Beautiful song. I know the boys appreciated it. I've been reenacting for 38 years and now have to retire from it due to my knees (VietNam) but I salute those brave boys from NC even though I'm in the 58th Indiana Mounted Infanry.
Just another example of lives uselessly thrown away by incompetent leadership. Iverson's brigade was allowed to drift off it's intended line of advance and fall prey to Baxter's brigade which was sheltered behind a stone wall. Baxter's brigade had just decimated O'neal's brigade of Alabamans, once again due to the lack of leadership and direction by O'Neal (who also stayed in the rear). General Rodes had also detached two of O'Neal's regiments. This also was another example of poor leadership.

I really enjoyed this song. What must our NC boys thought as they marched onto those fields at Gettsburg on those July days in 1863. So many never saw their beloved NC mountains again. God Bless the SCV and the UDC. Deo Vindice!
hello, i re-enact the ACW over here in the UK. i love this song it provokes so much imagery of dead bodies. also when i listen to your vioce on this song i can see in my mind dolly parton singing this song...????
@16lydgate That is so cool, mate! I did CW reenacting for 35 years untill my knees gave out due to age (61) but I still love the old music, and god bless you for loving our history. Yours is pretty impressive as well. I've been studying Rourke's Drift for many years and a would love to go see the actual site of the battle.
Hi @Mr19thIndiana, 23rd North Carolinians was the Reg. If you goggle Iverson Pits I bet you could find more on that battle. The song was inspired by the ghost story I read by Mark Nesbit called (Iverson Pits) in his short stories called The Ghost Of Gettysburg. Vol 1 I believe is where you will find Iversons Pits not positive but Check it out . Have a great day! Lisa

Very well done tribute to the men of the 23rd NC Inf Regt. and their families. Captain Ambrose F. Scarbrough, my Great Grandfather's first cousin, was in the 23rd North Carolina. He was killed at the Battle of Seven Pines on 30 May 1862 by a Yankee sharpshooter from 900 yards away. Its in the OR.

Great song! I just saw you perform at the Lehigh Valley Civil War Days, and I had to see if you had any songs here (though I was especially hoping for "No Longer Gray or Blue," which I absolutely LOVED).

Great song. To this day the vegetation in the 'Iverson's Pits' portion of that field is different... Darker.... Deeper green....

was the regiment wiped out in a battlefield? Is that what this song is about? Or just their bravery, either way its a really good song!
