  • I'll just go against the trend and say that the Mulsanne Straight is over glorified. If they had not added the chicances, they might have required to do something else, perhaps much more considerable changes to the track later.

The speeds might require more balls, but eventually, braking, turning and accelerating again requires more skill than just going full throttle all the time.

I'd rather complain about the loss of Dunlop Bridge in 2002.

  • @deggis4

    you have a point

But ask guys who do the bonneville speedweeks on how much skill it takes to stay flat out for a long period of time. On top of that your mind is telling you "hey you're going way too fast sloooooow down".

  • this is where the term "balls or steel" came from lol

  • i like the sound of the dump valve from the turbo lol

  • it has a 2.65 L turbocharged Flat-6, producing approximately 635 hp. go v6 power!

  • good lord, everything's going past so fast!:O

  • OMG!

  • BEAST MODE!

  • beautiful

  • no chicanes! yeaaaaaaaaaaa

  • yes i liked Brain Redman with his natural jolliness personality,

always on the light side of thing's.

and too Derek Bell is a really nice person, always therer to help in a situation. or give some good advice.

the Part on the mulsanne look's like at least 230MPH ,

only other footage that's good is the Martini Porsche 936 at Le Man's In 77 with Jurgen Barth driving.

like to see stuff like this with older Ferrari's,Or Alfa Romeo's. Or Matra's.

  • The camera has tunnel vision lol

  • Nice brakes

  • This is about 5000 times better than F1!!!

  • @Schnuffituut 5000 times faster aswell :D

  • @Schnuffituut its also 5,000,000 times better than nascar lol

  • @Schnuffituut Only 5000? :o)

  • Its insane how fast it is compared to the other LMP cars

  • im canadian so GIV'R!!!

  • To everybody complaining about modern drivers being pussies: go watch the Rockenfeller crash (the live version) from this year's race.

  • Porsche and Ferrari should just make LMP1 cars for lemans it would spice things up a bit

  • @ghalloikbenhet You know that Porsche has already (officially) announced its plan to come back in 2014? :p

  • @deggis4 no i didnt, thnx for that

  • is the video sped up? :S it looookksss sooooo fastttt

  • agree, racing drivers these days are all panzies......real motor racing stopped the second Senna crashed and killed himself. Cheers mate!

  • It takes a heck of a person to drive the old Le Mans circuit. Incredible

  • That gives a taste of just how dangerous the Mulsanne was. 250MPH and if anything breaks or goes wrong , you'll be 2 postcodes away when it all ends. Wow , those were the days. I've met Derek Bell , and a more charming man you will not meet. Don't stand too close though , you'll catch cold from the ice in his veins

  • @mrhearse777 They should have left it alone. It was part of the aura of LeMans.

  • Comment removed

  • It has an interesting sound when changing gears. Anyway, that's friggin' insane, I had no idea they did such speed at Le Mans ...

  • @djbanizza

The sound when changing gears come from the blow-off valves of the turbochargers!

  • Who is driving?

  • @gnarkillkicksass : The name is "Derek Bell"

  • @jawangnese Thanks!

  • Man the Mulsanne Straight should return. Take away the Bloody Chicanes.

  • it look like its oversteer very much

  • Which car is the fastest between a Porsche 956 sport-prototype and a Bugatti Veyron Supercar ?

  • @SpaceCelte One is a world dominating race car, the other a $1,000,000 VW built in France that needs new tyres if you do ever hit 400KPH. I'd say straight line, probably the same. Around a race track the 2.5 tonne VW Veryon would be left behind and there is no way it would ever operate in the same conditions for 24 hours.

  • @SpaceCelte lol what do you think?

  • @runatrain

I think Porsche 956 is fastest than Bugatti Veyron.

  • @SpaceCelte Le Mans specs change very often

  • @SpaceCelte

lol , is a 10x faster man... is a pure racing car, veyron is only a sport car.

  • Yeah I know you all miss the full length Molson straight. But if it were there the cars would be hitting 300mph and we would have far fewer cars (and drivers) for next years race. The FIA is not clueless.

  • @StreetBikerBrazil They already did it a little when they created that new part after the 1st corner, and changed the last chicanne to a tighter one. But if you´re talking about the north classic track, I think that people will burn FIA buildings if they try it.

  • i just creamed my pants.

    pure audio joy

  • @StreetBikerBrazil so true buddy.

  • @StreetBikerBrazil agreed.

  • Great...

  • turbo sound humm

  • I'm no Porsche fan, but this car is just surreal.

  • @HigherEnlightment how could you don't be a fan of Porsche???

    sacrilege!!!

  • it's a shame what happened to racing :-(

  • pissed myself just watching this.

  • @StreetBikerBrazil

You're damn right ! No more pilot like the good old days and no more cars like before !! Who care about there fucking diesel powered cars !!

Hope the Ring still be the Ring !!

  • Bastard CO2-terrorist.

  • @StreetBikerBrazil yeahh i agre with you but all that thinks are made about safely didi yiu know how many people have died in Nürbugring ... a lot and year by year the the cars became faster they HAVE to make something to race fast with safely for example this year in le mans (2011) a audi crashed if were no safely the driver sure will died

  • @StreetBikerBrazil fucking true!!!!! F.I.A. mafia!!!!!

  • 1:32 - "Fuck it, radio is only playing shit today!" *insert CD*

    :D WOW THAT SPEED

  • How much long is the straight line?

  • @SkyWallk3r1 : Look @ Video Info.

    Straight : 5 km o.O

  • @SkyWallk3r1 Le Mans is a race where up to 85% of the time is spent on full throttle and the strait is 6 kilometers long!

  • @SkyWallk3r1

It's about 5km I think. Simply measure the time and take 370 km/h as average speed, it'll give you the lenght.

Good old time is dead, thanks to the FIA.

  • @SkyWallk3r1 Exactly 6km or 3.7 miles.

  • @StreetBikerBrazil FIA has absolutely nothing to do with Le Mans :) it's ruled entirely by A.C.O, and the long strech got closed becasuse the the "jump" near the end, that sent more than one car flying out into the woods with extreme danger as a result. But i totally agree with you about FIA ruining motorsport with insane amounts of rules.

  • @AIRDRAC "FIA has absolutely nothing to do with Le Mans :)"

Funny timing =). FIA World Motor Sport Council's decision taken yesterday: "In partnership with the Automobile Club de L’Ouest (ACO), an FIA World Endurance Championship will be created in 2012. The calendar, comprising at least six events, will include the Le Mans 24 Hours. FIA World Endurance Championship titles will be awarded to Constructors and Drivers."

    This is major news. =)

  • @deggis4 I that indeed is major (and disturbing) news! I hope they mean that they get to have their own race on La Sarthe, instead of taking over the real race! If that is the case then i'm happy that i'm going this year, as it will be the last real LM! :( Also: are they planning to use the entire road-circuit, or just the inner racetrack?

  • @AIRDRAC Ehmm... don't worry. There is still going to be just one 24h Le Mans. It's already part of the ACO-run Intercontinental Le Mans Cup and that was now granted a World Championship status. Not much is going to change except that this is going to hugely boost the prestige and give a reason for manufacturers and teams to race whole year instead of just two weeks of fame in June.

  • Balls of Steel!...Nuffield said, bloody mind-blowing, wish I could have witnessed this for real!...Rock on!

  • @smoceskreen If the displacement or amount of cylinders defines the pinnacleness of motorsport, then F1 has never been the pinnacle in the first place. By the way, one of the most powerful F1 engines ever is BMW's shitty 1.5L 4-cylinder from the 80s.

  • Comment removed

  • @smoceskreen I said one of the most powerful and it is, even if you only look at quoted race trim figures. Certain website says 850-900 bhp in 1987. With today's know-who, that wouldn't even be hard to achieve. Anyway, the point wasn't how much that engine made. My point was that the rule change shouldn't be bashed just because our mothers' cars has 4 cylinders.

  • @deggis4 ok ok don't get mad man. i just don't like the idea of having something smaller when you're already used to the sheer noise of the bigger V10s and V8s. it's like trading an F430 for a Civic. Ok we'll just wait and see then. Peace.

  • @StreetBikerBrazil Nostalgy + populism = lots of thumbsups at Youtube.

  • Comment removed

  • @StreetBikerBrazil haha yeah i agree, they even killed off rally's mother-of-them-all Group B. safety this safety that, that's why in 2013 we're gonna have puny 1.5 4 cylinders in F1! Crap, screw FIA for taking away the FUN of racing!

  • @StreetBikerBrazil AAAW MAN!!! I feel spooky at the moment... after your post I will sleep bad tonight... And BTW you forgot about stupid flappy gearbox with 2000 computer assistants, fully adjustable car from the steering wheel. The only question is WHAT THE FU*K THE PILOT IS DOING IN THE COCKPIT?!! ADVERTISING SPONSORS?!!

  • wat abt breaking....400 to 100 in 2 sec...:):) speed..

  • Simply breath taking!

  • When this video ended i hit my heat on the monitor.

  • This is so great...I watch this all the time. I feel cheated watching racing today....

  • Cool video. How fast are you going?

  • @wickedsmart Says in the information that top speed is around 400kph, or around 250mph!

  • @Smurugby12 Information is dubious. Top speed ever reached by a Porsche of any type at Le Mans was 391kmh (243mph) by H.J.Stuck in a 962. In 1983 the top speed was about 360 (224mph). It's not a question of power so much as gearing. This car is going plenty fast but probably not doing more than 350kmh. Certainly not 400.

  • This is just brilliant. Porsche must have commissioned film clips to be done at several circuits during the year with Dereck Bell doing the driving. They are now available on a DVD. They show the enormous skill these drivers have. Total respect.

  • Surreal; Love it!

  • @StreetBikerBrazil

    True Word´s man :)

  • WoW , Thats so fast o.O

    :)

  • @jawangnese whats the engine on this car? it sounds turbo charged

  • Like this if you fast forward to 0:32

  • Absolutely mega!!! Todays cars are shit.

  • I agree with duka92Dr1ft3R; "you drivers may hurt yourselves! Let's put in a chicaine every 2km so you don't get going too fast...in your RACING CARS!" Reminds me of NASCAR! Let's restrict the engines so they can only go 180mph at Talladega, because as you know, crashing at 180 is SO MUCH SAFER than at 200! Idiots! If you're gonna be a bear, BE A GRIZZLY! The whole world is fucking chickenshit these days!!

  • @deeze67. these cars dont run a bov. never did. just the sound of the air returning out the front of the turbo. Not harmful despite what many experts will tell you

  • Thanks for posting, that is awesome, phenomenal speed on the straight, didnt look like he backed off for the dogleg either

  • that sound is wonderful. i watched my steve mcqueen le mans dvd for the umpteenth time yesterday and hadnt realised how similar the 917 and 956 were in sound. hardly surprising i suppose.

  • The best race track! Here are some of my videos on Le mens track:

    /watch?v=CZi2FzfBnEA

    /watch?v=0poS9wNDIl0

    /watch?v=iXEKGaYAuCs

    /watch?v=NyRrvnXL3zM

  • You can say goodbye to any more major safety inventions thanks to the FIA and their ridiculous 2km straight rule now too. Among many other things, seatbelts were invented because of this race.

  • Amazing, absolute balls of steel to do that hour after hour!

  • love the cheeky lil wastegate! :)

  • cool race)

  • omg that hayabusa 278mph from texasmile should run on this 5km straight

  • What kind of engines did these have?

  • @Jury1111111111

Flat six, 2.65 Ltr , dohc per bank, twin turbo, about 620 BHP. Weight of car about 840 KG.

They ran with high ground effect downforce. Epic cars.

  • @Jury1111111111 2.7 litre single turbo flat 6 ( based on the 901 series engine as used in 911s )

  • Blow off valve just rules on this one!

  • thank you, thank you for not adding music to this video...

  • Can you believe Kenny Acheson ran a 408 kph radar timed on the straight before the last breaking spot in a Mercedes C-9, a feroucious car as was the C-11

  • Comment removed

  • WOW! That speed must be intoxicating!

  • nice blow off sound

  • holy crap that is a long straight. This vid makes me want to say "chicane" with a British accent.

  • This is my favorite vid on all of YouTube, I've watched it many times!! I believe this is with Derek Bell driving. I was fortunate to meet him briefly a few years ago, very nice chap. Oh the adventures that guy has seen! I've driven at 175 mph for mere seconds and that was enough...

  • yeah, 240+ mph with very little downforce on these cars - can you say "Yeehaw"? - I like the chicanes - no reason to let the cars go any faster than 215 mph unless you want someone to all of a sudden have a flat and get killed because the car couldn't stop quick enough. Despite it being a really fun ride to flying for 3.5 miles, these short to get up to 215 mph straights before braking makes for interesting passing opportunities as the cars go into the chicanes and gun it on the way out.

  • I never get sick of this video.

  • @nismodave57 You got that right!!!!!

  • Prolly been mentioned before, but this video is also being served up as a 917 doing a lap of Le Mans. Which is it?

  • @tapmad 956

  • Derek Bell got nine lives. He is lucky he never got hurt all those years in racing.

  • Martin Brundle said once that the whole length Mulsanne was horrible, it was boring and you just sat flat out at 240mph and waited for a tyre to let go. Tyres blowing out on the Mulsanne was quite a common problem due to the massive centrifugal forces on the tyres going flat out for so long

  • You'd have trouble counting the white lines down the mulsanne straight!!

  • @squidword64 Man I wouldn't be able to count that fast...lol

  • A lap time of 3:25.1 (239.169 km/h) was set in 1985, so this video with the car starting from the old pit area is running at the right speed.

  • Again, I admit it I was the clueless one. Please no offense meant I must have been in a bad state of mind to post my original (1st) post. Sorry...

For those doubting my statement about racing a Porsche you can check out a video I have posted "RGD's 85 Carrera". It's my first laps in my car blabla... Never said I owned a fast car.

  • Besides the Mulsanne chicane problem, I pity those poor young 'uns that have never seen what an unrestricted turbo, or pair of, can do. We might have even seen the return of superchargers too, if that whole 'too fast' fiasco hadn't taken place. Wouldn't that be interesting!

  • awesome vid,thanks for this

  • Yep you guys are right I'm the clueless one. Sorry my mistake!

  • Sorry Pintac87 didn't mean to offend. You may be a "real race car fan" that's great! However this video is not set at normal speed, it is speeded up. I am sure if you do a little research here you will find other videos of the same road course at normal speed. Apologize for the term clueless, guess the retard comment is fair.

By the way, I own and race a Porsche. So I'm wondering, do I qualify as a real race fan or do I need to do something more?

  • @rgdtoo21 - the video is not sped up, you can tell by his non-sped up hand movements. :) I think the main reason it looks sped up is because the car is extremely low, which provides an even greater sensation of speed, not to mention this car is bloody fast. Perhaps you should try doing 350+ kph eh? ;)

    Just clarifying. ;)

  • @rgdtoo21 The other videos you refer to are more modern cars. The modern track has more chicanes on the straight hence is slower. The 956 is still one of the fastest cars to blat down Mulsanne.

  • I'm sorry but this video is so jacked up. Looks like he's doing 400mph. Give me a break! Your clueless if you think this is what actual track speed looks like.

  • @rgdtoo21 I've got the DVD, it looks exactly the same. You're the one that's clueless.

  • @rgdtoo21 it does if your in a real car

  • @rgdtoo21 Pardon me but you are fucking retarded. Go back to watching NASCAR and let the real race car fans enjoy one of the greatest race cars of all times.

  • Imagine doing this for a few hours at a stretch - after one lap like this I'd need a stiff drink and clean underwear! And they say that astronauts are brave!

  • @Superedit Yeah, I'd still have to say that astronauts are a lot braver than this.

  • @Superedit Derek Bell actually said that this was a chance to relax slightly on each lap!

  • @Superedit I would jump on a rocket and to the moon anyday if i could but if i was the driver of that car i just wouldnt have the balls to keep my foot down lol i wud get to 70 stop then cry for my mom lol

  • lol going 200 at 0:50 but still scratching his nose lol

  • nice way to spend a day at work, that shit never gets boring.

  • I'm lost for words.....what i would do to have been a racing driver during the 70's 80's and even early 90's......

  • i disagree old track was boring, straight was to long, yes its cool to go that fast but it would get boring after a while

  • @TougeCL1 Oh yeah? Try it on PS3 with an Audi R8 Prototype against equally fast cars. Talk about a rush! I can only see it getting boring if yours is the only car on the track, but actually racing against other talented drivers is a diffrent story.

  • Nothing can beat the achievement made by 956/962. They're the most successful race car in the racing history.

  • Man the old track is much better!!!

  • @ 0:46 casual nose scratch @ 150mph

  • Amen.

  • @TheRooster94 i will agree with u but at the same time i don't because" i know people hate when people say this the future is not that bright for fossil fuel" so finding another fuel other than electricity is a necessity so its a good thing but it does take away a bit of excitement away from the sport

  • Those cars look like they're standing still when this monster comes rolling by <3

  • 614 bhp

    flat 6 turbocharged,

amazing they got that much power from a relatively weak engine

  • Those races back then were magic on the circuits, you would have real, unabridged power-house supercars racing each other until the last 10th of a second. Nowadays its just those eco-nut diesels ruining the soul of the sport.

  • *tool time grunt*

  • I would give anything to go back in time to watch these races. This was when real men raced real cars on a real track. Racing across the board has went downhill in the last 20 years. F1 is still ok to a degree. As long as there are ignorant people in charge of making the rules you will have crappy racing. Diesel technology is awesome but it's nauseating to constantly see them win. I want to see (and hear!!) a turbo-charged monster screaming down Mulsanne again!!!!!

  • le mans 90s are the best shit of FIA

  • instead to put 2 chicanes FIA could put one, the second chicane before that small corner

  • @joelmafonso are yo crazy !? do you know how many mph did they got before ? it was too dangerous

  • @GTplayer77 yes i know over 400 km/h and so... they have few accidents in the straight but at least they never fly like some modern race cars..

and actually they are some tracks with turns much more dangerous than mulsanne straight . for example eau rouge..
