Actually if my understanding is correct, it's infrared, not x-ray. Unlike X-ray, Infrared doesn't project anything, it merely recieves existing infrared light. They're merely calling it X-ray because of the simlarity in function and use to "X-ray specs" and Superman's X-ray vision. Infrared is generated by any heat source, but infrared is below red on the spectrum so it's invisible to the naked human eye.
