Dear C & J, I'm interested in Brade's naming of tunes. Please tell me about his 'invention' of titles. What is your evidence for saying the tune does not have some element of Scottish identity? Why do you consider the FWB (an unpublished MS) a more reliable source for this tunes name than Brade's published collection? FWB and Brade's Newe Auserlesene liebliche Branden are pretty much contemporary. All the best, Crowdercref

Brade's consort music has pretty well all been published in modern editions by London Pro Musica, this comes from the 5 part collection published in in Hamburg in 1617. The tune is actually called Pawles Wharf - it is in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book and in Playford's Country Dancing Master - and seemingly not a Scottish tune at all, Brade invented the title, as he did for most of the English dance tunes he published in Germany.
