OMG-- the whole aria is beautifully sung, and she screws up the part that she was most famous for doing well: the pianissimo at 4:54. That's like sugar not tasting sweet.
@dougbalt I disagree with you - no, it's not the BEST I have heard (the version I have is a lot less....it's just a lot less), but you can't say it wasn't an excellent sustain.
@Klaudhius She is brilliant but I just don't prefer her for this type of repertoire. I just need some more "umph" behind her voice for this dramatic repertoire. However, her floated notes are par excellence.
I love Tebaldi in this even more than Price. Price early on was good, but I watched her perf's from the 80's and the middle voice seems very hollow comparatively speaking (to her own self from the Bell Telephone Hour version). Tebaldi had phrasing withing phrasing, dynamics within dynamics, couldn't believe what I was hearing, so musical.
There's something ineffably sad about Ms Caballe's rendition. She sings with a sweetness and vulnerability that few bring to this role. I found it helpful to listen rather than to watch this performance. And I appreciate her more now than I did when I heard her in Carnegie Hall once upon a time! Pretty stunning by the time she's done.

hmmm,,,are you sure? first, Maria has the best ever technique that nobody after her can just double,, also during her era audiovideo was not good, and how do you know Monts. is singing w/out microphone- it can be hidden,,,anyway,,Maria is just real greek goddess that appeared in the 20century...)
messa di voce, lovely pianissimo has been the best of Mrs Caballe, in fact she was a marvelous soprano for Donizetti and Bellini. Verdi may be not so much.
She is just straight up sassy. The old school is far and rare, if not dead. What is most admirable about this piece and Caballe is that she isn't making her voice something it is not.
So we only disagree minimally. We both love great singers, Caballe and Price. I cannot agree with you, but I hear what you aer saying. i simply prefer the Price "tone" in Leonora. However, I certainly only want to hear Caballe do Norma. I would still put Price first and Caballe second on this aria. Beyond that, I don't care to hear any other sing it. Call me close minded if youwish lol.
Grandissima Montsy.
OK, first of all, don't flame me, as I DO LOVE Ms. Caballe, but I feel Leontyne owns this aria. That being said, the only one who could come close would be Montserrat. Brava! Wonderful singing!
Stupendous use of that big lyric soprano voice under absolute control. Even though the tempo is slower Ms Caballe uses that to her advantage in pulling out the pathos in the aria.
There was a slight problem with "Invan la pace." Other than that, this is a great performance. Her sensitivity to the text and the way she accented certain words really added to the drama of this performance. She did not just sing the notes, which she was prone to do. She actually sang with passion and acted her heart out.! Brava Caballe!
Nice try with the private message, Adante, but it did't work. Consider this a final message. Get over it. This is a public forum. People express opinions. We don't all have to agree. Opera doesn't need your lofty devotion in order to preserve it's legacy. If someone doesn't agree, there's no need for retaliation. Disregard and move on. It's simple and I'll show you how it's done: Goodbye.
Well spoken like the FOOL I immediately imagined you to be! You are yet another artsy fartsy idiot who can't accept criticism against your beloved patron Diva. Your meaningless life lacks just that much. Oh and I'm quite sure you're interested in where my "head" goes, but frankly I'll decline your offer, thanks anyway. Go play with someone else, you whiny, corny-ass, prima donna loving wench.
YOU said listening to Tebaldi would teach me "something about vocal perfection." Don't back step because you have no argument. I can say many things about Tebaldi but nothing about a supposed "vocal perfection;" which she certainly DID NOT have. If you can't accept the opinions of others, maybe you should stop listening to music or at least commenting about it in public. Now put that opinion in your account, maestro.
My friend, your's is strictly a personal opinion. Listening to Tebaldi all day doesn't change anything. And she was NOT vocally perfect, no more or no less than other singer. She was notorious for flat pianissi on the final "Amore" of this aria. Maybe YOU should stop being a die-hard Tebaldi fan and open your ears to other singers.
Not totally bad, for Caballe; of course she's not the definitive Verdian soprano. Someone mentioned Renata Tebaldi 1958 as the definitive version of this aria? Why? She wasn't bad, of course, but let's just say she owed a hell of a lot to the conductor.
She does not know the style and she hasn't the verdian voice."O tanto duol" is of bad taste the way she does it, "invan la pace" is ruined and the final Bflat is a distressing note (shouted)
The amazing thing about her is that in 1979, she'd already been singing professionally for 22 years and still sings occasionally in her 70s. There's a recording on Youtube from 2005 in which she sings O Mio Babbino Caro, and I might ad, sings it better than some women young enough to be her granddaughter.
You're right, there is one faulty attack, and the tempi of the last section (usually too slow, I believe) are even slower here. But what great singing this is! Caballe excels in both dramatic coloratura bel canto and lyric-spinto roles, even slightly past her prime.
To Dymension re: Carnegie Hall: I would love to see that clip again. As I recall, it was sung unrehearsed, conducted by Levine for a PBS gala. It was simply spectacular.
