Does anybody know the actual time signature(s) of this song? Been curious trying to figure it out for years but I keep second-guessing myself every time I listen again.
BTA and Hella both rock, if you think differently I'd like to see a post of you playing either of their songs. other than that I'm proud to take my head out of my ass and listen to this good music.
Hella is one of a few bands that can actually pull this shit off and sound GOOD. IT's a super progressive band, but it's not all complete noise, and it's great dynamics. Go listen to behold the arctopus if you wanna see a FAIL. Hella's sick.
@4stringmotherfucker Behold the arctopus a fail? You dont know music.. I think theyre better than this band and more talented, but its all someones personal opinion.
@BlokMonster no. behold the arctopus can't even touch hella...sorry just the facts. they are very talented don't get me wrong but not even remotely close to zach and spencer. not that it is in anyway possible to not "know music" but if it somehow is you clearly don't.
@DrawOutTheLions Maybe Behold the Arctopus "can't even touch hella" 'cos their drummer is pretty shit and the guitarist is only mediocre but the bassist, Colin Marston, is certainly on par with Hella.
BtA are more complicated whereas Hella are more enjoyable
@LynkxMan actually BTA has no bassist at all. they have a "warr guitarist" also to say that BTA is more complicated is absolutely an opinion. the styles of writing these 2 bands use are completely different. BTA write down all of their music where as hella more often then not is almost a jam band....a style of music making MUCH harder then simply writing down parts. not to say that BTA sucks in any way shape or form they just often seem like technicality for the sake of being technical.
@DrawOutTheLions Yeah I get what you mean... and yeah it is hard to write music when you can't actually write it down haha. They do seem a bit technical for the sake of being technical but that doesn't mean I still don't listen to them... some of their stuff is pretty catchy, strangely.
Let's just say they're both great bands and a serious escape from the mindless mainstream
I don't really think Hella and Tera Melos are all that similar. Both follow a strange pop formula that seems to hook people, but they have different things going on with their instruments. Hella is more drum focused. They remind me if you took a fax machine when its running and slowed it down X100 and listened to it. That's pretty cool. Tera Melos is a little bit more linear. Still equally awesome.
I first came across this track/video in 2003/4 and became addicted. Then it escaped me for some reason and I JUST came across it about a week ago and fell in love all over again.
No joke, I've listened to it (and Biblical Violence) at least 4-5 times a day since!
This is way different, these two are so extremely talented, it blows most other math rock out of the water, including tera melos (although it is a good rec). Even as a 5 piece Hella stands out from most, if not all, math rock.
I think I see a lot of similarities, but yeah, they're definitely their own bands. I'd for sure recommend fans of one band to hear the other, since they've both got all the crazy time signatures, sporadic mood changes, and gnarly shreddage.

That little drum solo Zach throws in at the beginning reminds me of some horrible, gigantic steam powered automaton coming to end the world.
