@Mullahgrrl Balony, those things were kept in tune by the guy that owned them and kept new music on them. Most nickelodeons were owned by a route guy and the store owner got a percentage of the "take". If they sounded like that when they were new, who in the right mind would have wasted a nickel listening to them? They were meant to be a draw, not push you out the door to your competitors establishment....
