Well, there would have been many writen accounts, and they had some early recording technology back then, but they wouldn't have really needed a recording, since someone could have just written "passenger pigeon sounds like [whatever bird it sounds like]".
Why all the hype about a damn pigeon? There's still billions of pigeons all around the world. Just look around in any city they crap on everything!!!
