Quincy was a copy-cat, too. The first, and the best show of the genre was "Wojeck", starring John Vernon. Wojeck was a lot grittier than Quincy. It was based on a real person: Dr. Morton Shulman. Check Wikipedia, if you don't believe me. You gotta love Jack Klugman, though. A great character actor, and (no kidding) the best hair piece in the biz.
Gotta admit, this show was way ahead of the copycats we see these days, and free to watch too, not some cable crap THAT STILL HAS ADS, what are we paying for that for anyways these days? If you charge for a channel, then get the commercials out, and any show that goes on a for pay channel, make sure that's true or broadcast on free networks.
Quincy ME the father of CSI, but it appears CSI surpased Quincy in popularity which means this show gets forgotton in the modern day and finds it's way in the bargin bucket that is a disgrace to me since this show is far greater than CSI ever will be.
Quincy is like a stubbon government mule which makes him an unique and entertainng character.
thumbs up if even though it's years later, you STILL don't wanna know or care to know anything about the contents under the white sheet he flipped back, lol,EVER,lol
@fdnyemt5330 One episode showed a close up of his business card which read "Dr. R. Quincy". The "R" was never revealed. Even during the final season when Dr. Emily Hanover (shortly later his wife) asks him what his first name was he wouldn't tell her.
This program inspired me to want to go to medical school but I never did go.....instead I went to prison and since have led a fucked up useless loser life in and out of the justice system just wasting my stupid life. It was a good tv program tho!
HOW COULD UGLY QUINNNNNNCY....SCORRRRRE WITH ALL THEM LAAAAAADIES.. OLD AND WRINKLED BODIEEEE....... HORRIBLE GREY TEEEEEETH....IF THIS WAS IN REAL LIFE...HE COULD ONLY LAY HIS FAT WIFE.... BUT HES QUINCCCCCY....... ON...TEEEEEEEEE VEEEEEEEEE!
Does anyone know which episode it was where Monaghan tells Quincy he's been involved with the dead too long and needs to work with the living for awhile? In that episode he fills in for another doctor's practice, helps a woman pregnant with twins, and solves another crime? I've dealt with so much death and sadness in my own family recently, I could use a viewing of this episode.
There was one episode that I found truly hilarious: it involved bite marks on victims being examined based on castings of the bite marks. In real life, bite marks leave bruises, not impressions that can be poured up as castings. When the bite marks were shown to be farther apart than the suspect could open his mouth, ummm.... Duh! Skin is flexible! Squeeze the skin, then bite!
This was one of my wife's favorite shows from her childhood. But for me, I just never could get past the image of him as Oscar Madison from the television show The Odd Couple. Oh well, still a cool show to see, and ahead of it's time too, as now we are overloaded with CSI shows.
@bigdannyg1969 Klugman (is that his name?) was a good actor. I liked in in the 2 or 3 Twilight Zone Episodes. "Pip", 1 about a great pool player and 1 about a trumpet player, and he was also good in 12 Angry Men.
I totally forgot about Death Ship and I can't understand why, considering it is 1 of my favorite episodes. I actually have id on DVD! Brain fart I guess? IMO it's 1 of the more "spooky" episodes. Also it's probably 1 of the best from season 4. Actually, all the episodes with Klugman are very good.
My mother LOVED this show so much as she felt the involved technology and research of Quincy was revolutionary. At the time, it certainly was. Now we see forensic shows all over, like CSI and NCIS. But that is why Quincy was such a great show; people like my mother somehow knew "this was the future". Old sea pirates used to say "Dead men tell no tales!" Thanks to forensic science, that is no longer true! CADAVERS CAN STILL TELL TALES!
Quincy was da bomb and CSI and the others can only try to copy. This guy was the best. I can remember this show starting and instead of going to bed I crawled out of my room and down the hall so I could watch this from around the corner of the living room where our tv was in 1976. I was almost caught, but it was worth it. What a show.
@Moistmuscle Funny, I *just* read about that in a book about Punk Rock. I just opened up to a random page and there was that dialogue from Quincy M.E. He said something like if music teaches kids to be suicidal, then its not music at all, its a death cult.
@fortesqueca:Quincy just did his job description, and little more than that, unlike CSI, who solve the murder and arrest people (which doesn't happen in real life.)
I used to watch this all the time when it was on in the afternoons on BBC1. I thought it was "the *most* fascinating sphere of police work", though -- sounds like this one's been edited for some odd reason.
@Marmiteums Dear Blithing idiot. A heavy smoker, Klugman was originally diagnosed with throat cancer in 1974. In 1989, he lost a vocal cord to cancer, but he continued to act on stage and on television. He survived the cancer, though the lost vocal cord has left Klugman with a raspy, scratchy voice.
So, no I don't think he would be smoking anything. And neither should you.
@stevefromPA2 Yeah, but as I was trying to say on another post(singing) the stuff the cops threw up from is now on CSI. Yes, it's not for real, but pretty convincing these days.
@mjjcng8958 same here they would always show those shows after the evening news and before id fall asleep i would watch them...seems like yesterday almost ...shit where'd the time go??
@klimber1000 You can go to walmart or somewhere and buy the DVD set. I bought 3 of them a few years ago. I need to get more!! I love Quincy!! I haven't watched many of the modern-day versions of the show (CSI, Crossing Jordan, etc) I think i will get the DVD's of those shows as well. You learn A LOT about the human body when watching shows like those. They are sooo damn interesting!
The opening scene is classic, where all the policemen puke and faint at the sight of a corpse. I can relate, as recently, i saw the video of an autopsy on Youtube, and started feeling quite queasy in the middle of it!!!! I DO NOT think i could ever work as a crime scene investigator, or even a coroner/forensic pathologist.
The most dishonest show in TV history. Half the shows HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH POLICE WORK. IN the last seasons 80 precent had nothing to do with police work.
@blakkjack21 YES THEY DID! I really liked Quincy. I remember an episode where high school kids were dying cause of the vitamin supplements they were taking (or something like that). Quincy went to the store where they were sold and slapped the shelfs clear just like dominos & left. The store owner called police and then Ashtin had to get Quincy out of jail.
Despite rumors to the contrary, I don't think that any coroner's office in the country answers their phone with the saying "You Stab 'em, We Slab 'em" or "You Call, We Haul, That's All!"
Just as good as Quincy on television would have been a Quincy video game.
I mocked up an opening sequence of what Quincy could have looked like on the Commodore 64, the biggest computer of the Quincy era. Paste this title into the bar:
i like it when quincy looks like hes feeling a dead body then it turns out to be a alive woman i wonder if quincy is slightly disapointed seein as necrophillia wasnt illeagle in california yet
i used to watch all of these 70s/80s crime shows on bbc1 when i was skipping school, while reading 70s/80s comics i got off the local market! NOSTALGIAAAAAA
@kyler187 I agree. The older detective shows like Kojak, Quincy, Cannon, etc. are so much better than CSI and its many clones. Television will only get worse.
@RetroJenny Yeah but don't forget MacMillan & Wife, Starsky & Hutch, MacLoed, The Rockford Files, and a host of others that didn't quite measure up, even though they too had fans and were popular.
Even this show turned into a crusade every week after a while. Like when the "murder" was the drug company's refusal to fund orphan-drug research etc.
I agree with you ryoushii. All the shows now are just cheap knock offs of this and all the others from this period. Where these shows relied on the actors to tell the story the shows now rely on slick effects, hot rides and pretty, dysfunctional characters.

But Quincy, Quincy is somthing special. He got all these young women too.... and had his own personal Ninja .... and had great theme music AND had a styling leather jacket for an OAP .... AND ....AND......AND.... Well, he was always repeated on BBC1 during the mid 90's when i was skipping school!.... Quincy M.E- KING OF SHIT TV
Yes, one of my favorites as well. When ever I get to stay home, I try to catch it on T.V. on KDOC here in the Valley in California... my mom use to make me watch it with her when I was a kid : )
Quincy was a great show, and Jack Klugman is one of my favorite actors. This variation of the theme, though, is not my favorite. There is another one with a little more moog sound to it that I'm partial to.

Lynette Mettey was "the girl in the bikini", 'Samual', as she played one of Quincy's girlfriends during the first season..

Something you don't see on TV these days. A powerful seasoned actor with a larger-than-life presence. Jack seemed to give every performance his best.

Quincy was a great show, and Jack Klugman is one of my favorite actors. This variation of the theme, though, is not my favorite. There is another one with a little more moog sound to it that I'm partial to.

This is where CSI stole the idea for the show. Quincy was the first and original. Great show.

I love the way half the cops got sick and the other half passed out on the spot. I always laughed at that part.
