  • Top vid guys awesome sailing. i sail a tiger out of cawsand bay about 1.5 hrs from falmouth its the most awesome boat i notice when you're sailing off the wind with the kite you have the daggerboards half out i used to do this but ive heard from different people about leaving them down to give the boat lift?could you shed any light on this? thanks keep up the good work

    In low winds I tend to sail with boards full down, for the lift, to lift the hull and reduce drag. When the wind gets up i lift them up progressivly more, especially if you are wanting to go downwind. With them down it just tends to trip the boat up and you get all lift and less speed. Just try lifting them, does make a massive difference.

  • Yes - best performance if the windward hull is out of the water (eliminating hull drag) , but not too far (ideally just skimming).

  • Nope - you want to get the windward hull just out of the water, which is what these guys are doing most of the time. You're right for dinghies with one hull - they should be sailed as flat as possible.

  • and if you're flying the windward hull while reaching, you can lift the windward daggerboard out of the water to reduce drag

  • better to keep the windward daggerboard down and raise the leward board - that way if the windward hull raises to far the bottom hull can "slip" sideways and assist to prevent capsize. But then again tigers get around a 1nm course so quick ur better off focusing on tactics and smooth sailing than stuffing around with centre boards unless its really light.

  • like i said, when your windward hull is out, raise the daggerboard of that hull to reduce drag... and besides if your cats going over it's going over... with a sail that size theres not much you can do XD

  • @DrummerInTheCity1091 hmmmm I'll stand by raising the leward daggerboard, not the windward daggerboard. It will assist to prevent raising the windward hull beyond an efficient height and also therefore assist against a capsize. But being a 16 sailor, I don't really need to worry about daggerboards. Our hull profile prevents the kind of slippage that a Tiger Hull would accomodate. Anyways, I thought Tigers fly a hull in under 10 knots.

  • ya but think about it if your flying one hull and you life the leeward daggerboard, yes i agree you will have a small speed boost, but, in a race, what are you going to do when its time to tack, its already ahrd enough to tacdk a 18ft tiger, let alone with only one daggerboard! but yes you arte right when using a 16 or straight out dragracing raising tthe leeward board can be helpful,

    cants go faster as there is less friction with the water when you are flying a hull

  • LOL ur so dumb, ok, say your trying to sweep your arms though water... not too fst... now sweep one arm.. much faster, the idea behind it is drag, , when using one hull you dont have to push nearly as much water as when using just one hull

  • imbicile, the weight is being pushed onto the leeward hull anyway, and unless your sinking the leeward hull when flying the windward one,(which means you have a problem) its the water moving over and around the hulls that create drag, the pushing aside of water is what you are thinking of, whihc contributes, but on an 18ft where not mutch of the hull is underwater its not the ladder causing the most drag

  • i feel like i should clear things up, by flying 1 hull out of the water firstly you reduce drag, secondly this creates lift allowing the boat to point much higher upwind, while doing this you need the rig to stay as effcient as possible basically as upright as possible. so we sail the boat with the windward hull just skimming, no drag, creates lift and the rig is not leaning over too far. believe me its much faster!
