Has anyone actually used this mask? I don't mean wear while watching this video, but actually wore and tested for any length of time exposed to any chemical agents? House smoke? Please don't answer if you don't have first-hand experience.
Cool video, I am looking at getting one of these, but, I don't know how well it would be to shoot a rifle with this mask cause the can is down and in front? I was really hoping you would demonstrate aiming a rifle with it on, but that's cool.

The folks that sell brand new ones for nearly $200 say that the surplus masks are no good because they are too old. Sounds like they are full of it, and just trying to sell their more expensive masks. New filters are a definite must, though.
@91364Steve Just so you know, gas masks (the actual mask, not the filter) start to break down after about 20 years or so. The rubber doesn't retain all of its original properties and can't be guaranteed to last through many types of attacks. On top of this, the gas masks that sit in surplus for over 20 years tend to be the ones that had some sort of malfunction... the most common being a dysfunctional voice box. The military gets the best, and the surplus gets sold to help with costs.

@bladeimm I bought my Israeli m15 and the canteen which fits the drinking system from "Emergency preparedness" on Amazon for around $40. I received a 2003 filter and a 1995 mask. I can't GUARANTEE that you'll get the same... but ask them to pack a mask with a two digit number stamped onto your mask that is anywhere from 00 to 10 OR 93 to 99. If they can't do that for you, don't buy from them. I have no idea what they have in stock, but EVERYTHING they sent to me was good on dates.
I know because I was trained with an M40 gas mask in the Marines in a gas chamber filled with tear gas and that's the way they teach you how to properly clear it before you start breathing. Otherwise you'll be in a world of hurt.
Nice review. You have to clear out your gas mask before you start breathing or the first breath you take will be the contaminated air trapped inside the mask when you put it on. There should be a valve you press then blow hard to expel the contaminated air before you start breathing. If there's no vavle then plug filter with palm and burp the mask before tightening then take a breath.
How can I go about hollowing out the filter for this? I recently got one to use in a Halloween costume and just for show, but I want to easily breath through the filter.

@gOrYrOcKs There are special canteens for masks such as these. They cost about $12. They allow the drinking function to be used and still provide protection. I would use surplus masks for nothing more than teargas, your moron friend spraying something in your eyes, or costumes.
Don't count on any SURPLUS gas masks or filters, they're worthless if the situation becomes critical. You must purchase a newly manufactured mask and filter. All the surplus out there is garbage.

I just bought this mask a few days ago. It is a fantastic gas mask that fits perfectley and doesnt slip or come loose at any time while you wear it. I would recommend this over other gas masks with side filters because it's very comfortable.

@X6iiMpact6X Most military gas masks that have an easily removable filter are indeed mounted on the left, because most people are or at least taught toshoot rifles right handed and it would therefore not interfere with the aiming or functioning of the weapon BUT if you are left handed or like me right handed but shoot rifles left handed, the "standard" left hand mounted filter creates a major headache. Center mount makes it easier for both shooters and easier to remove and replace the filter.
I wonder why the Izzys have their mask with the filter in front, when just about all other military masks have their filters to the side or built in so it wouldn't get in the way.

You got ripped off big time bro. Face the mask towards you and hold it up to the light. Then look at the nozzle above the filter. You'll notice that there are holes. I found a way to patch mine up. But once you patch up the nozzle, it should be fully functional.
There is a vital flaw in the way he puts the mask on. While putting the mask on you need to be holding your breath. once on and tightened down to your face and your still holding your breath you cover both inhale and exhale ports of the mask and exhale for roughly 5-10 seconds blowing all contaminated air that you trapped in it out the sides of the mask. then still with the ports covered you inhale sucking the mask quickly back to your face and creating a perfect seal every time.

@aryola If it's cheap, then it's likely surplus or has been sitting in a warehouse for 20+ years. Surplus and used doesn't mean it's automatically ineffective, just that could be unreliable--defective, have degraded and won't protect, been recalled, outdated, discontinued, etc.
Prices can be jacked up based on panic or profiteering. A new mask providing the highest protection, and/or one that is military grade (just cause it's military and current issue) will naturally be more expensive.
They're not gonna sell you poison. That would be murder. And you could sue for a lot. Every filter they sell is good. It won't kill you. But may not work that well. No gas masks don't kill you after they expire. There is nothing poisonous in them. Unless you get an asbestos one
military canteens you do not have to open the top. If you did that in the field you would contaminate the water with whatever is in the air. The military canteens have a little cover where the tube hooks up to the cap/lid.
@okdigger1 if it is newly made then yes otherwise no the expiration date on these things is usually around 10 years it depends on the type of filter and how good it is if u breath through an expired filter, the things protecting u become seperated and they become harmful or deadly so always check the expiration date

@DjFaqq101 drip some soap down the tube with the two clamps pinched, wait like 45 seconds or until the soap starts to drip out the bottom or until you think its near the end. then run a fine stream of water down the tube for a long time so no soap is left, next drink clean water threw the tube to clean it out, but don't swallow the water just spit it out into the sink

old already opened filters are better than nothing at all. i mean if it came down to it and i'm faced with nothing at all vs. a mask and a filter that has been opened once or twice,but has never been in any chemicals only in clean air that was opened years ago,i would pick the mask and old filter over nothing at all.

but to your question ive found that YES they can easily fog up but found the trick is to never breath out of your nose and if u can try to breath in your nose, then open your mouth to breath out and you wil find all the warm/moist air will escape from the bottom while the new air that comes in from breathing in your nose keeps the mask fairly ventilated..
fuck this... i live in occupied phalastine and before 7 years israel gave all the civilians gas masks kit (it comes with a medicine in case of someone get exposed to chemical)

dude i have a two RARE WW2 gas mask's, ones a MED/ADULT size one and the other ones a CHILD size, its nickname is (the mikey mouse gas mask) and both have acctualy been used to protect the person in gas, now if you have one, consider yourself lucky to SEE one none the less OWN one

Modern and un-opened should be fine, though. Anything older than the 80's I wouldn't touch.
Also, a filter is good for about 3 years when opened.

@LegitimentNoob first the only way you can polute a filter is by NBC or any thing that will react the chemical in the charcol in the filter. and no it wont hurt you if its expired. well if it was used in the war your trouble.

guys if your wundering if you want to buy it.... buy it it is a really good quality gasmask. the good things about it is first it has a voicebox and then it has a drinking straw and its tuffnes is wunderful. i got mine for only 30 bugs with two nbc filters a drinking straw and the gasmask. ill give it a 5 star. plus my gas mask fits all size

Actually, your wrong. This one in the video was baought for about 15 bux. So the difference between this one and the ones that run $500 would be $475 do be exact (without the shipping and any taxes paid).

@aryola If it's cheap, then it's likely surplus or has been sitting in a warehouse for 20+ years. Surplus and used doesn't mean it's automatically ineffective, just that could be unreliable--defective, have degraded and won't protect, been recalled, outdated, discontinued, etc.
Prices can be jacked up based on panic or profiteering. A new mask providing the highest protection, and/or one that is military grade (just cause it's military and current issue) will naturally be more expensive.

They're not gonna sell you poison. That would be murder. And you could sue for a lot. Every filter they sell is good. It won't kill you. But may not work that well. No gas masks don't kill you after they expire. There is nothing poisonous in them. Unless you get an asbestos one

military canteens you do not have to open the top. If you did that in the field you would contaminate the water with whatever is in the air. The military canteens have a little cover where the tube hooks up to the cap/lid.

@okdigger1 if it is newly made then yes otherwise no the expiration date on these things is usually around 10 years it depends on the type of filter and how good it is if u breath through an expired filter, the things protecting u become seperated and they become harmful or deadly so always check the expiration date

@DjFaqq101 drip some soap down the tube with the two clamps pinched, wait like 45 seconds or until the soap starts to drip out the bottom or until you think its near the end. then run a fine stream of water down the tube for a long time so no soap is left, next drink clean water threw the tube to clean it out, but don't swallow the water just spit it out into the sink

old already opened filters are better than nothing at all. i mean if it came down to it and i'm faced with nothing at all vs. a mask and a filter that has been opened once or twice,but has never been in any chemicals only in clean air that was opened years ago,i would pick the mask and old filter over nothing at all.

To tell the truth I AM WEARING ONE RIGHT NOW :D:D:D LOL
but to your question ive found that YES they can easily fog up but found the trick is to never breath out of your nose and if u can try to breath in your nose, then open your mouth to breath out and you wil find all the warm/moist air will escape from the bottom while the new air that comes in from breathing in your nose keeps the mask fairly ventilated..
Try that hope it helps.

fuck this... i live in occupied phalastine and before 7 years israel gave all the civilians gas masks kit (it comes with a medicine in case of someone get exposed to chemical)

@TeXaSPacMan214 cause he opened that filter,when it should have been left alone until needed. but opened ones are better than nothing as long as they haven't been exposed to chemicals. if you open one in your room,then that filter is better than nothing,but the best kind of filters are the ones that are not opened,and still have their seal.

dude i have a two RARE WW2 gas mask's, ones a MED/ADULT size one and the other ones a CHILD size, its nickname is (the mikey mouse gas mask) and both have acctualy been used to protect the person in gas, now if you have one, consider yourself lucky to SEE one none the less OWN one
