I HAVE THE BEST WAY TO FIGURE OUT SOMEONE'S NAME WITHOUT BEING WEIRD. all you have to do is ask what their phone # is. when you have to fill in the name slot, either give them the phone to fill it in themselves, or you say," hey, im an awful speller, how do you spell you name?" and you are set. you really dont want to know how many times i have had to resort to that method. -_-'

What I always do is ask them to spell their name backwards. That way, even if it's a commonly spelled name, it's more difficult to spell backwards, so you don't look like as much of an idiot. And even if they can't spell their name backwards (correctly) you can get the gist of the name enough to guess what it is or make a nickname from it.
