I'm American and Tommy Cooper is the funniest comedian I've ever seen. I'm sick of all these people on YouTube finding it necessary to "explain" Tommy's comedy. If you get it, you get it. If you don't, there's no reason to explain it because you probably won't find it funny. Rest in peace, Tommy. We all miss you.
@Gruntol5 Funny you should say that as i do see a Psychiatrist but doest agree with you he thinks im quite amusing......Have a great day my friend :) Much love.
@Gruntol5 Well going to School for five more years is more than Tommy can do the dead fuck! I have tried to be pleasent with you and you have been nothing but rude. And whilst were at it go on a journey somewhere and die in a fucking car fire.
So much of the BBC interviews were done real drunk...Parkinson's had a few here, Big Tommy (R.I.P.) loved his booze...Roger Mellie...the list goes on...
Have to disagree with the comment that Tommy Cooper was probably one of the greatest comics.. he just was THE FUNNIEST man who ever lived!! Used to come to Skeggy, my home town by the sea, and I remember he once popped in to our local, full of skinheads and punks.. and naturally just made us all laugh till we cried... there has been some great funny-men but he was THE MAN!!!
Cor blimey! I've never seen Parky laugh so much in me life. Tommy seemed uncomfortable, he cannot carry an interview the way other British comics did like Howerd and Williams.
@RichardElden He was showing all signs of feeling extremely nervous and uncomfortable in this video. That's why he's dodging the questions and trying to make jokes, he's petrified of being put on the spot about anything other than basically doing his job, taking the attention away from HIM and more to making people laugh. The sad thing is, most comedians like Tommy are suffering with severe depression and anxieties, did you realise that? Calling him names like you have is repulsive!
I really dont think Tommy would of made it so Big these days with this sort of act.....I still cant watch him dying on stage without a chill running down my spine.
Controlled chaos, beautifully choreographed clumsiness, magic tricks that fail brilliantly, terrible jokes told in such a way that they're so funny it hurts... He's the only comedian I know who can make me cry with laughter just the way he walks on stage.
Tommy cooper used the same routine on his live shows for decades, once he had something that worked he did it week in week out, month in month out, year after year.
You could see tommy live once and that was all he was
i can c his shows on youtube over and over and it stays funny , been a huge fan of him even when he was still under us , its just the way he looks , and how he laughs at his own jokes , brilliant
@1johncain Quick question: You ever heard of slapstick comedy? You ever watched Charlie Chaplin? He could walk into a wall and the entire cinema would howl with laughter. Tommy Cooper is the modern day version. Not everything has to be an in depth commentary on society. He's loved by millions, & will be loved by millions more. How many love your stand up? Upload a video of you & lets see if you can do any better. Oh & did you know that most current comedians will reference Tommy as an influnce?
@1johncain You're probably a Dane Cook fan. It's not just a "sentimental attachment". He was, & remains, a comic genius. As you can see from the interview, he had the presenter in stiches as well as the audience. The British public doesn't tend to laugh unless it's actually funny. If we don't like it, we heckle and there is a wall of silence. This man could bring an audience to it's knees with laughter time and time again. He is a comedy legend. You don't get any better then him.
Only Tommy could come to an interview, use it as another performance and the audience not mind a jot. My love of comedy started with you Mr Cooper and long may your legacy remain. RIP you genius
Tommy Cooper was wonderful, to say that he and Franky Howard were just as funny is not fair to Tommy , he was the BEST and Franky , just GOOD. If you can read this (where ever you are ) Tommy, thanks for all the great laughts you give me.
This interview has got a touch of the Kaufmans about it. Its like the guy doesnt want you to have any insight to his personality...yet he's intent on making the interviewer uncomfortable
I'm an Australian and find him hilarious. He's funnier doing his bad magician's act of course. As for the drunkenness, he pretending. He did like a drop but didn't perform hammered (like Dean Martin, who had tea in his scotch glass). MrGeorgeyS says it well: Cooper choreographed everything, and it's made to look bad.
I can imagine those short clips at the beginning wouldn't be funny to anyone who didn't know these comedians and their acts. We don't have to be condescending about it, though, do we????
To all americans and any one who doesn't get it. You have to understand Tommy cooper is probably one of the greatest comics ever to walk the earth. He knows his jokes are bad, and so does te audience. Its just his ability to make the delivery of the joke so funny by a hand action, or a movement or a stutter. He knew exactly what bit of chaos was going to come next, thoroughly rehearsed but seemlessly delivered. Genius.
I think he was drunk here. In the unedited version of this interview he screams at the audience "and you can all fuck yourselves!!!" and "fuck me, I said FUCK ME, you bitches!!!" before straightening up, smiling and carrying on.
To the person who lived with him, to the person who knew him 20 hrs out of a 24hr day, to the person who heard his side of the story from within away from the media and spotlight, to the person who listened to a man opening his heart, to that one person I will listen and learn from, the rest you who make negative comments regarding his private life, close the door on the way out.
Tommy's personal life has nothing to do with him as a performer, as a standup he truly was one of the best of all time in British history! Yes he had faults in his personal life but anyone who says a bad word against him..what makes you think you are so perfect? He never claimed to be a saint, i remember him as an unbelievably talented comedian and i am proud to share the same 1st name as him!
The reaction he gets out of Parkinson beginning at 5:02 was typical of the effect he had on people. He was a born natural clown and the world is a sadder place without him.
My nan and my dad loved Tommy Cooper and I do also. Nice to see he can still fill all generations and make them laugh. shame he is gone, he still had so much more to give, he was very clever and witty and no comedian today seems to have that onstage pressence Cooper had
At 27 with me saying that just seems weird but its true :)

Yes, he was some kind of genius, born to bring laughter into our lives. I wish someone could put up the interview with Les Dawson in which Parky was speechless with laughter. Brilliant, both of them.
Comment three is a disgrace, obviously no nothing about comedy, he liked a drink, so bloody what? He was hysterical, just looking at him makes you laugh.

Amazing how Parky can sit there praising Cooper. When in 1979 the alcoholic Cooper almost guillotined Parky's head, if not for an alert technician.
