The general rule-of-thumb in the USA is that if your land is in an area zoned for livestock (e.g. you can keep chickens, etc.), then it is perfectly legal to destroy any animal, someone’s pet or not, that is threatening the safety of your own animals. The only animals exempt from you taking immediate action, legally, are those listed on endangered or threatened species lists. Since cats are listed as a highly destructive invasive-species it is your civic and moral duty to destroy them on sight.

I would have suggested using a .22 short in a silenced 10/22, but bow hunting is a better idea if you are good enough. Bow hunting is quieter and safer. I personally used a my .22 because it's easiest for me, plus I can shoot out to 100yrds on a good day.

@Jakobie1086 I do love cats. But of course feral cats are problem for: 1) the communities they live in 2)the local wildlife and 3) for the cats themselves. However, studies have shown that killing an entire feral colony doesn't solve the problem because a new colony will inevitably move it. The most effective method is a trap and release program. This sterlizes the current population, thus ensuring there won't be a next generation. This is a more effective, long term solution. Educate yourself.

@Offertory No you're wrong. Even PETA does not advocate TNR. They advocate trapping and euthanizing. The cats are a menace. Neutering them and re-releasing them allows them to continue to predate on indigenous wildlife such as song birds. Feral cats are an artificially introduced predator and they should be eradicated. Continuous eradication will eventually result in the destruction and eventual extinction of the feral cat population.

PETA does endorse euthansia: but ONLY if the community doesn't have the resources to take care of the ferals and manage the colony properly once they are released (such as providing vet care, food, etc). Go read about on the PETA website under Issues. :/ If there are alternatives to killing cats, PETA supports that first.

@conan566 no that would be like killing someones beloved pet and companion, the 3 neutered ferals of which i and one of my neighbors have have released keep other ferals away, kill pidgeons, rats,mice, and basically do a cheap pest control duty around our apartment block in exchange for clean dry outdoor shelters and food once a day. killing them only makes rooom for rats and mice and more unaltered cats to breed.

I usually cover the trap with an old blanket or cardboard box. Then when I catch them I experiment on them.

I try to see if I can attach a tail of one cat to another, pull out teeth and then try to put them back. Just a lot of really helpful stuff to better my understanding of the feline anatomy.

A feral cat is a cat with no owner. A wild cat.

The term feral also applies to any wild or loose, non-native (not indigenous to the area) animal or plant. The animal may have an owner, but if it is running loose it is feral & in my country there is no penalty for destroying that animal in the bush or for trapping it in the city. In fact, most people consider the destruction of ferals to be a community service & ecologically sound practice, which, of course, it is.

I am a participant in the TNR program with the help of a wonderful group here in central Texas. The cats that ued to be fighting each other are now rubbing up against each other and "head butting." So fun to watch. Thank you for your message. I wish more people would get involved and be pro-active.

I assume tnr means trap & release. Here it is illegal. Releasing an animal is considered "dumping", which is a criminal offence.

Besides, if you've gone to all the trouble & expense of trapping a feral, why not just put it down. Cheaper & problem immediately solved.

Here we trap & shoot ferals indiscriminately. (In the cities they must be handed to authorities & discharging firearms is illegal)

All ferals of any species are fair game except in National Parks, unfortunately, so the ferals have a safe haven which is supposed to be devoid of ferals. (the whole point of National Parks being to preserve nature unmolested by any outside influence)

I personally believe that it's more important to get the females as they are the ones producing more ferals.

It costs tax payers more money with holding the cat in a shelter, feeding and vaccinating it only to have it put down and dumped to a land fill or go to schools for dissection. TNR clinics are cheap and do not cause the vacuum effect that TNK does when cats are removed.
