Watched all three videos, and these are the only ones you will ever need to watch to learn how to clean your revolver. Thank you very much from a new S and W 686 owner.
Oh cool! I had forgotten that you had this 686 P. I just purchased a 4" 686P (pick it up on Tuesday). Are you still enjoying it a couple of years later? Looks like a beautiful handgun.. Also, have you tried shooting any buffalo bore 180 gr. through it? I've got a backpacking trip coming up and I'll be bringing this as a small bear gun, so I'm curious about that load. Thanks for the great video!
I tend to stay away from any abrasive (even micro-abrasive) products. A nylon brush may help but you are scratching the metal on a microscopic level. Also... it looks like you're being very careless when cleaning this gun... banging the nylon brush around... i saw you stick that mop down the barrel not being EXTREMELY careful.. you can scratch the inside of the barrel with that metal tip on the mop! GO SLOWLY AND BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL!
@xeotech1 It's a tough handgun. You're not trying to do live surgery on an earthworm. It's a stainless steel weapon that will fire after it's dropped on concrete or abused in many different ways. It's a tool, Cleanliness i important, but treating it like it's a baby chick on life support is ridiculous.
Wow, thank you so much for the Birchwood Casey Lead-removing cloth tip. We bought a 686 with a 3" barrel recently and just couldn't get the face of the cylinder clean without scrubbing with a brass brush. Thanks for the tip! Happy Shooting.
Hi there i have seen another vid of a 686 7 shot here on utube but his cylinder did not have the grooves on the outer cylinder body and your does? would it be hard to reconfigure a 6 shot 686 to a 7 shot ? please tell me details when u can :)
@2black2day Yes, putting the dirty brush back into the cleaner is not the smartest thing I have ever done, but I honestly think the cleaner is fine as long as I don't do it often. I don't recommend doing it either, thank you for pointing this out.
I picked up one of those polishing cloths for my S&W, and it made a HUGE difference... but it makes me a *little* concerned. Most polishing compounds have a small amount of very fine abrasive incorporated in them. Just like a polishing rouge, or rubbing compound for your car.
.
It does a great job of removing the carbon, but I'm guessing that if it is rubbing off the carbon, it's also removing a small amount of metal off.
I have to quote Frynbender " i have never been able to get all the black off the front of the cylinder untill now, those cloths work a treat, it now looks like the day i bought it thanks for the tip"
Actually I have been able to clean the cylinder face, but it usually takes many many hours of brushing with a wire brush. NOW I can simply wipe it down. What is in that cloth...? All I can say is that I am now able to shoot my revolvers without the worry of lengthy clean up. Thanks so much.

Nice Videos - try out VFG products to clean the barrel and the cylinder which are made from felt...you will safe a lot of time and will do no damage to the gun.
I'm with you it's good to get the rough stuff out and then clean thoroughly.I like the fact that on revolvers you can come up from the back of the barrel..Thank you for the great vid.
That cloth works great.I've seen them before but never bought one. I will now. Thanks for the tip.Have you ever tried the Hoppe's bore snake. I think there great for cleaning revolvers. Thanks.
I like and use Bore Snake too however, I've found that if a use a patch after the Bore Snake it still comes out dirty. I general use my Bore Snakes as part of my cleaning process but not a total replacement. I also use it at the range to run through the bore between every 100 rounds. Thank you very much for watching and commenting.
It's actually pronounced 'HOP-EEZ'; not to seem like a pompous ass, just for future references.

I have to agree with a previous post, why would you put a DIRTY brush back into the bottle of cleaner? Is that bottle not now contaminated?
If I and the previous poster are wrong please let me/us know.

@Rhinoch8 That would harm your firearm
