@Kyogrerok And yet she stopped him... So now we have two mentally ill teenagers who possibly hate each other as the last humans alive. Such a depressing end... but then, if it wasn't depressing, it wouldn't bee Evangelion.
Shinji renounced the world where all hearts had melted into one and accepted each other unconditionally. His desire... to live with 'others' -- other hearts that would sometimes reject him, even deny him. @Zero4ph Yes, but by trying to kill her? To put an end to that "other" existence, as you put it, seems a bit off with what you stated. Granted, he and Asuka didn't part on the best of terms pre-Third Impact, but even so...
I think Shinji apparently been alone for some time before Asuka's return, and was nearly insane from isolation, so he wasn't sure if he wanted to live anymore. When he saw Asuka he wanted to kill her because he was afraid she'd reject him again With her caress, he realizes she doesn't hate him and that she won't just reject him, and he is brought back to sanity. ~~
@Zero4ph Hmm... I think the original line in Japanese translates to either "...you make me sick..." or "...I feel sick..." but you're right with the open interpretive nature. I wonder if Gendo and Misato and the others who were injured/killed before the 3rd Impact would be alive after being reduced to LCL and reformed.
There's no really explaination about the bandages it was there already in time of her return to signify that she really got injured during her fight against the Eva series also about the clothes well she was turned into a LCL in her plug suit just like Shinji in his street clothes so I guess if they have to be reborn in their clothes as well, (1/2)
yes "I feel Sick" as in morning sickness, well Asuka died too she is included during instrumentality so I guess Gendo,Ritsuko and Misato as well. (2/2) ~~
@Zero4ph When Shinji was LCL'd during Unit-01's fight with Zuriel, he was reborn naked (at least he was in the manga), so Asuka would've had to find clothes if she was in the same situation, as judging by this Shinji isn't in a helping mood. I have never felt so conflicted about an end of a series in my life. The confusion about the symbolism, then watching it a second time to catch everything. Then realizing what Asuka meant by "I feel sick". On one hand I liked the ending movie, but I wasn't too sure of the result.
@Cosplaychick The first time you saw Shinji strangling Asuka was when instrumentality had begun, and Instrumentality makes you see things that are not there, it seems, sort of akin to a dream sequence. The scene with Shinji and Asuka in the kitchen where Shinji overturns the table and strangles Asuka was not real. This however is, because it occurres after Shinji rejectes instrumentality and returns to the real world, a world where he and Asuka both possess separate forms, minds and feelings.
Shinji choking Asuka in the perverse hope that she would do something to let him know that it was not the fake world that he imagined earlier. And do something, she did. Asuka did not just stay limp like she did in his mind, but rather she caressed his cheek gently.
i've seen in Japaneses TV show before that woman that was voice-acting as Asuka was guest.
and she said in the show she was asked by Anno( directer) when creating film " how do you feel some guy was masturbating beside of your bed while you are sleeping?" and she answered to Anno "thats how disgusting" and Anno said " thats exactly what i thought "...
so in this movie " how disgusting " is an answer about what Shinji did in the very beginning of this film.. i know its still complicated though
@maxisssty that actually makes a lot of sense. i for one always thought that for a little while there instrumentality was nearly achieved and everyone was becoming a single all encompassing entity inside of the massive rei/lilith angel, and shinji's will alone while his consciousness was becoming a part of the whole stopped the process. i've always thought that asuka had come out of that event knowing exactly what shinji did as she was already a part of the whole and saw what he did.
@Giroutte I don´t think this ending was intended to be understood but was made deliberately ambiguous (the Japanese excel at that) in order to allow the fans to make their own interpretations, the alternative ending transmitted on the USA TV sucks ass and I prefer to think it was a practical joke of the producers, I forgive them anyway since for me Evangelion is so far the best anime I had ever seen, a real art masterpiece, maybe Death Note comes close but Evangelion rules
was there any reason why they had to cast someone who sounds like a young woody allen / kermit the frog for the voice of shinji? Kinda kills the dialogue.
Shinji Ikari was voted as the 25th most popular anime character of all time (though Rei was ranked 10th). But let me ask you guys. DO YOU WANT A REPEAT OF THIS...?
I saw both the new movies and I think one "End of Evangelion" is enough. Why make a second?
it means we humans should always choose reality over fantasy and oh trying to give some personal answers some pointless questions like "Where do we come from?" or "Are we real?"
@IISgGuitaristII I think the whole idea is that people feel bad because we have separate consciousnesses which causes misunderstandings and such. The angels were trying to unite all of them together to end the pain, which is why the are called angels, I guess. But Shinji decided to live as an individual despite the pain. That's why people were congratulating him. It's kinda the whole coming-of-age thing, but even in adulthood, one might ask the question "Is it really worth it?"
Also " how disgusting' could refere back to the previous episode on when she was in a coma, shinji mastrubate - then he said im fucked up , this could dipicted as human actions can be truly weak ,where it causes torment , shame or disgust upon him/herself or others thus questioning whether Instrumentalilty is the key to peace as a collective entity rather than individual. As Shinji gave up that" solution' & trying to kill asuka she believe him acting " the weak / revolting side of humanity
Yep i agree with the zero4ph (the top comments) i believe Shinji did reject Instrumentality-
The theory behind asuka's "How disgusting" is vague since some people believe( wiki it) that the translation between the japanese and eng version could be 1 ( Asuska's eng voice artist mentions".1.Asuka feels sick- morning sickness? , this could well reflect on the adam and eve theme . 2.Asuka is disgusted by Shinji's actions or his cowardice .
My impression is that she woke up right after the scene from the beginning in the hospital bed, and had no knowledge of everything that had transpired since the beginning of the movie. Her statement is a long delayed reaction to Shinji's first action in the movie.
She already knew even before the final scene its during pre-instrumentality "Personal Hell train car scene" but technically that didn't really happen it was all part of Shinji's mind. ;)
Can't say for certain, because the rebuild is only half finished. However from what I have seen so far, even though the rebuild has better animation, the slow pace of the TV series is alot more suited to these characters and their development, In My Humble Opinion.
i aggree with the two top thumbed comments based on what i've seen within the show He seems like any old insecure 14 year old boy who's father just happened to be createing the Eva's and had him pilot it under a false lie that his father wanted to see him, and through this experience he has met many friends and enemies and has felt what is to be true love and true sadness, true pain, true fear, true hate. all these emotions and more are too much for a boy his age. in my opinion he grew uptoquick
You really have to admire all these commentators who are referring to Shinji as an "emo fag" and whatnot. I'm sure if any of these people we're fourteen years old, living in a world that had been nearly destroyed, and were saddled with the responsibility of saving what was left, they would have responded with far greater courage and resilience, right?
People looking into this way too much. Blatantly the guy just likes strangling people. And lets face it, aint no one there to stop him... Just for the kicks.

Also, Asuka could be saying disgusting, because Shinji had started strangling her in the anime, I believe, so mayhaps it reaffirms her belief that Shinji does not truly need her, and that he is using her? Mayhaps Asuka felt she needed Shinji, hence she feels disgusted by her own actions?

One thing I find interesting is how it is Shiji and Asuka who are the only ones shown at the end. Although it is true that others can return (and may), and it may be because Asuka and Shinji did pilot the machines that they were the first to return, but does not one wonder? In the conversation Shinji has, he mentions how he wants to return so things feel real, and we know he has been depressed. So, could it be those who have felt depression or not truly close to anyone the ones most likely to

@Teksunai return to the world in their human form as a result? Because it does not feel real? While others who may have had open existences be more likely to join as one because they do not feel that there is anything wrong? It makes one wonder if this is a beginning of sorts who have had troubled times. Also, since Asuka was dead, it suggests those who recently died may be able to return, as long as they remember themselves. (It is hard to say if it is possible Rei or Kawuri -?- to return).

@Teksunai It is also interesting about the red "sea" as it seems very lonely, and shows how life may be flat in comparison to real life, and how the LCD -because it is morphing into one entity- may one day feel lonely itself. I wonder if animals and plants will be able to remember themselves? That would be interesting. :D Seas have been known to represent solitude as well. There seems to be a symbolism with the sea (besides the obvious fact that most things have joined as one xPPPP).

@Teksunai And with Asuka's final words... maybe she feels disgust towards many things. For example, she may feel disgustd with herself because her big thing was how she felt she was with her mother when she was fighting the angels. In the LCD, she could have stayed in there with her mother. Considering she remembered herself, and wanted to return, it suggests that she wanted to be her own person, hence she is sickened by how dependent she was on her mother, and with that in mind, along with

@Teksunai everyone else who stayed in the sea. Mayhaps she says,"How disgusting," because the only person back so far is Shinji, who almost strangled her. Mayhaps, while in the LCD, she was a part of his "mother" who comforted him, and she may feel disgusted how well it works, or maybe she wanted to be killed, and was disgusted with the effect it had on him. It could be because of the tears, for the "hero" or "god" is now breaking down in front of her, instead of being strong.

@Zero4ph THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE CORRECTIONS! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^0^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ It has been soooo long since I saw this anime, and I just loved the person who uploaded this video idea, but I forgot how to spell certain things! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!! ^^^0^^^ You get a cookie for that!
'I need you.' affirms Shinji's choice to return to reality, and in doing so has separated himself from Asuka once more. His first impulse is to strangle her, to finish what he started during Instrumentality. But then he feels her caress (which is very similar to the one he received from his mother only moments before) and realizes what he's doing. He releases his grip and began to cry, the scene is there to prove "pain once again exists"
I'd have to say no - God isn't a creature from another planet. If he was, there would be evidence of alien technology left behind on Earth. There isn't any. Besides, what would the motivation of such aliens be in setting things up in our religions the way they are? It makes no sense and there is no evidence.
@Zero4ph god is almost a word. anybody can become a god. shinji is a god now or his eva is god now. the First Ancestral Race created Adam and Lilith send to earth before human was born. both of them are seef of life. religions is just fantasy. there`s many evidence. of alien created human. god is just a word.
sorry I thought you were asking if God is an alien okay never mind it then, anyway yea Since the First Ancestral Race are the ultimate creators of humans as well as Angels, they could be considered "gods" from the perspective of both.
The confidential files (its on the evageeks wiki if you did not play the ps2 game years ago) state that the "God" or "Gods" that created Adam and Lillith and the rest of the seeds were FAR (First Ancestral Race) The Dead Sea Scrolls, the Spears of Longinus, and The White and Black Moon were all provided by them, as well as Adam and Lillith, who respectively came each in their own moons. The FAR were technically the gods of humanity. So, in NGE, God or the Gods are aliens.
@Zero4ph you know the thing with the sense is the problem. who says that we as humans could possibly understand what somebody like god does or wants, let alone if he even exists. humanity always tries to understand everything by using logic. what if for example god or the making of the world are so complicated that we just cant understand it because our brains are not capable of logically understanding something like that. we always think were the most intelligent species in the entire universe.
@l33tnobody1337 what if we arent? what if there are things that go beyond our understanding, things we will never be able to imagine or understand? anyways lets go back to evangelion. the end how i saw it: Everybody goes insanse, A Group of old augmented psychos command some army to attack the nerv HQ, with the plan to destroy the entire world. dunno if the army knew about that plan or not. because if seele told them: hey your going to attack the nerv hq to destroy the entire world,
@l33tnobody1337 did they just say: Fuck Yea!? anyways, so they attack the nerv hq. meanwhile shinji faps on asukas tits, cums and walks away. asuka didnt notice cuz she was asleep or something. they put her in the eva, she wakes up, kills the seele evas but doesnt cuz they kill her. meanwhile shinjis behaving like a 5 year old. misato rescues him and dies.shinji sits inside the eva. he watches asuka die and goes: WWHHHHAAAAARGHBHJKBHJGKHJKLHK. Then he cries. again.
@l33tnobody1337 then everybody goes completely insane. Rei turns into a god, shinji turns into a god too. gendou kills ritsuko, shinji somehow kills gendo"u" then the entire world population turns into tomato soup. except for shinji and asuka which is suddenly alive again. everyone else is still tomato soup. shinji tries to kill asuka even tho it appears he actually loves her, oh well he propably just wanted to rape her dead body. she touches his face. he lets go of her,
I may need to watch the last 20 mins again but when the last angel spills all that red sparkly stuff out does that mean everyone has been revived, that last part went right over my head
the manga seems to be different. Shinji isn't the coward he is in the movies. And Asuka doesn't get injured when fighting the Eva's, because Shinji came to rescue her, because of his prommes made to Misato " I will protect Asuka with all my life". In the manga you can see that Asuka is falling in love with him, and that Shinji is becoming more mature and more protective towards her. Shinji became an adult thanks to Misato's sacrifice, and Asuka stops hating herself thanks to her mother.
Personally I felt relived when I saw that Asuka was revived. It was satisfying to see her alive, after she endured most horrible and unnecessary death. It was nice gesture from the author of the movie to return her, otherwise I would have trouble sleeping after I saw what happened to her. It was so satisfying to hear that "How disgusting" - meaning she haven't changed at all :) And as for Shinji... well he is the biggest wimp I ever saw - I hope that he will change someday :/
Shinji is a very irritating character at first as he never seems to be happy. But when you realize what a shitty world he lives in and what a shitty life he lives, you suddenly find that he has every right to be the way he is. He's just an unsure 14-year-old boy living in a world that is half-destroyed. ;)
You have a point there, but considering his earlier actions (e.g. rescuing Asuka from a volcano, rescuing Rei from her pod) one could expect, that the boy realizes that the true happiness is earned by giving something to others, not by hoping and waiting for someone to give you something for nothing :) In my opinion, his inability to comprehend that fact leads toward death of all people who are dear to him. Even in the end he doesn't understand it - that's what makes him disgusting.
@Zero4ph Are you also some twilight fan emo fagget? Go slice your wrists. The world we live in is no better. Our lives are no better. But, for those of us with an actual soul, strong mind and guts, we don't sit in the corner in a fetal form and sobbing about our bad luck. We go out and kick some ass, make a living and fighting to survive.
No, he has no right to be the way he is. All he is in the end is just some moany, spineless, selfish, emo loser with some down syndrome. That bitch Asuka has more balls than him by contrast, which is just plain sad. If this was Gurren Lagann he would've been killed by episode 1. He ain't got no fighting spirit or will or nothing. Just QQ MOAR is all he does. A lamer who'll never get anywhere in life, a loser with a capital L on his forehead.
@dayofnightstudios If the point was to make a protagonist that any decent person hates and abhors as to never want to be like that, which only twilight emo fagget fans could sympathize/identify with, then well done.
Despite the grim nature of the show, a key underlying theme of the story is intended to be optimistic: that despite our flaws, humans seek meaningful connections with each other and meaning to our lives, and if we can endure life's pitfalls we can find such things and better appreciate them.
is rei an angel or is she the body of lillth? what about kaouro (i don't know how we spell his name) are rei and kaouro the same? are they all dead ? the third impact happened? at the ned asuka is she in the world of shinji or is she dead? is shiji a psycopath? ('cause he was strangling asuka)
@nmigeo The third impact indeed occurs, but its not the "destructive" one, but rather the one caused by instrumentality which allows humans to trascends and evolve to one unique being, all humanities at fields are broken and humans become lcl which unites with lilith/rei since rei was the vessel for liliths soul. Because of instrumentality, everyone can choose to either be a part of the new "being" or come back to the world as individuals, shinji choose the latter and finds asuka has indeed too
i watch every movie and episode of evangelion but i can't figure out what happens at the end of evangelion, why does he strangles asuka, why are they like the only survivers in this world, is this all a bad dream, did the third impact happen, i swear i could for hours about this movie, did lillith die at the end? help someone i need answers to understand and is this the final movie, episode or what ever of evangelion? DID SHIJI KILL ASUKA? are we all made out of lillith?(not in the real life)
@nmigeo The movie is basically left for interpretation but basically, shinji was the key for the third impact, he comes back to the world rejecting to unite with the rest of the human race, then he finds asuka by his side which might mean she also rejected instrumentality and came back to life as a human, shinji then wants to feel alive by asukas rejection, he strangles her but instead asuka acknowledges her feelings and then insults him to make him feel comfort reassuring hes alive. : )
I think that Shinji tries to strangle her because he is ashamed of what happened, and he does not want Asuka to see what he caused. He breaks down when he realizes that she is conscious. She then expresses disgust for his cowardice, or his fear of facing the aftermath of the third impact
I always thought it was funny that people were genuinely confused about Shinji letting third impact happen, when the only person in his entire life to actually show him kindness without expecting something in return was an alien that his human commanders wanted him to kill.
i hope that the end of the new EVA (Rebuild of eva) that's coming out Fall 2012 will have the answers to this ending... BUT I DON'T WANT TO FUCKING WAIT THAT LONG!
Shinji realizes that particular happiness is fake because there are no conflicts and interaction with others. Shinji was apparently the first to reject the Human Instrumentality Project, thus he rises up from the LCL in physical human form.
@OrewaOtakuDesu tbh you have to take it as you see it. there are lots of thearys but for sure gendo wanted to be with his wife again, the human instrementality project basicly intoxicates you its not painfull its everyone together as one being LCL. Ray chose to give shinji his own choice on how the fate of the world whould coinside, so he chose free will with auska ray and masato. there all apart of auska :p look at the eye colour and the bandages. thats my thoughts on it anyway.
The kid just went through the literal incarnation of hell, sacrifices possibly the last "person" who actually showed her love for him, and all he gets out of it is "How disgusting..." I don't think it is physically possible to make this his life suck worse.
I'm really not sure what to make of this ending.

machinimamarlon 3 weeks ago
i've seen in Japaneses TV show before that woman that was voice-acting as Asuka was guest.
and she said in the show she was asked by Anno( directer) when creating film " how do you feel some guy was masturbating beside of your bed while you are sleeping?" and she answered to Anno "thats how disgusting" and Anno said " thats exactly what i thought "...
so in this movie " how disgusting " is an answer about what Shinji did in the very beginning of this film.. i know its still complicated though
maxisssty 3 weeks ago

GiddyGherkin 1 month ago
@GiddyGherkin
My impression is that she woke up right after the scene from the beginning in the hospital bed, and had no knowledge of everything that had transpired since the beginning of the movie. Her statement is a long delayed reaction to Shinji's first action in the movie.
JeanCocteau777 3 weeks ago

She already knew even before the final scene its during pre-instrumentality "Personal Hell train car scene" but technically that didn't really happen it was all part of Shinji's mind. ;)

Can't say for certain, because the rebuild is only half finished. However from what I have seen so far, even though the rebuild has better animation, the slow pace of the TV series is alot more suited to these characters and their development, In My Humble Opinion.

He releases his grip and began to cry, the scene is there to prove "pain once again exists"

aliens create Adam and Lilith. then human create evangelion. so the alien is a god?
blood16ful 1 month ago
@blood16ful
I'd have to say no - God isn't a creature from another planet. If he was, there would be evidence of alien technology left behind on Earth. There isn't any. Besides, what would the motivation of such aliens be in setting things up in our religions the way they are? It makes no sense and there is no evidence.
Zero4ph 1 month ago 13
@Zero4ph god is almost a word. anybody can become a god. shinji is a god now or his eva is god now. the First Ancestral Race created Adam and Lilith send to earth before human was born. both of them are seef of life. religions is just fantasy. there`s many evidence. of alien created human. god is just a word.
blood16ful 1 month ago
@blood16ful
sorry I thought you were asking if God is an alien okay never mind it then, anyway yea Since the First Ancestral Race are the ultimate creators of humans as well as Angels, they could be considered "gods" from the perspective of both.
Zero4ph 1 month ago 7
@Zero4ph Actually....
So, in NGE, God or the Gods are aliens.

the manga seems to be different.

He's just an unsure 14-year-old boy living in a world that is half-destroyed. ;)

@Zero4ph
Even in the end he doesn't understand it - that's what makes him disgusting.

nmigeo 3 months ago
@nmigeo The third impact indeed occurs, but its not the "destructive" one, but rather the one caused by instrumentality which allows humans to trascends and evolve to one unique being, all humanities at fields are broken and humans become lcl which unites with lilith/rei since rei was the vessel for liliths soul. Because of instrumentality, everyone can choose to either be a part of the new "being" or come back to the world as individuals, shinji choose the latter and finds asuka has indeed too
