The waves look so mild at EI, people don't realize there are rip tides and undercurrents that can pull you around like a ragdoll. EI needs lifeguards, I'm glad your husband was able to help.
@JOM123456 no not teachniclly its becuase the board voted for them to be gone and there are lifeguards just none on the beach there by piers and the steps to get to the beach
My dad was one of the rescuers... he used to be on the rescue sqad. When the little girl got back on shore she was SCARED. My dad and his friends were exasted. I was really proud of them!!!
I am pretty sure there aren't any lifeguards anywhere on Emerald Isle. Now I am wondering about the rest of the beaches on the island? Do you know?
My husband surely understood the dangers of helping to rescue someone as he has been a certified lifeguard for most of his life(since early teen years) and many years of his adult life.
my family has a little beach cottage at emaerald isle, they do have beach patrolmen that drive up and down the beach to make sure everyones ok but they probably were heading the other direction when that happened its good he saved them :D
i am former AB &a current outer banks lifeguard i am appaled that EI does'nt have lifeguards on patrol . While i commend what your husband and friends did it was also really unsafe for them to go out without floation and honestly not all the people that went out to help looked like strong swimmers either.MANY people have drowned trying to help other people, esp. in EI. please remember that the ocean is nothing like a pool. look up info on rip currents!
It happened on 8/14. You probably didn't hear about it because there are no lifeguards. My husband and three friends were just bystanders who happened to be there to help. My husband used to be a trained lifeguard.
its a rescue offshore. not at sea.

I live on EI. We have no lifeguards because the city just refuses to provide them
