsche 914 motor and interior componets from a Ferrari 308 including seats, shifter console, and guages. season 2 and on the Coyote was built on a DMC Delorean of all cars, it retained the Ferrari interion but the drivetrain was factory DMC.
i'm thinking it sounds like a lamborghini, but then again they dubbed a lot of sounds back then. it sounds like the lamborghini from cannoball run but also the ferrari in national lampoon's vacation.

agree with studmuffn. this car remnds me of a lancia stratos. anyways, great video. notice when he lands after jumping the gate, he blows his bulbs only for them to be re-ignted when he pulls up. lovely.:)
I remember having the hot wheels version of this car!! But darned if I remember what I did with it at that ripe age of 8!! Oh well, I guess as kids we don't always take good care of our toys.

In this, the Coyote looks (and sounds) like a Lambo, or very similar (at back, in this clip, the exhaust looks like a countach)...
But if you look on the series, expecially on the gear's selector, it resemble very much a Ferrari (... check out the Intro...)
Like all tv series, there was a lot of prototypes, most of all made in different ways (sure cheaper for jumping scenes...)
