my band teachers teacher played with buddy on guitar and he told us that he was off the beat so buddy picked up the cymbal and threw it at him. he ducked jus in time because buddy could have killed him. but hes okay!
Buddy was a master who played almost every night for more than 60 years with the best musicians that ever lived. He gave this punk a chance to "make it" with the best big band in the world. Buddy helped many people and gave musicians chances where other people wouldn't. He expected them to do a professional job. But, unfortunatly he got some young punks who couldn't do the job. They just complained and whined. I'm glad Buddy talked like that to Them. They deserved it.
If you all like Buddy, also check out another deceased drummer, Louie Bellson origina l from Illinois. Not only was he a great drummer, he was a nice guy and was often invited to the White House he was so well liked!!! Can't such that for Buddy Bitch!!!!
its easy to talk shit when someones dead, but you drummers out there know in your hearts that buddy would rape and ravage you on your own kit.you guys talking about his attitude are not acknowledging that he played 68 of 69 years and would tear you apart, match grip, traditional whatever.so acknowledge the asshole and the genius, they are two in one.
@Newzchspy whos better, ive heard no one better, and please dont respond with george kollias or drummers like that.i admit that im knew to big band and jazz but ive seen buddy rich murder great great drummers like ed shaunessy, louie bellson, gene krupa ect.ive checked out zach hill and other guys who are great but know one ive ever seen comes close to the open channel, freestyle feel, if you will... than buddy rich.i dont care if he was rude.ill gaurantee he murders you on the drums also.
@bluefukingreene he aint murdering anyone..................................his legacy lives on BUT there are better today, match grip or not, Neal Peart is one good example and he's no jazz drummer......................
@Newzchspy i appreciate neal peart but come on dude, neal has 10 times the kit and still cant fuck with buddys snare work, never mind the feel, technique, and innovation, sounds like you hate a man that you never knew, and bringing neal peart to the table isnt a good argument at all.neal is great but he would even tell you that hes not on buddys level, theirs a clip of buddy playing louie bellsons 2 bass drums, bass drums only, you should hear that and then regroup with another guy cause neal wont do.
@Newzchspy i agree hes a badass, not a fan of his band but he is very skilled.ive been checking out louie bellson what a drummer that dude is or was, dont know if hes dead or not.sorry if i came off rude or as too much of a fanboy for buddy but i recently descovered this man after 25 years of drumming myself and hes impacted me more than anybody else,my main influences prior to him were gene hoglan, sean rienart, dave lombardo, tim alexander, nick menza, stewart copeland, john densmore, bohnam, ect.
@bluefukingreene@bluefukingreene He was the greatest drummer of "his time." and in his "genre." Definitive/conclusive statements never work. No one is questioning his supreme talent, BUT a statement that he is the greatest of all time is akin to saying that Michael Jordan was/is. History ain't over yet ...............................His snare work was unparalleled, agreed, BUT that's not all there is to "drumming." Its like saying, whats better, an apple or an orange? Both are fruits
Honestly, its a different time these days. its NOT unprofessional to demand perfection from your musicians AT ALL, and if a living legend like Buddy Rich wanted to go about it in an agressive way, so be it. as for THESE DAYS, was terminator that much sweeter because Christian Bale flipped shit on a lighting guy, highly doubtful. its one thing to be an asshole, but an entirely other world when you're a person who deserves perfection in their art form. in the end, only time tells these thing
@Johhnycashmonkey I agree with you, BUT he was consistently an asshole and this wasnt the first time.............many of his bandmembers hated him................Did he care? Probably yes, BUT his ego was too big to apologize for that!!

Any of you assholes that don't respect Mr.Rich as the best that ever walked this planet don't know a drum stick from your tiny little pecker!!All he ever asked was that the people in is band work as hard as him. So go fiddle with your cheesy electronics you ignorant mother fuckers!!!!
If anyone deserved to rant like that, it was him. The guy is still the greatest drummer that ever lived (although I sure wanted to be in that band... YIKES!!!)
There is no way he is the greatest drummer. drumming is feeling and he sure as hell had that down. BUT in a technical sense... just because he banged the bottom of his hi hat does not make him GREAT. he is not to be revered like that. Maybe he was (for us older folks) looked up to, admired?
I could give you a few. Gadd, Adler,Copeland,Bozzio,Pert what do you consider GREAT? Buddy Rich (maybe not the person) but the people who revere him need to be pissed on.
Perfectionist, old school style. Buddy didn't take any crap from the audience either. In fact, when he opened "Buddy's Place" in NYC, the thing he wanted everybody to know was that it was going to be a place where the audience came to listen to the band, not talk while they were playing. He knew the band could play the charts; what he wanted is what every maestro wants: the full attention of the band to get every cue done perfectly.
I don't think I've EVER heard of one musician who worked with Buddy Rich liking him, except for amateur drummer Johnny Carson (day job: the Tonight Show). Buddy Rich gave Carson a drumset - and Carson was actually a surprisingly good jazz drummer.
@AarHan3 Bobby Knight did his dirty work on national and international TV. Another piece of work, but where is he today? Playing Golf, otherwise disappeared.
I used to take drum lessons from Bob McKee in Cleveland and he said he used used to jam with Buddy Rich all the time. He said he was the biggest piece of shit asshole he's ever met.
I used to have a whole tape of this; I worked for a jazz label and my boss gave it to me on the first day of work. I'm pissed I can't find it. "I have a mansion in Beverly Hills, I can just sit on my ass and not have to pay you and hear your CLAMS every night." The best was when he threatened the band member for having a beard. "If you show up to the gig tonight and I catch the fuckin beard on you, I'll throw you off my stage."
After Buddy died, phone rings at his home. Lady answers. Gentleman asks - " Is Buddy there?" Lady says "No, I'm sorry - Buddy died." Gentlemen says "Thank you " and hangs up. Next day, phone rings again. Same question: " Is Buddy there?". Same answer
This goes on for a week. Finally the lady says. " I know you. you played in Buddy's band. You've called everyday asking for Buddy. Don't you understand? Buddy is dead!"
Gentlemen says: " Oh I understand. I just never get tired of hearing it"
@tonespinner hahahahaha....good one. I don't care who you are or how good you are, you don't get to abuse people. In my business I have met many famous musicians - Tony Levin, bass player for King Crimson and Peter Gabriel, Omar Hakim, who drummed for Madonna and Sting, Robben Ford, and numerous others. What they had in common was that they were humble gentlemen, who knew there was always somebody "better" and somebody worse, and that they were on a long journey of exploration. None of this shit
so funny. buddy was the best, and expected the best. its that simple. "one clam and this whole fucking band is through tonight. try me!... fuck all of you!"
If you thought that was harsh you should probably put a Bandaid on your bleeding heart. He didn't come to play drums and have fun. He came to be the BEST!!!
@manjaganj . Well, he came to be the best, but I don't think he wanted to spend one ounce of time trying to make the others better. He was the best, maybe, but it was all about HIM, nobody else. A good Video Response, maybe even Buddy's identical twin, try "Alec Baldwin - Best performance" on Youtube, from the movie Glengarry Glen Ross. Almost the same script, certainly the same personality.
I have worked for too many of these types to know the problem and the cure.
Where does Buddy say, we are going to work this out, we are going to practice this till we get it down!
No, instead of rehearsing the tunes, its all intimidation, like fear will cure the problem. "Practice makes perfect", not "fear makes perfect". Even George Patton would tell individuals what the hell they were doing wrong, and hold exercises till everybody got it right.
@dogupabonetree My middle school music teacher played clarinet for him for awhile and also said he was one of the nastiest men she has ever met, and that he regularly fired people.
alot of these comments on BUDD,Y ARE WAY OFF- HE Commanded the Best out of himself, w/ aPASSION MOST dRUMMERS IF NOT OTHERS CANT fIND ,He demanded The Best out of His Players ;Thats called EXTREME SUCCESS*.GETIT GOTIT GOOD!!!!!!
I am outraged that this guy rips apart his band. A sign of a true musician is one that doesn't show his ego. Good thing I wasn't playing in his band....I'd shove my guitar up this motherfucker's ass.
Yeah, it's bad behavior but a LOT of true musicians are temperamental. I think one difference is that this isn't a band of equals, it's Buddy Rich the boss and a bunch of guys he hires to play with him. I love music but you do run into talented assholes.

buddy didnt like weakness in his band he was like a football coach if a guy fucked up he let him know about
he didnt sugarcoat anything if says the band sucked then they sucked and you took it on the chin.
lots of members in his band were lazzy and buddy would get them in shape even if he had to yell at them.
