Its really an amazing film and as I grew up in the bush - there definatly was many elements of truth in some parts of this film - it was a hot harsh hell for the pioneers.. rot gut booze, tinned food, - aboriginal people who terrified some and speared them and whites who calously abused, raped and shot -both white and black very very harsh. the frontier indeed .
Saw this movie about 5 years ago in Australia, had never heard of it and it came on TV, to this day its still my favourite movie. Its worth listening to music by Nick Cave & Warren Ellis in other movies, i.e. the assasination of Jesse James by coward robert ford, and The Road. Both those movies have the same feel as the proposition as well.
Absolutely one of the best films I have ever seen. Riveting, heartbreaking, disturbing, beautiful, violent, brutal, honest and t utterly gripping. This is one of those films that you do not want to stop watching once you get into that first scene.
Highly recommend that everyone get a copy of this for a movie night. You can find it on amazon.com for $10 new. Go get it.
an acoustical testimonial for some sort of strange spiritual alienation. mixed with the abandoned, arid and wrecked scenery from the movie, it truly becomes a way to escape the daily little life of ours, and step into the time of "could have been".
so fucking-lutely breath taking,goose'bumping.. 2:35 "aah...ahh..." on some part's this masterpiece was scary ;O but one of the best westerns i saw in my whole life :>
i thought the movie was absolutely terrible myself; very very dull indeed and the constant repetition of that piece of poetry throughout it was extremely grating and pretentious imo. The only bit I found gripping was where they were flogging the young lad and Ray Winstone is moved to intercede. I thought the soundtrack was exeptional though.
@FightersOnlyMagazine I guess its all about taste really. To some its an extremely daunting and dull experience. To others its an haunting and brutal look at xenophobia, racism, morality along with good and evil. Its an interesting movie, though I can certainly see why you'd find it pretentious. The poem is out of Nick Caves theme for the movie, Nick Cave being a musician and the writer probably thought to including in the movie here and there. So yeah arguably pretentious I guess.
@FightersOnlyMagazine This is an open forum so I must interject. The irony of your comments are amusing. Are you Celtic? Have you experienced conflict and/or the tyranny of the bush? I thought the movie was excellent. Pretentious - you said it. Sowolf honours this piece of art with a considered, critique. You however smoke a lot of pole and are quite possibly scared of your own shadow. Get your testicles out of your Mother's apron and go outside for a look. Sorry for the language but you suck.
I remember my favourite part of this move is when the police translator tells the officer 'They live up there!' about the aboriginal men from the desert high ground.
this movie and the soundtrack are pure genious... who the fuck is baz lurman. this is one of the most brilliant pieces of cinema ever made. worldwide... not just australian
There will be blood was not completely underrated. You know Daniel Day-Lewis won an academy award for that film right? Are you speaking about the soundtrack? It was nominated for a grammy. Both movies I agree had a similar feel to them. But...this deserves as much as attention. Nick Cave is brilliant.
@mrRisperdal seriously? there will be blood underrated?? as far as i remember it was one of if not the most highly regarded film of 2008/09, whereas this WAS actualy underrated cause only real film fans have even heard of it.
Great movie, dare I say, better than True Grit?

When?, said the moon to the stars in the sky
Soon, said the wind that followed him home
Who?, said the cloud that started to cry
Me, said the rider as dry as a bone
How?, said the sun melted the ground
Why?, said the river that refused to run
Where?, said the thunder without a sound
Here, said the rider and took up his gun

Best part is when Ray Winstone's aboriginal servant departs for Christmas and.leaves his shoes at the gate.
This is your world, it ends right here.

The Proposition is one of the best Australian movies I've ever seen. It was perfectly cast and Nick Cave/Warren Ellis hit the music dead-on.
It's a crime that it's so under-rated to the point where it's becoming a cult movie.
