  • Stopping and feathering 1 or 2 engines late in the mission was typical.

With a full bomb and fuel load the aircraft weighed a bit and needed all ten engines going to climb to 40,000' +.

But when 60% of the fuel was consumed and the bomb load was gone the B 36 could fly fine on just 4 of the R-4360 piston engines.

  • @agwhitaker Also B36 could fly with full bomb load and fuel on 6 pitson engines, but to climb on high alt it needed jet engines included in later versions.

  • they flew missions sometimes with both inboard engines feathered to reduce buffeting on fuselage.

  • One big mutha!

  • An engine is out!

Oh who cares, we have 9 left.

  • That must have been an awesome noise.

  • No, it was number 5. Apparently, the Air Force felt that I you blew one motor on this bomber, if it was a training exercise, then you could continue the exercise without declaring an emergency.

  • nr 3 engine is feathered

  • that had to be good for the canister
