a round to the head would sort that out, alsation problem solved, east kilbride is a dump never mind rabies victims,,junkies are the main agenda for permanent elimanation
This brings back some memories, used to love going on the 10p rides outside boots whilst my mum went into Fine Fare to get my dads tobaco. This was back when The Plaza was the Plaza, a shopping centre in its own right and not just a section of the EK shopping centre now stripped of its own identity
The shopping centre was built in the 70's, and had brown and orange floor tiles. The roof was made up of coloured lights and roof tiles. They finally modernised in 1990!
There are a few pictures on Flickr, if you have a spare hour or two to look for them, including a great shot from (I assume) the Plaza tower of the old cinema car park. If you look closely, you can see the tunnel that chummy runs down in this clip.
I was born in 81, but I remember the rides next to Boots! Can't remember the orange seats though. Never saw those big stone things, they must have came later on. The bit that leads into the arcade looks exactly the same though!
I was actually there when they filmed this. I was 11 years old and I went to the Plaza with my mate. I think it was on a Sunday; it was closed to the public while they were filming. We just walked in and had a wander round the deserted shopping centre before a security guard threw us out!
Nice! Did you stick around to watch the filming? Are you one of the kids hanging over the rail at the old hill? I still remember there being tyre skid marks outside John Menzies for at least a few weeks after this was filmed...
I never knew this clip existed till today. I remember the old centre, it was better back then. The first and only film i saw in the old cinema was he-man (masters of the universe). And the blocks that were in the square that i used to play on, are now at the boating pond.
I remember going to see ET there, and one of the Star Wars movies - it had some dull endless B-movie about fishing and/or rescue boats before it. I gather there was a second screen there too, apparently it was about the size of a big TV, but I only remember the main screen. Glad I could jolt some memories, though! =D
SCREEN 2!!! I remember going to see Jaws 3 and the Golden Child up there. It WAS tiny, a bit like the cinemas you see on MTV Cribs these days. You cant beat Screen 1, saw loads of films in there. Think its Bingo now. I remember the stone things in the middle of the square, many a bruised knee falling off them! didnt know they were down at the boating pond now...
Only 5 of the comments so far have been posted after it appeared. You'll also notice that a lot of the article is rewitten segments from people's comments and the description. I don't think the author ever saw the show, he's got some important details wrong; he seems to think that this was one of three independent 10 minute films, the subject of which was 'rabid dog at the shops' rather than it being a 10 minute segment from an hour long episode of a three part miniseries.
i remember this show , i live in ek , always have , i remember the show was a mini series about rabies , and obviously this part filmed in east kilbirdy, lol....but i am damned if i can remember the name of the show ...any ideas ...peace
I've lived in EK all my 39 years and fondly the centre as seen here. However, This film is nothing but an early example of media scaremongering. Believe it or not, I myself have had rabies many times from the early 80s onwards and have found it no worse than a bad dose of flu with itchiness. Good ol' Kilbyland! From Tich.
You could never make a film like this (In daylight) in the E.K. Centre these days.
When could you see so few cars or people?.
I recognised most of it when you weren't elbow to elbow like now and you didn't see so many obese people which is too common now owing to all the junk food places to eat these days.
im 2 young to remember any of it being only 25 read bout it in the ek news thought id stop by n take a look. looks funny to c the plazza bak then from wot it is now cant even imagine wot it must have been like to have been there thou
no way i remember the wee spaceship kids ride with the star wars tune. and the bright orange plastic seats. amazeing what you forget pity bout the devil dug though eh. is there any more shots of the centre
Thats amazing!! I remember the centre being like that when i was about 7-8ish. check out the guy running down the tunnel towards and entrance, that was the tunnel that led to the stairs to go up to the cinema and there was a chippy just down to the right that everyone went to when they come out their movie.! sorry, just reminiscing!!
Oh yeah! I had forgotten about the chippy being there! Was it Victor's? Wimpy's was there, too. Where McD's is now. I'll bet many a minimum wager suffered indignity and bruised shins dressed up in that hideous Mr Wimpy costume, with EK's junior ned commuity taking turns to kick him...
Yep, it was a victors! I thought the Wimpy was down on the left, where the outdoor shop is now? I still remember Mr.Wimpy getting spun about by everyone that passed by, whatever they paid them it wasnt enough!
its ever changing down there. cant beat the old plaza though. ive searched the internet for old photos of the 80's town centre and cant find any. or any of the old cinema, its like they never existed!
If you go out by the ice rink exit, you'll find the old cinema is still there. It's now a bingo hall, but I remember seeing the original Star Wars there in 1977.
Ive always wondered if that bingo hall looks anything like the old cinema inside. Saw loads of films there, still remember my parents taking me to see return of the jedi, lol !!
Behind those walls, just imagine! A John Menzies packed with 'Star Wars' and He-Man figures! A fully functioning 'Goldbergs'! A City Bakeries! A Fine Fare!
I have all three parts of the series, but it's from the early 90s UK Gold repeats, so I'm not sure what (if anything) is missing that they chopped out for ads.
Like you, I was terrified of it at the time (and subsequently all dogs!) and I started watching it recently expecting to have a good old laugh at how cheezy it was... but it really stands up pretty well to time!
Are there any other specific parts of it you remember that you'd like me to post?
and that was the most exiting thing to ever happen to east kilbride... a dog...

This is a really scary series because it appears more realistic than rubbish films like "Quarantine"

The person who uploaded this do they have the rest of this mini series? If so could they upload it.

I do, but it's three hours long. This is the only section that shows East Kilbride.

Break it up into 10 sections or at least the first episode would be good thanks if you can.

No, I wasn't in it unfortunately! I think the film crew were on their tea break when I wandered through!
My mate reckons this was broadcast around August 83, so it was probably filmed late 82/early 83... later than it states here.
scottm350 3 years ago
No, sir - filmed in 1981. But it may have been repeated in 1983, which might be why your mate remembers it from then.

Some of it hasn't changed a bit!

The big stone things were outside the plaza next to the Mushroom which wasn't shown on film but were put in place in the seventies.

Unfortunately not. That's all there is on the show - but the segment fits handily into You Tube's ten minute time restriction, eh?
