@patchouli85 This looks amazing. Does the heat straightening affect your natural texture at all? I tried using heat a long time ago for bangs and lost the natural curl in the front of my hair. (I did a LOT wrong though)
This is the best transformation of natural to silky straight tut I have seen on youtube! Thank you for this! These are the results I get from my stylist. I have been natural for about 6 years and some naturals that want to straighten still do not know that they can achieve these results at home. Thanks again :)
Is there suggestions for black men, with short hair? I want to straighten my hair, so i can gel it and stuff. I was thinking of relax it but it's dangerous. What is the best thing for me to do?
love the video my lil sis is mixed and always wears her hair naturally curly but likes her hair straight... i know how to do hair but didn't know how to make her hair straight without any chemicals =D
WOW. I will go natural if my hair will still look that beautiful when I flatiron... there's no need for a perm then! lol.. because I can be curly when I want to, and straight when I want to.
hi i wanted to know when you put the fhi hot sauce in yu put it in when your hair is wet and you blow dry it...but after that what do you use to flat iron the hair with. like do you use anything to straighten or no...
If you want a professional flat iron and you are ok with spending around $140 I would highly recommend the Karmin G3 Salon Pro, it heats up to 450f with temperature control, dual voltage, tourmaline ceramic plates with rounded edges which makes it great for also curling your hair. Also has a 3 year warranty. If you do look at other irons make sure to stay away from irons with painted plates (colored plates) these can damage your hair.

My hair is natural..whenever I blow dry or flat iron my roots are never straight/flat...UGH!! Any suggestions (I keep trimming them). Thanks and keep up the good work! God Bless
I need help!! I'm a natural 4a and my ends won't straighten properly. What could be causing it? I only used heat twice since first going natural (2 years ago) Could it be that my hair is not used to the heat, or do I have to buy a better flat iron( I just trimmed my ends, so they can't be split). I'm getting REALLY frustrated!! Do you have to train your ends to stay straight?? PLEASE reply quickly..thanks!
P.S. What is the best flat iron for coily hair type??
@sugarcane91 i had the same issue until i watched a video on youtube. Basically when you are straightening your hair use a thin comb and follow through with a flat iron at the same time and it will straighten it all the way through. I hope that helps
Wow since i seen this video i am suppose to get my hair done tuesday and couldnt find a style no where and i founf my hairstyle thx @ 2:21 or 2:27 or 2:30 THX SO MUCH!
what kind of twist did the girl in the first half of the video have (just after the part that of the video that says 8 months after)? I am also transitioning to natural hair and would like to die it as well, what are some good hair colors for people with brownish skin (not light skin or super dark skin... may be a shade or two darker than yours)
@123sncmelia321 hiya, have you tried using anti humidity spray? and or anti frizz cream? pantene has awesome anti humidity spray n sauve makes nice anti frizz cream, u can find them both on the walmart site and have them shipped to ur house probably n they only cost around 3-5$ each. I hope this helps you! ^_^
after watching this i wonder why should i keep on relaxing my hair with harmful and painful chemicals that don't even last much enough? i am soo going natural! btw on 1:46 that hair is beautiful, it looks so healthy and shiny!
Finally got to try doing my hair this way (and a slightly diff take on the deep conditioning from your other vid) and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the results! My hair is lighter, silkier, and tons of movement. I have officially stopped relaxing my hair! Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you! I can't say it enough! :-)
will this work on 4b hair?? cuz my blowouts never turn out rite, my hair dries out quickly and coils back up even tighter, especially in my crown area:(
@HiMaintanenceGrl my daughter and i are 4b. i am so so thankful for this video because our hair held up this summer using this method. even today i went out in the rain without an umbrella and my hair got wet a little but it's still holding up this evening
Hi, I love your site, Please stop by my blog and shed some of your ideas, it's for all my girls caught in the tug of war b/t being natural & the 1B, 22in, this blog is for you:
I needed this I've been tempted to flat iron my hair but I wasn't that great with relaxed hair and I didn't want to ruin/mess with what I have now, but I will give thk
okay ladies i got a tip for you just dont put anything in your hair let grow by itself , let nature take care of it right now im 18 but since i was 14 i stop putting conditioners moisterzers .....now a days i just wash my hair when i take my braids out and just do my hair in braids without putting any cream in it only cocoa butter and now my hair is close to my elbows and btw im 100% african and i have a very big afro
This is amazing work never seen hair so strait with a flat iron. you say only 1/2 inch at a time? will give it a try... most impressed! how long have you been transitioning for?
@bbnne1: Heyy! Yep. I've co-wash w/ Kera Care (KC) fr JC Penny weekly. I use KC shampoo (plus conditioner) 1x a mo. or else it b/c too limp & wont hold curls. After ea. co-wash or shampoo/co-wash I use the KC leave-in conditioner.I put in leave-in, cover w/ a plastic cap, exercise/house wrk (for heat) then wash out after 1-2 hrs, not ovrernight- I learned the hard way! Moisterize daily w/ melted Shea Butter (ends only) and Aveda Brilliant thruout hair. ponytail ends under. trim 6-7 wks. :)
great vid. thx for educating me. I'm glad u emphazed deep conditioning. thats what i'v ebeen doing wrong. i wuz just putting Kera Care condiioner on for only 5 mins. or so (b/c that's what they did @ the salon i used to go to. The deep conditioning transformed the texture of my hair like u said!! Oh, & shedding was greatly diminished to. WOW! THX ^_^
I love this video. I've been doing my own hair for about 3 years now...no relaxer. I wash, blow dry, and flat iron. Occassionally I'll put in a semi-permanent hair color or rinse for extra shine and to cover some grays. But lately I've been getting lots of split ends....is it the color or flat irons? I've had the same ones for about 5 years. Should I buy a new unit? The only reason I keep them is because they're 1/2" wide and I can get close to my scalp with them. Please help. Thank you.
@tctulip313 split ends come with any type of heat or color in your hair, it's just normal wear and tear on your hair. either go get your ends trimmed by a trusted beautician or purchase a split ender and use it every 6-8 weeks.
I dont get it do you use a relaxer or not? or are you just showing hair without weave? the hair looks great I just want to know I have been thinking about not using relaxers anymore but I have not seen results of flat ironing with out it so is this it..
Thanks so much. I'm a "Halfrican" half black and white but my hair has like no white genes in it so this really helped me when it came to blow-drying. From now on I'll let it air dry in my braids then get it.
Thank you for posting this video. I have natural hair and I am interested in flat ironing it... What is CHI and FHI. Sorry if that is a sill question but I really dont know.
Is it possible to get results even remotely close to these with out blowdrying? Is there some kind of style i could do and the hair airdries nicely enough but not completely a freakin fro? It's just that not only do i personally not like blowdrying because of all the heat (nt even including the flat ironing), but i'm pretty sure i would suck at doing it myself anyway.
Omg!!! I know I responded to this video before.. I think with a question.. But since they changed the format, I gave the vid a thumbs up.. When I did that, I saw that 11 ppl dislike this vid.. I cannot believe it!!! Like this is one of the best vids on Youtube for flat ironing natural hair!! I love it!!! I always go to this vid or tell my other natural friends about it..
Beautiful! Showing how to do it healthy with no chemicals...love it! I have gone back and forth over the years but now I see it can acutally be done without all the chemicals. Your slide show actually looks better than a fresh relaxer would! The shine can't be denied!
i love it, i am currently trying to go back to my natural, and i did not want to cut all my hair off at one time...and i have always heard people say that I could not put any kind of heat on my hair, but your video really helped me out a lot. In the transitioning period it is really difficult to style your hair. so thank u...and for the deep conditioning video as well. -Josie
That was great! Can you do a video showing how much and how you apply the heat protectant, as well as how you flat iron? It would be greatly appreciated!
Can you transition to natural hair without cutting the perm? Your hair looks beautiful and looks like you made a smooth transition by flat ironing it. I too was told no heat..
If you use a spray heat protectant how would you incorporate them into the way you straighten? Should I spray each half section or the whole hair after blow drying or air drying?
this is beautiful...u r exactly right about the deep conditioning...I'm natural again, so I will start deep conditioning regularly w/ the added honey, olive etc. added to the conditioner
Perhaps to get smoother results I should use some sort of smoothing cream or leave-in as well? It might just be the thickness or my haircut that's making my hair look so big though. BTW my hair is a 3c-4a mix. Also, how often have you straightened your hair since you've been natural? I'm kinda afraid to do it too often as I fear heat damage. Is once a month too much?
I flat ironed my hair for the second time since going natural yesterday - I washed and deep conditioned the day before then let my hair air dry in braids before flat ironing (no blow drying). All I used was CHI silk infusion and my FHI Heat flat iron (410 degrees). My hair didn't come out quite as smooth as I'd like - is this probably because I didn't blow dry before ironing? (continued)
@dharmaluvsu Try the chase method. Its featured in my follow-up vid. Helps. And blow drying before ironing helps as well. Even when I let my hair air-dry while wearing braids, I will go thru it with a blo-dryer b4 flat ironing.
what product from Nioxin do you use? Also, the ends of my hair when flat ironed are stiff, does that mean i need to trim them? i went from locks back to natural.
Your ends could be very dry. If deep conditioning and baggying does not help, I would trim them. When wearing natural styles, moisturize and seal, paying close attention to your ends.
You all have such beautiful healthy hair. What are the top rules for getting healthy long hair. My hair is "good" but once it gets about two inches past my shoulders it breaks splits and falls out. I know moisturizing is important but my hair drinks oil easily and does nothing. but Im "mixed" so most stuff weighs it down. any suggestions?
Oil is not going to moisturize your hair, it helps to seal in the moisture. Apply a water based moisturizer followed by oil or shea butter to seal it in.
If you are wearing your hair straight, then deep condition before you flat iron. If your hair breaks easily, apply Aphogee's Protein and Moisture treatment..available at Sally's.
I love this video? But my hair, which is a super duper thick 4a just puffs. In other words, it will not get bone straight. How important is the shampoo? Also, how do you moisturize your hair AFTER it has been flat ironed? Thanks. Awesome video. I am 10 months into my transition to natural by the way.
It is important to use shampoos and conditioners that lay the cuticles flat. In any brand you choose look for key words like "anti frizz", "smooth", "shine", "anti humectant" etc. because they will aide in achieving a flat smooth finish.
My hair is not very thick and gets oily fast so I don;t add anything to it. You want to find a light moisturizer that won't way the hair down, Sebastain has a serum that I like.
hello, I have a question I get my hair washed and set now and I like to use the chi on my hair because it doesnt seem to weigh my hair down but do you put something on your hair everyday? or how often do you put any product on your hair in between washes?
I don't add anything to my hair after I flat iron because it naturally gets really oily. If you need something on your hair between washes when flat ironing, you can use a light serum.
If I'm wearing it curly I moisturize and seal with shea butter everyday.
Patchouli I've seen this tutorial on your fotki & its great to see the client's hair 8 months later. My hair is 4b/z. Much coarser than hers & yours. Can the CHI iron & products get mine that silky? I want to go natural, but only if its possible to flat-iron it to that extent now & then. Thanx in advance.
My Chi's wiring is messed up so now I only use my FHI Heat and FHI Runway. The key to a great flatiron look is deep conditioning. I suggest you deep condition weekly. I am in the 4a/4b range.
Thanks to a switch in my flatiron regimen, my hair is very light and bouncy...better results than this video and when I was relaxed. I use Nioxin to cleanse and strip the hair of build-up and I shampoo and condtion with Alterna Hemp Straight. The key is to use a no greasy SULFATE FREE shampoo and conditioner to lay the cuticle flat.
Thank you so much. I'll search for a good non SLS 'poo. I deep condition & cowash about 3 times a week. I didn't know I had to strip the hair to prep for flat ironing. I think that might solve my problems.
Great video! Which CHI flatiron do you use? Can you adjust the settings? How do you get your ends so smooth? Maybe I need a trim. Cuz my ends look a lil tangled. How often do you flatiron? Does your curl pattern seem loose after you wash again?
I no longer use Chi b/c my wiring is messed up. I use my FHI now and I always use the highest setting. Clean trimmed ends are best. My curl pattern springs back.
thx for the tips .... i wanted to know what brand and type of round brush do you use for the hair. and I notice those ladies in the video have great ends and trim would you mind make a video on how you might trim ends and maybe a bang would be nice.
I LOVE this video. I am really interested in you doing a tutorial for the twists that one of the girls had in this video. I REALLY love that look and can't figure out how to do it for the life of me! :(
Thanks so much. I have been natural for about 18 months (two strand twists) and was thinking about changing up to a straight style. I am off shopping to buy a flatiron
you're lucky you know how to flat iron your hair SO well!

I hope this helps.

Thanks so much. I'm a "Halfrican" half black and white but my hair has like no white genes in it so this really helped me when it came to blow-drying. From now on I'll let it air dry in my braids then get it.

-Josie

Can you transition to natural hair without cutting the perm? Your hair looks beautiful and looks like you made a smooth transition by flat ironing it. I too was told no heat..

whats the best flatiron? is there a simpler way 2 do this?
taylorhottner 1 year ago
I"ve only used FHI and CHI. Its always easier if someone flatirons for you.
patchouli85 1 year ago
If you use a spray heat protectant how would you incorporate them into the way you straighten? Should I spray each half section or the whole hair after blow drying or air drying?
cutiepieCali 1 year ago
@cutiepieCali you are supposed to spray your whole head before blowdrying

patchouli85 2 years ago
Perhaps to get smoother results I should use some sort of smoothing cream or leave-in as well? It might just be the thickness or my haircut that's making my hair look so big though. BTW my hair is a 3c-4a mix. Also, how often have you straightened your hair since you've been natural? I'm kinda afraid to do it too often as I fear heat damage. Is once a month too much?
dharmaluvsu 2 years ago
I flatiron every 6-8 weeks to trim my hair.
patchouli85 2 years ago
Great video!
I kind of have quite alot of questions:
I flat ironed my hair for the second time since going natural yesterday - I washed and deep conditioned the day before then let my hair air dry in braids before flat ironing (no blow drying). All I used was CHI silk infusion and my FHI Heat flat iron (410 degrees). My hair didn't come out quite as smooth as I'd like - is this probably because I didn't blow dry before ironing? (continued)
How long have you been straightening your hair?
dharmaluvsu 2 years ago
@dharmaluvsu Try the chase method. Its featured in my follow-up vid. Helps. And blow drying before ironing helps as well. Even when I let my hair air-dry while wearing braids, I will go thru it with a blo-dryer b4 flat ironing.
SuperHotChocolate 2 years ago
Yes, blow drying helps to smooth the hair. I use an ionic blow dryer.
I flat iron every 6-8 weeks now to trim and style.
patchouli85 2 years ago
you should do a blow dry tutorial video...that would be nice !
alebat134 2 years ago 22
what product from Nioxin do you use? Also, the ends of my hair when flat ironed are stiff, does that mean i need to trim them? i went from locks back to natural.
hairworx79 2 years ago
Your ends could be very dry. If deep conditioning and baggying does not help, I would trim them. When wearing natural styles, moisturize and seal, paying close attention to your ends.
patchouli85 2 years ago
I use the Nioxin cleasnser #5
patchouli85 2 years ago
You all have such beautiful healthy hair. What are the top rules for getting healthy long hair. My hair is "good" but once it gets about two inches past my shoulders it breaks splits and falls out. I know moisturizing is important but my hair drinks oil easily and does nothing. but Im "mixed" so most stuff weighs it down. any suggestions?
cherrybc 1 year ago
same thing is what mom says could happen to me.
taylorhottner 1 year ago
Oil is not going to moisturize your hair, it helps to seal in the moisture. Apply a water based moisturizer followed by oil or shea butter to seal it in.
patchouli85 1 year ago
If you are wearing your hair straight, then deep condition before you flat iron. If your hair breaks easily, apply Aphogee's Protein and Moisture treatment..available at Sally's.
patchouli85 1 year ago
Hi, do you use a comb attachment to blow dry- or some other technique?
Virtuenow 2 years ago
I like to use a round brush or my Denman.
patchouli85 2 years ago
I love this video? But my hair, which is a super duper thick 4a just puffs. In other words, it will not get bone straight. How important is the shampoo? Also, how do you moisturize your hair AFTER it has been flat ironed? Thanks. Awesome video. I am 10 months into my transition to natural by the way.
nitavcc 2 years ago 2
It is important to use shampoos and conditioners that lay the cuticles flat. In any brand you choose look for key words like "anti frizz", "smooth", "shine", "anti humectant" etc. because they will aide in achieving a flat smooth finish.
My hair is not very thick and gets oily fast so I don;t add anything to it. You want to find a light moisturizer that won't way the hair down, Sebastain has a serum that I like.
patchouli85 2 years ago
hello, I have a question I get my hair washed and set now and I like to use the chi on my hair because it doesnt seem to weigh my hair down but do you put something on your hair everyday? or how often do you put any product on your hair in between washes?
shealuvr8 2 years ago
I don't add anything to my hair after I flat iron because it naturally gets really oily. If you need something on your hair between washes when flat ironing, you can use a light serum.
If I'm wearing it curly I moisturize and seal with shea butter everyday.

Alterna is a sulfate free brand available at Ulta. You can google and find others that are not as expensive.

Thanx in advance.
lavinialive 2 years ago
My Chi's wiring is messed up so now I only use my FHI Heat and FHI Runway. The key to a great flatiron look is deep conditioning. I suggest you deep condition weekly. I am in the 4a/4b range.
patchouli85 2 years ago
Thanks to a switch in my flatiron regimen, my hair is very light and bouncy...better results than this video and when I was relaxed. I use Nioxin to cleanse and strip the hair of build-up and I shampoo and condtion with Alterna Hemp Straight. The key is to use a no greasy SULFATE FREE shampoo and conditioner to lay the cuticle flat.
patchouli85 2 years ago
Thank you so much. I'll search for a good non SLS 'poo. I deep condition & cowash about 3 times a week. I didn't know I had to strip the hair to prep for flat ironing. I think that might solve my problems.

patchouli85 2 years ago
Great video! Which CHI flatiron do you use? Can you adjust the settings? How do you get your ends so smooth? Maybe I need a trim. Cuz my ends look a lil tangled. How often do you flatiron? Does your curl pattern seem loose after you wash again?
ebonybrn4584 2 years ago
I no longer use Chi b/c my wiring is messed up. I use my FHI now and I always use the highest setting. Clean trimmed ends are best. My curl pattern springs back.
patchouli85 2 years ago
thx for the tips .... i wanted to know what brand and type of round brush do you use for the hair. and I notice those ladies in the video have great ends and trim would you mind make a video on how you might trim ends and maybe a bang would be nice.
