Weeee, im drivin mah super cool american truck.... Oh look, there's a little bit of snow... Oh, I got stuck in my great american truck, but wait... Lock teh hubs... Let's see now... Oh noes broke my U-joint... Cool truck man...
@CORVAIRWILD I found the older I get, the more easily people accept my insanity.
Sounds to me that you don't see any crazy snow in your part of the country. When I was younger, we used to keep a snowblower in the second floor spare bedroom. After a good 2 day storm, I would have to push the snowblower out the second floor window and slowly dig my way down to the bulldozer so I could plow the driveway. That was snow.
@CORVAIRWILD I've never driven a Jeep, either Liberty or or Cherokee. Why more diesels aren't sold, or why more people don't buy diesel-powered SUVs is beyond me. They get better fuel economy and also provide more torque for towing.
perhaps people just don't want to bother paying more for upkeep and regular maintenance on a diesel? I wouldn't know I've always driven gas vehicles except for my grandfathers 18 wheeler, now thats a monster on maintenance
@hunterfleet That seems to be the case. It's too bad, too. You want to be able to go farther than a bicycle or walking will get you, but we're unable or unwilling to spend the money and things begin to deteriorate.
You're an odd one bud. Sucks about that U-joint, I would suspect that applying the brakes to had a little something to do with the death of the joint, but sometimes you gotta use em in situations like this so...good luck with that D60 conversion!
If you only had one failure, I might just blame fatigue from the combination of the desiel torque & the plow(even tho it did not actually break while plowing, it could have cracked then), but I think you have had at least 2 failures close together? Which would indicate another problem or maybe that axle just ain't up to the job. I seem to think from one of your other vids that you are considering a bigger axle, which would certainly fix the problem.
If that was the original stock ujoint, I -could- see the plow + desiel doing that over time. but not to a Dana 60. :) I never used MM parts, it just looked like it should have engaged more. When I have hubs, they are usually locked 24/7, unless I have a driveline problem. I almost broke my CJ hubs, but I upgraded before they failed, the cracks were very visible.
poor blazer poor corvairwild lol my toyota would just drive ova top of the sno but its got bad rusty junk chassie n would snap tryna get off oh wait it did snap pos at least ur truck didnt snap like mine lol dont buy a rusty 84 hilux
mine have a bit of play from when you put it in forward then in revers it will kinda clunk when the axles spin and lock the hubs again and when you stuck and you kick in the auto hubs you put it in 4L so the axles spin slow when the hubs lock or youll lose your teeth on the steering wheel
my mom has a 00' ford rusty bucket. it has auto hubs. they failed in both directions. sucks. auto hubs are great.but they dont have the strength as the manual hubs
The white Sub would take two batteries, they're back home on da charger, and it won't strat without being pluggged in, glo plugs not all working, and the black Sub has better tires
the 10 bolts don't like those 33" tires. The POS on had 31's not as hard on the axles. Be sure to buy a spicer ujoint to put in, they are the strongest. You should throw the 1 ton axles under it from the 3500 srw.
he can you answer me this? what axles would my 1985 GMC sierra classic 1500 4wd with the 6.2 diesel and a 4 speed standard with overdrive have underit i wanna jack it up 6 inches and throw on some 35's and a banks kit
Most likely you've got 10 bolts, If you can find a set of axles from a 3/4 ton you can swap in a 14bolt rear and 10 bolt front They both bolt right up. Or get a set from a 1 ton for 14 bolt rear and dana 60 front. The 1 ton 14 bolt rear will have to have the spring perches moved to bolt in. 10 bolt front will survive for a while on 35's if you are easy on it. I'd swap in 3/4 ton axles. Get rid of the 10 bolt rear, If you snap an axle your tire will fall off.
Yea for the front 3/4 and 1/2 ton are the same. I think some 3/4 10 bolts may have thicker axle tubes. The 1 ton frames are different so the spring perches don't line up. I say run 3/4 ton axles with 35s cause a dana 60 is so expensive. My main concern is the beefing up the rear axle, You can limp home with a broken front but there's nothing to hold the wheel on if you break a 10 bolt rear axle shaft.
Thicker axle? Hmmm I'll ask CK5. I have a 1 ton, but so rusty! I should part it out for the Blazer. I agree 'bout the full floating rears! I have a few, but local rusty. I'll need to sanblast, change rear backing plate, 'cause they're the older bolt on emerg cables... Diff style... More work! Or just stay outta' da snow!!!
Your 85 will have a 10 bolt front differential and a 12 bolt rear differential. 6" lift is easy -- Shackle flip out back, springs up front. Blocks == BAD! Banks turbo = good!
I ran 35" boggers on my 1/2 ton differentials and never had a problem with it.
sweet once i get some money ill order my stuff and ill have one hell of a truck i got it stuck in about 7 inches of water and ice today threw it in 4X4 (thank god for auto hubs or my feet woulda got mighty cold) and i backed up then she roared right through
I've never liked auto hubs, but I really can't say too much as I never owned them, but I got a funny story about them. At a race track spectator parking I had my 93 firebird backed way up a grass hill. a 3/4 ton 4x4 tried backing up where I was but couldn't do it cause his auto hubs wouldn't engage and his rear tires just spun on the grass. It was all the drivers fault tho, he was spinning the tires so fast the hubs couldn't engage, I could hear them racheting, lol.
Welcome to my world ! Ha !
