Ugh.. Wizardofchron i agree with you man . These EXPERT village bullshit are always useless.. Well if anybody can help me please reply to this. Ive been playing for a while now. Id say for about a year. And ive recently got into jazz. So im looking up how to improv over a backing track. Im pretty good when it comes to blues because thats all ive played all year. Now im trying to learn jazz improv. can anyone help? What scale should i use? Major? How do i improv? Any examples?
fair question, can only offer tips. learn to play over the changes[chords] by looking at what scales they come from. think of scalechords as one entity. in G play Gmaj over E7 play E mixolydian, may only be one bar of each, continue with Amin and D7 . this is a 1 6 2 5 prog. learn 2 5 1's from the great players, you will never copy them and will always be your own man. for modal sound ask mate to strum Dmin 8 bars and Eb7 8 bars, play the C scale over the Dmin7 and Eb7 mixolydian over Eb7.
sit down and listen to a jazz record and pick things up by ear. i watched a bunch of these and didn't learn a thing that i didn't already know. i still can't play jazz tho
Harmony has changed over the years with respect to the 7th degree chord. Today they play what is often called a half-diminished/min7flat5 chord but in older books & classical harmony you'd play a true diminished chord. So in Cmajor this man(and modern books) suggests you play these notes BDFA but classical harmony tells you to play B,D,F,Aflat. of course A flat is not in the key but it's a pleasing leading tone.
this is so not in the spirit of jazz, rigid orthodoxy and jargon. jazz and music is about life and beuty not triads and scales. im sure django would show you his two fingers
learning theory can only increase your ability to play music "about life and beauty". you cant play without triads and scales. if you do, then you obvioulsy cant play any chords or play in key. sure music is noise but its organized noise. if you can play without formal training, it doesnt mean you dont know triads and scales. it just means you dont know the formal theory behind them. but the concept is the same.
well i think as long as you can find a balance between the theory and joy of making music you'll be fine. like i know scales and modes and how to harmonize but when im actually playing, i dont ever think in terms of note names and intervals, scale degrees etc... i just think in terms of music and how it sounds and the emotions im trying to convey. but knowing a bit of theory before hand sure helps. im no theory buff though but what ive picked up over the years has helped me for sure.
You can learn the basics, but to really sight read and read music proficiently, you have to study for years. Don't act like you could just sight read an F# half-diminished chord after an hour.
They may not know It's an F#7b5 but a competent human being should be able to tell you when they're looking at an F# an A a C and an E after sixty minutes of quality instruction and a willing attitude.
music theory and notation is like a foreign language. you need to sit down and study it for years until it makes sense. sure you can get a guy who picks up an electric guitar and learns to play a slayer song in 10 minutes. but can he read and understand notation?
its very technical and i agree with beole7705--this isnt for beginners. without a comprehensive explanation of what he's saying, its just going to sound like gibberish.
Thanks, good stuff. I have been learning theory and composition as long as i have been learning guitar, (only 8 months though) so this makes a lot of sense to me, yeah man, you do kinda move fast, but everything you say checks out when I paused you every couple lines. Don't get discouraged everybody, we all learn differently. I taught myself how to play with Ralph Denyars Guitar handbook and it has been a great guide. Just have fun playing and this kind of stuff will happen for you.
I liked the lesson. It made sense to me. It is important to note that beginning jazz is not for the beginning guitarist. Jazz is a study for intermediate and up. Then it makes sense. The replay function is cool for folks who need to see more than once,(like me)
i've been playing for five years and this just went over my head the first time through, i had to watch it like 5 times to get what he was saying. WAY to fast, totally agree with you.
He surely knows what he is talking about... but he seems to be the only one... I don't understand the half of it, and I had had lessons. He forgot what it means to be a beginner.
yo i can play guitar i have ma own band but i self tought maself so i dont know the notes and now i want to learn the notes and stuff and play jazz dose anyone know were i can get lessons cuz i thought this wuz for begginers not for like experts
seems more like you are trrying to impress yourself about yourself. This is an instant turnoff for beginners.

if you want to learn guitar as a beginner, do NOT come to expert village.
however if you do have a sturdy basis on theory expert village can be very helpful.

so you think learning is a bad thing?

yes but dont you find people are so hung up on it they cant see the wood for the trees. music is the fruit of love, not scales.

I think that a ton of beginners just got intimidated and lost all interest in jazz. Slow it down dude.
