edgylemon - My most favorite line from the song too, and yes so right pure genius, but also a person who understands the Human Condition very well. Beautiful metaphor indeed. Puts me in mind of that lovely quote - "All part of life's Rich Tapestry". We are all unique but are cut from the same fabric. Wonderful song.
the roxy...1985.... she'd just released her first, gypsy and luka were on the next...so it's like i was let into this very underground place.. i knew the secret handshake. my eyes still ache behind the man with whom i saw her...he introduced me to her music.... at the time worked at music+....
sonn we all will gather again in the mist where decisions will be made. New gardens will be planted and poets will be dispatched. They will sing and raise what love they can. Many hearts will bloom and send out their calls, Some will carry grace like waterfalls.Their gardens will be lush. They are well known throughout the cosmos, rare and sought after. Many calls go out to these but there's always one or two that weep with gratitude for a clan so deep roused so gently from sleep Suzanne I weep
I've been listening to Suzanne Vega since I was a teen but haven't really listened or watched her in many years. I am sooo moved by her brilliant writing and music. I'm not even sure if I even own her music anymore because I had it on cassette.
I remember after buying Suzanne's 'solitude Standing' album playing it and my pal laughing his head off and ridiculing the intro track 'toms diner.' A few weeks later he had bought it himself and said he couldn't believe how wrong he was...
I saw her on the 'Solitude Standing' tour and got her to autograph my album and couldn't really speak when she spoke to me. i felt like I was meeting some sort of Goddess :) She just smiled and shook her head at me as though to say 'calm down'...
This is definitely one of my favourite songs by Suzanne -- though she hasn't recorded a song I DON'T love. "Gypsy" is just a letter-perfect song -- sad, hopeful, complicated. It's too bad Suzanne is sometimes dismissed by the media as a one hit wonder (okay, maybe two hits if you include Tom's Diner). Her work has always been, and remains, unique, deceptively deep, musical, and inspired by both poetry and melody. Thanks for posting this wonderful clip of a great song.
I agree with you completely. This song is just so beautiful and brilliant- I can never stop listening to it. I've been listening to Suzanne Vega for as far back as I can remember- my parents used to play tapes of her in the car when I was growing up- and she never ceases to amaze me.
This is why I got all of her albums, I love all of them and I don't find that she has released a single bad song, her songs are great, not only touching and beautiful there are some with nice beats and everything.
I want to upload them all but I got them as MP3 files, not as videos and I know not how to work with this stuff.
Someone who has an amazing insight into the human condition - and also someone who can take words like ingredients in a recipe and mix it all up into a magic concoction lol
Suzanne tells the story of this song sometimes in concert. She met a boy from Liverpool,England when she was much younger and had a romantic encounter with him. An epic song. She later wrote another song with a Liverpool connection on the 99.9F album. I think she may still hold a torch for that guy!
This has been my favorite song for many, many years now and still I keep coming back to it time and time again. Now, there are a lot of close seconds, but this is tops. And that Suzanne is still at it and still as exquisite as ever is just spellbinding to me. I consider it an accomplishment of a major life goal to have seen her perform this song live twice, even. I hope to catch her sometime again to hear some songs off her new album, "Beauty & Crime."
I love the performance! She's so relaxed (much more than in the other live videos of the same song posted here) and thus sings beautifully, the mood is great...

@froggo66 And why is the media's biased opinion considered educated?

My favorite line is: "Yeah, now I've met me another spinner of strange and gauzy threads." Who writes that? Genius.
