The average traditional kung fu masters from the 1700's were 20-25 times a strong as Mike Tyson. Back when kung fu was important for survival they took it very serious and trained to very high levels.
@MuayThaiViking He was undefeated in 300 some odd matches all over a country where almost all fighting was done by hand or with hand held weapons. So very well, particuarly if it were no holds barred.
@woodwalk who did he fight, and do you have any real sources? any competitions he competed in or news paper articles? or is it just rumors and the usual myths with no credibility
but as far as i know, they dont train ground fighting in that style. so that would definitely be a must before he even tried mma
@MuayThaiViking Try reading a book sometime, it would do you some good. He is a fairly well researched historical figure but has been dead for a good while.
@woodwalk i simply ask for some sources and you try to make a personal attack on me, making it sound as if i never read books. good job! your lack of answer to my simple question is pretty much an answer in itself :)
@MuayThaiViking , No, I just don't care to do your research for you. China is a society obsessed with record keeping and Sun is a fairly famous historical figure. Just do a google search.
@MuayThaiViking Do you even know the name of "that style?" If you really knew anything about Chinese GongFu, you'd know that nearly all styles have Chin Na applications; wrestling, grappling, and jointlock moves.
"MuayThaiViking," sounds like a man determined to make himself seem a legend. Maybe just another troll trying to run the pointless age old argument of "which style is superior." A true master of any style is someone not to mess with, whether it be as soft as Taiji or as hard as Hung Gar
@MuayThaiViking Try "Asian Fighting Arts" by R. Smith and D. Draeger. You'll get some good insight, historical and cultural, on how fights in China were made in those times. China and elsewhere.
To give you an idea, fights were (or could be) to death. If a challenger asked for a fight to death, the owners of the school challenged could not refuse. So the main question is rather : how would do mma sportsmen then ?
Sun Jianyun had many students, including some westerners. If you are in the UK and want to learn the style contact Dave Martin as he studied with Sun Jianyun over a thirteen year period and was one of her "inside the door" students.
Does anybody know if there were any grandchildren that are practitioners of the internal arts alive today?, it would be really sad if his line has died out, it would be nice to know that there is still something left of this great man here in this world, a man who despite his incredible skill remained very humble til the end, a lesson for us all me thinks.
@thrillseeker70 Well, Sun style definitely is not dead. It may be not a big s Yang style, but there are still people practicing it.
There were some biological grandchildren of Sun Lutang that also taught his style, but in general nowadays the styles are not only passed on in the family.
Master Sun is probably the best, he mastered completely the 3 major internal arts, which is almost impossible in a lifetime. He mastered taiji in as little as 4 years ! He learned under the best masters of his generation : guo yun shen, cheng ting hua. The sad thing is he couldn't produce a high-level student for his succession. Only his son sun Cunzhou was good and now there's no real master in the sun style.
Quite possibly the greatest martial artist of all time. The martial arts world is a better place for his development of Sun Style tai chi, my favorite style of tai chi.
thank you for posting this it is clear that ba qua hsing yi and tai chi were incorporated in the Sun style it is a unifying aspect of three internal sisters Peace
He is the greatest martial artist in the history. I am glad to see his Tai Ji here. I wish I could able to learn any martial arts from his daughter or son. Unfortunately , both of them passed away.

But overall, that question is absurd.
