its a gpu problem, i cut out a small piece of aluminium shim and placed it ontop of the RSX gpu, everythings fine now. You need something to apply pressure on the gpu since the solder joints have probably broken.

I just started getting this same problem last week. Ever since I left the system on overnight for a GT5 endurance race -froze at 5 hrs into a 9hr race but music still was playing!. I'm not getting the YLOD but I still think its a heat-related issue, due to the fact that the longer I shut my system off, the longer it takes to freeze up when turned back on. Tried swapping hard drives, reset all defaults via the troubleshoot startup menu, disassembled, cleaned, reapplied heatsink... same problem...

whenever i have my internet cable unplugged and turn on my ps3, my games work fine they load and don't freeze. i found out what it was, it was the RSX chip starting to come loose from the motherboard.
this is what i did, i left the bottom metal shielding attached to the motherboard but i left off the top metal shielding, connected power supply only, then i put pressure on the RSX chip using painters tape around the head of a screwdriver.
i also had to make the original fan blow air on the CPU & GPU so they didn`t overheat. after doing this, it didn`t freeze until i released the pressure off the chip.

@jeffmtnman Your console probably needs to be cleaned. Sony recommends cleaning your console once a week. The fact is intercoolers greatly increase the life of the console, it definitely wouldn't be a bad thing. My PS3 always use to blow hot air out the back and the side, now with the intercooler, the air is cold, and more air is being forced out of the console. Sorry about your console freezing, the intercooler will keep it from getting too hot where it freezes if thats the problem.

@Videogamearcade nope, I had to send it back to Sony. If you ever have to send yours back, know that you won't get your PS3 back. They sent me some beat up refurbished one that was in terrible condition. It worked though...but they didn't transfer any of my data over so I lost everything.
UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE!!! Firmware 2.xx has issues that bricks ps3's. You should upgrade to firmware 3.xx (as of now, 3.53 is available). Don't worry about paying... firmware download is free at playstation(dot)com

Has anyone tried cleaning their PS3 internally to remove any dust or tried replacing their HDMI cable? These are the two things that came to mind because the same issue is happening to me. It has happened while watching DVD/Bluray and streaming video from the internet.

It was just the hard drive.. It was slightly jarred from place enuff where I'd get a connection for a bit then screw up, try dat out
This happens to me constantly in the XMB wether I just turn it on after a day of sitting or am playing for 6 hours straight. The best thing I could find is that the hard drive is corrupted but it typically doesn't have a problem playing any games (with the recent exception of NBA 2k11 freezing when it says "Checking HDD" and just sits there). Anyone have a simple answer on how to uncorrupt it without sending it in for service?
Ps3s only freeze because the air vents get blocked with dust. sony say use a hover to suck the dust out. mine had a freezing problem and it honestly does work like it did when it was new. and in the video above his is broken and that is caused by to many ilegal downloads and a full hard disk drive u should leave at least 5gb free space for the system to function. and the slimline ps3 is more prone to freezing i suggest u buy a add on fan. for more info on ps3 visit my channel.
Mine did that,then it stooped after some updates about one or more years into it. Now it has started again after the last 2 or 3 updates. PS3 60Gig, from when they first came out. But as Leeroy Jenkins would say in wow, at least I have chicken.

@BodyPopper92 i got my brothers ps3 to compare what might have went wrong... both fans sound like they were running but when I put my hand to the back of his it felt cool when I put my hand to the back of mine it was hot as desert sand... I think they are overheating put yours on and let it run for a while like 5 to ten minutes and see if it is blowing out hot air i mean fell like a hair dryer hot and let me know cause if it is obviously resetting the system wont do anythiong for it overheating

My ps3 freezed yesterday, for the 4th god damn time! I don't think this is normal! At the first time I thought it was overheated (I do sit in a non-ventilated area, my livingroom, where it's kinda hot, opening a window a little will usually make it alot cooler). But anyway, this is surely not the problem now.. I have had it for a year or so, don't think I can return it and get a new one :( But I still have not played much on it, and sometimes I clean it from dust.. what could it be? :(

dude mines is waaaay worse the icons get really messed up they look like they got twice as thin and have the rest of the icon faded, and if the ps3 gets hot or just turns on from freezing the background goes pink! from there it will freeze within a minute

Send it to sony repair center, unless you are confident enough to do it your self, check the side of PS3 where the exhaust fans are if there is dust in them thats your problem, PS3's have technology in then to tell them to stop or low down if there cooler starts to fail beleive me I do casual work at a Sony rapair center and that if the main problem when PS3's freeze or get the Red light Of Death.

I see that you have ALOT of demos and other data in the ps3...another cause of the freezing is unused data taking up space which slows the ps3 down (it happened to me also just in case)
i suggest you move your ps3 to a place where its better ventilated. it could build up heat quicker from where you put yours. 2nd, im not too sure if the freezing thing is too big of a deal. doesnt say too much in the manual. mine does that too and i have a slim! all you have to do is just hold the power button for more than 15 sec for it to shut down automatically to got o standby. once in SB, turn it on again. how to prevent freezing? dont have one. its normal, everybody gets it.
@ultvegeta No, the freezing in this video is not normal and not everyone gets it. Sure, a system may freeze from time to time, but if it does it constantly and within a minute of powering on, something is definitely wrong. I've had a slim now since it came out and it hasn't froze yet.
@arcticblue2 Well thats good to know. I've been having some probs and I think I'm gonna go ahead and buy a Slim. By the way if you ever have any currupt data that you cannot delete manually, go to the recovery menu, and select i think its the restore file data. Then once thats done try deleting it again and it should work, it did for me. I know u have a new ps3 now, just a heads up

@ultvegeta well my cousin have placed his ps3 in such a cluttered space you wouldn't even want to know. and it is still working fine so overheating pretty much isn't a problem unless you are that uber avid gamer that has it on for 48 hours straight

Old ps3 fats will out last the slims, its just another case of sony trying to make their product cheaper. The old ones were built with better high end parts, including fans.
@Crease3k look up videos of ps3 slim problems and ps3 fat problems, and remember that ps3 fat has been out since the beginning, and ps3 slim just got released late last year. more people have problems with the slim, and its alot newer.
also since you have the fat, never run it vertically, always horizontal, this will increase the life of the ps3, cd roms/blu ray readers/dvd readers/etc dont like to be run vertically, and neither do hardrives in most cases.

this is usually due to the PS3 fan not operating properly and usually as result overheats the motherboard inside, try getting an add on fan from amazon or something for about £14 this should add additional cooling power to the PS3 and may be able to resolve the issue hopefully.
My PS3 slim has froze only a couple times like when i'm playing online games I think it's just an overheating thing because like it only freezes when i'm on my s3 slim for a really long time. But it hasn't done it for a while so I tink i'm good. :]

best thing 2 do is run a full format...it takes 4hrs 30min so find something to do...and read what it says first...u will want to follow the instructions...sadly most of ur games will have to b completely redone...some reason idk y Resistance 2 is fine but all others won't b....

Ps3s only freeze because the air vents get blocked with dust. sony say use a hover to suck the dust out. mine had a freezing problem and it honestly does work like it did when it was new. and in the video above his is broken and that is caused by to many ilegal downloads and a full hard disk drive u should leave at least 5gb free space for the system to function. and the slimline ps3 is more prone to freezing i suggest u buy a add on fan. for more info on ps3 visit my channel.

Mine did that,then it stooped after some updates about one or more years into it. Now it has started again after the last 2 or 3 updates. PS3 60Gig, from when they first came out. But as Leeroy Jenkins would say in wow, at least I have chicken.

Did you ever get urz fixed because mine freezes so bad that the screen doesn't even show sometimes when I do turn it on. Its like my hdmi doesn't read the playstation or vice verca. It'll work for 20 seconds then freeze. After I turn it off and then on, it wont show anything, nor will it read my controllers, but it'll turn on and everything. So you think you mite know what this is?????

My ps3 just froze yesterday and iv got exactly this problem but worse! instead of those blobs iv got like stripes and all different sorts of patterns lol. i havnt tried reseting it yet though so ill see if that works.

@clascickles No man. i called sony and they told me to reset everything but that makes u lose all ur data and its like buying a new ps3. i didnt want 2 do that at 1st but when i realised theres no way 2 back my stuff up, i went for it. After that it still didnt work and it got even worse. so im gonna have 2 call them back and get it replaced

@BodyPopper92 i got my brothers ps3 to compare what might have went wrong... both fans sound like they were running but when I put my hand to the back of his it felt cool when I put my hand to the back of mine it was hot as desert sand... I think they are overheating put yours on and let it run for a while like 5 to ten minutes and see if it is blowing out hot air i mean fell like a hair dryer hot and let me know cause if it is obviously resetting the system wont do anythiong for it overheating

My ps3 freezed yesterday, for the 4th god damn time! I don't think this is normal! At the first time I thought it was overheated (I do sit in a non-ventilated area, my livingroom, where it's kinda hot, opening a window a little will usually make it alot cooler). But anyway, this is surely not the problem now.. I have had it for a year or so, don't think I can return it and get a new one :( But I still have not played much on it, and sometimes I clean it from dust.. what could it be? :(

dude mines is waaaay worse the icons get really messed up they look like they got twice as thin and have the rest of the icon faded, and if the ps3 gets hot or just turns on from freezing the background goes pink! from there it will freeze within a minute

@joerocksyourworld My ps3 freezes most when trying to message on PSN and while using the Web browser. have the newest firmware and its a Phat (fat) ps3 40 gb. I hate the freezing problem. I dont know whats wrong with it. Also it freezes when going to account management too. But it hasnt froze in a while yet.

@couponer740 yeah but the thing is that microsoft had so many problems they had to go to a 3 year warranty. from a guy that had a psx and a ps2 and never had any problems with either i bought my ps3 thinking i wouldnt have problems with this and now my ps3 freezes every time i press the ps button while in game lol just broke my controller out of rage from such a happening. its very frustrating

Send it to sony repair center, unless you are confident enough to do it your self, check the side of PS3 where the exhaust fans are if there is dust in them thats your problem, PS3's have technology in then to tell them to stop or low down if there cooler starts to fail beleive me I do casual work at a Sony rapair center and that if the main problem when PS3's freeze or get the Red light Of Death.

I see that you have ALOT of demos and other data in the ps3...another cause of the freezing is unused data taking up space which slows the ps3 down (it happened to me also just in case)

i suggest you move your ps3 to a place where its better ventilated. it could build up heat quicker from where you put yours. 2nd, im not too sure if the freezing thing is too big of a deal. doesnt say too much in the manual. mine does that too and i have a slim! all you have to do is just hold the power button for more than 15 sec for it to shut down automatically to got o standby. once in SB, turn it on again. how to prevent freezing? dont have one. its normal, everybody gets it.

@ultvegeta No, the freezing in this video is not normal and not everyone gets it. Sure, a system may freeze from time to time, but if it does it constantly and within a minute of powering on, something is definitely wrong. I've had a slim now since it came out and it hasn't froze yet.

@arcticblue2 Well thats good to know. I've been having some probs and I think I'm gonna go ahead and buy a Slim. By the way if you ever have any currupt data that you cannot delete manually, go to the recovery menu, and select i think its the restore file data. Then once thats done try deleting it again and it should work, it did for me. I know u have a new ps3 now, just a heads up

Black ops had crashed on me, Uncharted 2 GOTY crashed this is fucking bullshit. Why are there so many problems but so few answers. And no it is not because of ventilation!!!!!!! Now my PS3 Slim 120 just seems to get worse.

@ultvegeta well my cousin have placed his ps3 in such a cluttered space you wouldn't even want to know. and it is still working fine so overheating pretty much isn't a problem unless you are that uber avid gamer that has it on for 48 hours straight

Old ps3 fats will out last the slims, its just another case of sony trying to make their product cheaper. The old ones were built with better high end parts, including fans.

@Crease3k look up videos of ps3 slim problems and ps3 fat problems, and remember that ps3 fat has been out since the beginning, and ps3 slim just got released late last year. more people have problems with the slim, and its alot newer.
also since you have the fat, never run it vertically, always horizontal, this will increase the life of the ps3, cd roms/blu ray readers/dvd readers/etc dont like to be run vertically, and neither do hardrives in most cases.

this is usually due to the PS3 fan not operating properly and usually as result overheats the motherboard inside, try getting an add on fan from amazon or something for about £14 this should add additional cooling power to the PS3 and may be able to resolve the issue hopefully.

My PS3 slim has froze only a couple times like when i'm playing online games I think it's just an overheating thing because like it only freezes when i'm on my s3 slim for a really long time. But it hasn't done it for a while so I tink i'm good. :]

Today is the first time my ps3 slim froze. I was playing Modern Warfare 2 and it froze during the lobby. It also froze when I pressed the nultiplayer button.

@SammieGreig yeah the ps3 can't handle too much reading since the blu ray discs are suppose to have slow readings and mw2 not only increases the disc's speed but requires too much reading which the ps3 won't be able to handle

best thing 2 do is run a full format...it takes 4hrs 30min so find something to do...and read what it says first...u will want to follow the instructions...sadly most of ur games will have to b completely redone...some reason idk y Resistance 2 is fine but all others won't b....
