Currently working on the Esquerita bio for the British mag Blues & Rhythm,I'm looking for memories of people who met him and knew more you can find on various websites
@ensconse Actually, i have uploaded a song by Esquerita and at the end there is an interview with Little Richard. He and Esquerita crossed paths at the Grey Hound bus station in Mobile in the late 50s. Little Richard was waiting for his bus when Esquerita got off a bus and Little Richard was blown away by the hairstyle. He states, he copied it. However, I don't think Little Richard ever dyed his hair blue and had a microphone chord long enough to go out of a nightclub and into the street.
I was lucky enough to meet Esquerita back in 1984 at the launch of the Dr. Rock biography of Little Richard, at the Red Parrot Disco in New York (Manhattan). Esquerita appeared to be about 6 foot 8. Cool guy!
In '86, an excerpt of Richard and Esquerita jamming together that night was included in Richard's "60 MInutes" appearance. LR sang "Thank You, Jesus", while E. played piano.
Great version. I have another Esquerita version, less "produced". Richard did this song in the studio in 1970. But it was esquerita who copied RICHARD after Richard's successin '55! He taught LR some piano in the '50s.
Yeah, I actually played it twice before uploading. You're right. An absolute killer!!!! This one sort of got in my head today. You should sneak this one over to one of them clubs you go to. Glad you enjoyed!

sure! but not only his music is a killer, he was one himself too, perhaps! or how came that brutally slaughtered hustler boy into his mexican motel-room? hm?

Respectfully, I say that Richard took some elements of Esquerita's style but the pompadour hair..mostly Richard with a taste of Billy Wright.

This guy was a heavy influence on Little Richard in the 50's I believe..

Without him there would be no Little Richard. He was Little Richard before there was a Little Richard.
