This demo sold me on buying my first Amiga. That machine still has some amazing features even by today's standards. I later got the Toaster 4000 and became a free lance modeler and animator for a brief time on the side. Great times.
Great computer.... I still have two Amiga 2000's .... both still work..... I love Deluxe Paint... the easiest to use animation app ever written.. bless you Dan Silva...
I remember when Tim brought us this demo--it was also the first public announcement of the development of the Video Toaster, which had been rumored for a few months before he came to the Slipped Disk to speak to us. NOTHING in this demo was possible on stock IBM PC-compatibles of the time, which were limited to a palette of (at most) 64 colors--and limited mono sound. It's worthy of note that the song "Paranomia" was assembled entirely from samples in real time to save disk space.
Holy crap, this particular demo brings back memories. I remember I was in California at the time at a users group meeting in Berkeley when a team came in to demo the Toaster, the place was and has never been that packed. NewTek rules.
Oh holy crap I remember this on my Amiga 500. Man those were the days. Folks, remember this thing only had the 8 bit NES to compete with in terms of gaming.
i had a digiview, it was amazing. i had a camera with a slide wheel and scanned images in... a also pugged in a vcr and took stills, but the were monochome:(
Wow. This demo brings back memories. I had a job after school selling these things back in 1988 and 1989 as a 17/18 year old. This demo was played over and over when I was in the store. When I saw this, I remembered everything about the demo.
Back then every vendor, at Trade Shows, who were selling "video" computers, had the very same demo. I wonder how that little girl is doing now, the one with the third eye, on here forehead at 4:34. LOL
Yep. The Amiga was the first computer that could handle the pron. Realistic flesh-tone, I mean, not that 16-color junk on PCs or Macs or Commodores.. ;-)
I guess I got lucky. My local BBS had the pictures available for download, usually with a caption like "Here's Samantha Fox nude... she's all grown up now!"
boy, it is so amazing, when i saw this 21 years ago i thought it was amazing. i didn't even remember that it was just an advert with so many stills. i bought digi-view. it had a color wheel you were supposed to use to do three scans for color pics. it never worked worth a crap for me and i just scanned B&W
This demo made me dump my 3 week old Commodore 64 for a A500. It looks so cheesy now. "Hey look, color photos on a computer!" And they leave them up there for 5 seconds each so you can really look at them for a good long time and wish you could do that. 24 years later I'm still playing with color photos on a computer.
This brings back AWESOME CHILDHOOD MEMORIES. When my dad bought me my first Amiga... God rest his soul. I thought the Amiga was the best computer the world had ever seen, and it was. Newtek were the graphic Gods that uplifted the Amiga to new heights. So good network television studios all had Toasters. I remember watching this video, loved it then and sit amazed watching it now.
I so clearly remember seeing this for the first time. I was 12, and the Grace Bros department store in Bondi Junction, Sydney Australia had this on loop. Geeky as it sounds, it changed me, made me realise what I wanted to do. Here I am, 20 years later, working as a CG supervisor. Thanks Amiga, thanks Newtek! (Never learned lightwave though, shame on me...)
I miss the Amiga scene. I can only describe it as a "happening". So much going on around the world .. I was part of a bunch of guys in Sydney (AGASIG)who were right into graphics etc.. Some having internet access(in '90 !!).. aminet.. the diskmags..
*sigh*. We'll never see the likes of the Amiga scene again.. I'm proud to have been there at the start.
This sure did bring back memories... the Amiga was ahead of its time. When this Demo came out, PC's can only display 256 Colors and Bleep/Blop sounds..
The Graphics in this demo do look aged compared to what is out now, but back in 1987 this was like going from Standard TV to HDTV.
WOW! Took me back to my teenage years and when I'd watch this demo a thousand time on my Amiga 1000 and I think the monitor was a 1084S....so awesome. I was the coolest kid at school since I had an Amiga. That and my Tandy Color Computer...ha!
I remember seeing New Tek's Demo Reel II at World of Commodore in 1988, it was much better!! It had full motion scenes from StarWars and StarTrek, but it was never released... it would be nice to see that again....
OMG, i threw out all 3 Amiga's [upgraded A1200's with maths co-pro, 030, 040] not long ago :(
Along with an article in Commodore User in 1984, the promo material in 85 and videos like this (saw this in 88 on a friends Amiga) made me want to get an Amiga. I didnt get one till a few years later though.
This demoreel was the *ACTUAL REASON* I bought my first Amiga. Walked past an Amiga2000 on my way to *buy* an Apple IIgs and the thing said "Hello! Welcome to Newtek!" and I was sold.
... all thanks to "Maxine Headroom". (aka Laura Longfellow)
I reallyreallyreallyreallyreally wanted to be able to do this myself... and I used to call up and harass NewTek... alas, "Digi/FX" was *NEVER* released.

Thank you so much for this. I worked for a TV station at the time, and this NewTek demo reel completely changed our lives.
Now any $300 desktop PC can do what Amiga did.
But Amiga was special.

Something's wrong with the music in the early part of the demo.
And please reissue this WITHOUT THE FRICKIN' DISK SOUNDS!

I have a Amiga 2000 and Toaster. Can a 3.5 IBM floppy work in this machine? What kind of graphics can I import, what format?
calumettv 3 years ago
has to be formatted on the amiga unless you have aftermarket programs that let you read an ibm disk.
