  • there are numerous reasons to flush hydrants. In detroits case they have a very high arson rate. serious arsonists will do whatever it takes to burn a building. somethings they try are steal hydrant caps or fill the hydrant with stuff to prevent water flow. its just some things to look out for kudos to the operator for flushin it out.

  • to funny.. it must just be the firefighter in us...first thing we all wanted to tell you was that he was just flushing the hydraunt.. lol By the way cops always ( ALWAYS ) seem to find just the right spot to park...

  • yup I agree, pretty much everywhere will flush the hydrant first to get sediment out and make sure its flowing, etc. You would ruin a half a million dollar apparatus with rust and sediment going into it. And more importantly the guys on the end of the line may be left without water.

  • Must be nice showing up to battle a blaze knowing that the assholes shooting up the place might kill you before the fire even gets the opportunity.

  • Does anyone know what kind of fire truck the engine at the hydrant was? Kinda odd looking in the front.

  • in detroit some drug dealers will store drugs in the hydrants for other dealers to pick up later. Numerous acounts of bags of coke stuck in the pumper. gotta flush that shit out first.

  • well.. I was gonna comment on the hydrant flushing.. but since I saw your comment about being corrected.. and several of the correction comments.. there's obviously no reason to.. lol.. having said that... awesome video!!!

  • i just am glad to see that atlanta cops arent the only cops to block a plug

  • i love detroit you get the whole deal fire gun fight all at the same time looked like a war movie

  • why was the swat team there .. was the man trapped an arsonist something?

  • There not TRYING the hydrant its flushing the shit out of it so it doesnt get into the pumper and cause problems

  • The hydrants are flushed not just to see if they work, but to clear them of gravel, debris, etc.

  • Go figure Cop parks cruiser / blocks fire hydrant ....morons

  • love how the cop grabbed the gun

  • Like how the cop blocks the hydrent hmmm that's a ticket

  • In my department, the probies usually hooks up the hydrants not the driver

  • Very nice footage bro! Oh btw, he wasn't "testing it to see if it works" lol....He was flushing the sediment that settles in a hydrant (notice the icky brown water that comes out)...you dont want that stuff going into ur pump and ruining it.

    But awesome video man!

  • Typical Policeman blocking the Hydrant!!! Maybe if he didn't have tunnel vision he could see what he was doing!!lmao

  • @MrYouknowBetta Yeah, he should have been watching where he parked, But remember, hes putting his game face on. In the next few seconds, he may be facing a nut case with a gun. Where he parked prolly wasnt on the top 5 things he was thinking at that moment.

  • Many firefighters have been kind enough to point out my error in describing the engineer's actions at the hydrant, and I thank you. I had to delete a comment here from someone who doesn't know how to act civilized. I (and many others) respect the firefighting profession very highly. I always believe that if you are a professional, then you should act like one on the job and off, and that goes for comments on Youtube. Stay safe.

  • @alltopo It's very unfortunate, but firefighting is like any other job. There will always be some of us who have no business calling themselves a firefighter. It is sad and I am sorry to see that someone would make offensive comments to you about your mistake. Believe me, no true firefighter would fault you for making that comment. How are you supposed to know? Thank you for the great video and don't let those few bad apples tarnish your image of fire service volunteers and professionals.

  • comment on the video is "they have to try the hydrant first to see if it works"....

Yep, and it blows out any garbage (cans, drugs, etc) which have been stuffed into the hydrant body out onto the street instead of into the pump. And as for it working....no bigger time waster than hooking up and realizing you have a broken valve stem and then having to pack the truck back up and find the next hydrant on the next block.

  • i noticed the comment bout the fire hydrant it was not opened to cheak to c if if work we bleed the hydrant to make sure there is no air and so the pump isnt pumping dirty water did you notice how dirty it was at first that can mess a pump up just so u kno lol

  • @firefighter1239dc5 thats what i thought, besides, shouldnt they be more worried about that state trooper who parked infront of the hydrent? i know i would be.

  • @miller225879 lol if it was it our county two broken cop windows would of had the officer thinking twice bout parking there we dont ask poeple to move it the mistake and isurance covers it lol

  • @firefighter1239dc5 hahaha yeah really though. but as far as that goes, dont have to deal with that where im at, the hard part is through the winter trying to get open water lol.

  • @miller225879 ya true dat we have dry hydrants thank god our wet hydrant always freze in the buro

  • @firefighter1239dc5 i think there is one dry hydrent in the next district that we use is we are called for mutial aid. but ive never used it, im always on seane doing the small but seeminly most important stuff when we do get called for a fire.

  • @miller225879 lol ya we had a house fire this morning one of them were frozon and of course 300 ft of five inch to the nxt hydrat hahaha

  • here is a link to some facebook pics taken some time after the call out.

  • @MrFiremankyle

Still can't get to them. I took stills throughout, too, though haven't posted, including the guys in handcuffs and three firefighters up on the roof.

  • To the camera guy who said "they have to test the hydrants to see if that work" are something along those lines.. He is clearing the hydrant be for hooking to that 600-900k rigs pump.. Every time the city repairs a line, rocks etc fall into the pipes and flow to the hydrants.. We don't want that crap running through our pumps so we flow the hydrant be for hooking it to our rigs.

  • @pcfd20

ive had a toy superman come flying out of them also. i believe that it was a hydrant that someone opened up on a hot day and a kid stuck it in there.

  • @tgriz18 Wow! Wish I'd caught that one on camera! Maybe Elvis will come flying out someday...

  • to the person taping this, he was not testing the hydrent, he was giving it a quick flush to get all the dirty water out to make sure there was no dirt to get into the pumper and screw it and not be able to put any water on the fire at all. and thats really not what you should be worried about, i mean sersously a state trooper dont have enough brains to park else where....................................................

  • @miller225879 haha opps didnt c someone already said something on this lol

  • There has to be more to this story. Cop who blocks hydrant (idiot!) is carrying an M-16 assault riffle. Near end of video, is sheriff’s bus and what looks to be SWAT team and German Sheppard? I know Detroit is a bit rough, but do the police arrest fires?

  • @drewzifer the traped man was susposetly being fired apun by people downstairs

  • My wonky camera work near the start is due to discovering there are people with guns in the house trying to kill the guy who was trapped upstairs! We moved back quickly to a safer brick wall. In defense of the deputy, I don't think he saw the hydrant, as his eyes were on the house. We were all expecting shots, though there were none.

  • Testing the hydrant doesn't only prove that it works. It clears most of the debris out that would otherwise harm the pump on the engine. Eg. Aluminum can, plastic bottles etc. that neighborhood kids/adults would place in the plug.

    Good video otherwise.

  • Leave it to the cops to block the fire plug.. Dumb ass.. lol They are clearing the brown water out of the plug before using it.. Trust me, they know the plugs that don't work.

  • stop filming the ground dude!

  • love how the cops waste no time blocking the hydrant in the beginning.

  • Leave it to the cop to block the fire hydrant!! Looks like a job well done by the DFD!

  • Thanks for posting this. Curious.. why all the law enforcement? I'm a proby in a rural area. Thanks.

  • @lisaannshaw Read the entire initial entry. It explains why all the police are there.

  • Besides Engine 1, right behind him came Engine 5, Ladder 20, Chief 5, Squad 5, Engine 8 and Engine 17. A very quick response, and all ended well. They had firefighters right up in that top room with the fire right away. At 1:40 you can see people at the back waiting for rescue. They had been up in the window beneath the letter L when I arrived. Great job, DFD! Because of a Veteran's Parade downtown, there were police everywhere. Thanks to j2brown for the brown water comment!

  • They're not just testing the hydrant to see if it works, they're also letting all that nasty brown water out before they put it into their expensive pumper. It's a fairly standard practice.
