They actually went over-budget and had to cut most of the opening animation, which is why it's mostly clips from the series. The DVD version has the completed opening animation, which is a LOT more exciting.

This is a good anime, keeping it light and yet relatively faithful to Kendo (Compared to other sport animes like Eyeshield and Prince of Tennis). Also the characters are well done and really make the anime something remarkable

I think that if you are able to use a katana good than you are probably able to beat a lot of people when you start kendo and you would probably be able to use it with just one hand instead of two because a regular katana or sword is way heavier than a katana, lifing a katana is probably 2-3 times heavier

kendo is cool and good exercise, but if you're learning a martial skill for protection then fencing trumps it hands down. Thrusts and feints are always more effective and efficient than a slicing motion. Then again, if you needed protection in today's world, i doubt you'd have a katana/rapier handy 24/7, in which case learn karate or another unarmed art. Or buy a gun lol.

@Tyfosken Hm, I'd agree with you, but against people with armor, kendo would be more effective. xD Although true, learning some sort of swordplay technique is redundant nowadays .... Kinda sad, really.

@Tyfosken But having a martial skill would make you about a billion times cooler than just yet another thug with a gun. And guns are far too destructive, a lot of the time anyone who'd even need to be taught a lesson just needs a good reality check fist-to-the-face rather than a GUNSHOT WOUND that could ruin their life. Overall, I think just knowing a martial art and keeping yourself in good enough shape that you just LOOK like someone who isn't to be messed with is the best approach.

@Tyfosken Back when either skill would actually be used for protection the more suitable discipline would rely entirely on your enemy, a large weapon like a broadsword or flamberge would utterly annihilate a rapier, perhaps even breaking it in two. Meanwhile, kendo is essentially decorative, because it was rare for a fight between katana users to last more than a single killing blow (therefore making iaido more useful in actual combat).

@Tyfosken sword fighting techniques are pretty similar to hand to hand combat , its same mentality only bit different moves , and moves aint that hard to learn its speed/mentality/strenght what matters anyway which you learn in any martial art

@risenjudas I'm a grad student and a member of my university Kendo club, and we love this show because in some way we feel like we can relate to what they're doing. I've told my buddies that we should show episodes on club anime nights as a "recruiting tool." =P
